This was an interesting overview of the history of the New York Public Library and cast it in a positive light. The number of different libraries and collections were interesting, but since I'm not as familiar with the library itself, I found it less interesting than if I were more familiar. This book just scratched the surface of the interesting history of the New York Public Library and made an argument for it being an innovative institution and one of the best libraries in the country, ranking alongside the Library of Congress. Its main weakness, I felt, was that it was published in 2000, so a whole chapter of the library's history - how it served patrons in the great recession - was omitted. This book has beautiful pictures of the libraries and selected items in the collection and is good for people - like me - who enjoy library history.

I read this on my flight back from NYC and it was very engaging! At some points it could have gone more in depth, but as a book for the general public interested in the library, it does a great job at presenting a positive mission image.

Read at work to familiarize myself - this is a good overview of my new workplace, with special attention to the research libraries. I'm now full of trivia about the library and have a good timeline of NY library events.
