Fear: Falling in Love with an Alpha Billionaire, is the debut novel of Amarie Avant. The premise of this story is an assassin, Victor, takes an assignment to kill Dr. Whitson. Before he can execute the job, he meets and becomes infatuated with Luxury, the doctor’s daughter. It turns out that the assassin happens to also be a Duke, grandson to the Queen. The story is rounded out by the fact that Luxury’s mother was murdered one year prior and Luxury was the one to find the body.
This is not a happily ever after story. Victor has been able to seduce any woman he chooses for a long time and we are to believe that Luxury is a challenge to Victor. This was my first inclination that this book had some serious issues. We are expected to view Luxury as this emotionally stunted, but strong young woman, because of her broken relationship with her boyfriend and the death of her mother. But at any point Victor gives her an instruction, or demand, she relents immediately. Secondly, I almost didn’t finish the book because it became difficult to follow the true story of the book. I’m surmising that because this is the first in the series, and we find out at the end it is a cliffhanger, the author threw so much backstory, it became hard to keep track. For example, what purpose did Deondre serve? Who exactly is Monica? While in the context of this review these questions are meaningless, I had the same feeling about their presence in the story.
I probably will not read the next book to see how this story ends.
