The Ice Dragon by George R.R. Martin

This is a good story for young readers about the sacrifice for the loving one. In the tale, the girl had an ice-dragon who will do anything for the girl to keep her safe. Just as the girl will risk anything to protect her family. Besides, Each illustration in the book was so beautiful. And the art convened Martin's every word amazingly. First, I have had this little book FOREVER. I got it from BookOutlet and it has a little tear in the dust jacket and until I picked it up and read it, I had no idea there was an awesome poster on the other side of the dust jacket. I will show y'all after I get it laminated, tear be damned!! Here's what it looks like though!! I freaking love it!!

Of all of George R.R Martin’s short stories this one is by far my favourite. It may be because it is the only one with dragons in it or it may be because it is an early prelude to A Song of Ice and Fire. The publishers have hinted that this is set in Westeros. It’s not. There is no mention of an actual setting, but what is does show is an early application of an idea that he eventually used in his wonderful fantasy series: it shows us dragons that are ridden into combat at the service of Kings.

This story left me feeling pretty haunted, so please keep that in mind and maybe read the book yourself first, before giving this to your child. I do think this story packs a pretty big punch with a pretty impactful message, even though I think the message could be misconstrued.
For me, the message, or symbolism, was it is okay to be cold and alone, but sometimes it is worth it to take a risk to feel someone else's warmth, especially the love of your family. It's completely fine to deal with you ...more

I nice child friendly story, with great illustrations. I am a not the target audience for this book, but it a great book to introduce young readers to the word of fantasy and dragons without the gore factor.

If this short story wouldn’t have been written by George R.R. Martin, I wouldn’t have read it. Or, if I would have, I wouldn’t have liked it – for the simple reason that it’s basically a children’s tale and I’m not part of that age group anymore. But the story is set in Westeros. And there are dragons. If you crave any kind of information about this world, I guess you’ll be satisfied.

This was a gorgeous little book. Luis Royo is my favorite artist, so I knew I had to get my hands on this collaboration sooner than later. And it’s about a dragon. Sold. The story itself was good. A little darker than the typical “girl and her dragon” tale, which I liked. It was perhaps just a bit too dark for kids (but would be just fine for teens). The illustrations completely enhanced the text and I’m sure that alone raised my rating by at least a star. Overall, I’m thrilled to add this gem t

I always have high expectations when reading George R.R. Martin. He really did it to himself, have you read A Game of Thrones? So going into The Ice Dragon, GRRM's children's tale, I still had nothing but the highest and happiest of attitudes until I was completely disappointed...in nothing at all. :D

Another short story that I didn't enjoy that much. Nothing new, it's probably all on me again.
This middle grade novel tells a story about Adara and her struggles, or at least, the struggles of people around her. Every winter, the ice dragon comes to the place she lives in. Lucky for her, winter is the time of her birthday. She looks forward to every visit that the ice dragon does, but everyone around her hates the dragon. It brings harsh winter effects and hinders the crops to grow. In actuality ...more

I already knew that Mr. Martin could write damn well. Not always in the most accurate way and often lacking closeness to the characters, but still engaging and allowing the reader to delve deeper into the fantasy worlds he builds so excellently. He is world-renowned because of A Game of Thrones and its sequels, but also widely criticized because of the huge amount of time it requires him to finish his next book. Yes, I understand the frustration readers have with his slow working pace. But I sti

Beautiful illustrations, but this lacked a lot of substance for me. A girl made of winter, an ice dragon and a looming enemy seem to form a great base for an interesting story, but we just don't see enough of these characters to understand them or gain a connection to them. Also, even though it's set in the 'world of games of thrones' there's no real context. It's clearly set in a time when dragons are common features of battle, but I have no concept of time or place (although I'm sure it's allu

I was shocked to see that most reviews on here of The Ice Dragon sing its praises. It makes me wonder if anyone actually comprehended the story at all. I wouldn't even give it one star on here, but of course, zero stars isn't an option.

“The ice dragon breathed cold…Warmth fled. Fires guttered and went out, shriven by the chill…Animals turned blue and whimpered and died, their eyes bulging and their skin covered over with frost. The ice dragon breathed death into the world; death and quiet and cold.”
Ah, yes, what a lovely book for children! Full of animals’ eyes bulging out of their heads, and throngs of men returning from war with no legs or arms, or blinded by evil fire dragons. The perfect bedtime story!

Pretty good, but not quite as entertaining and magical as I thought it'd be.
Was quite a cliched fantasy story, with Adara (the main character) being different from everyone else and an outsider in her family (as she was born in the long winter and thus loved winter and the cold, and was reserved and stoic) whilst the rest of her family were born in summer and were warm and loving in comparison. Anyway, Adara befriended an ice dragon who saved her and her family from war/fire ...more

Anyone who knows the author George R.R. Martin for his masterpiece "A Song of Ice and Fire" can hardly imagine him as a children's book writer, either because of the cruelty and sadism of some of his characters or because of the strong sexual appeal contained in its pages (accentuated in its adaptation for TV).

While the story is very enjoyable and compulsively readable, the star of this little novella is most definitely the artwork. It is just beyond stunning, I spent ages just gazing at the illustrations in awe! The story itself is quite fun and left me wanting more, I’d gladly read a full length novel with these characters. It’s definitely trademark GRRM, despite being a middle grade novella it is quite gruesome and bloody. I’m not complaining though, I’m all for gruesome and bloody!

Other than talk of a few split heads, men fried to a smoking crisp and a daughter that's maybe a little too friendly when it comes to the lads, I may consider reading this to my soon to be eight year old daughter. After all, she's just a little bit older than our main character Adara and is also quite fond of a dragon or three as well.

This a little gem of a book! It's about a child Adara who was born in the coldest winter in memory. Her mother died in childbirth, and Adara is a winter's child. This basically means she has cold skin, can hang around outside in the cold without getting hypothermia and can touch ice lizards without burning them to death. It also means she has a special connection with an ice dragon.

I didn't realize going in that The Ice Dragon was a re-release of a children's book GRRM wrote in 1980. I have no idea what the illustrations were like in the original version, but Luis Royo's art for this 2014 version is beautiful.
I will also admit that I got distracted while reading because it's been marketed as taking place in the same world as A Song of Ice and Fire (a claim I believed as Ice Dragons have been mentioned in the books). But. I don't think it does take place in the same world. ...more

The Ice Dragon, by George R.R Martin, is a short, engaging, novel. The amazing illustrations make the book all the better. The characters were well written. They were not perfect but very believable. The main character, Adara, is a small child with a big heart. She loves her family but her ice dragon more. Adara is a winter child so she can’t feel the cold. Adara’s father is a beast of a man. He is like a grizzly bear and has the muscles of Thor. Though he does have a soft spot for his family. A

Another delightful short story by Martin. I read this originally in Dreamsongs, but then my sister gifted me this illustrated edition for Christmas.
This is a story targeted at younger readesr (10-12 year olds) but enjoyable for all. Martin captures the cold ingeniously - only Jack London does it equally as well. In this rural community, the ice dragon is a feared beast, untamed and lethal. It leaves a frozen desert in its wake, yet the young girl, Adara - a child born of winter - is not fearful ...more
