A bald-headed psychopath returns to his neighborhood and the body count rises. He's the nebulous face, the deadliest kind, of corporate espionage. An equal opportunity killer, incapable of remorse, uncaring whether his victims are family or foe. The opening sequence is startlingly dramatic as we witness the callous actions of this despicable individual. The scene is now set to unravel the full extent of this multi-layered plot.

Strong characters, hard-boiled dialogue that reminds me of 40s noir films, and an unsettling, rainy North England background. Crimes are being committed, killings even, and someone is ripping off the family firm- but who? The only one you can trust is the family rat!

I really enjoyed this book. It's packed with intrigue, but what I really enjoyed was the interplay between the characters, particularly the back and forth between Jenny and Matt. There's chemistry there, with the the dialogue managing to be both clever and natural, in a very British sort of way. And the interaction between Jenny and her younger sister is very well done, too. And the grandparents. I could hear their voices as I read, and as I mentioned earlier, it was all very English. Loved it.< ...more

The blurb on the cover says "Set in the mid 1970's India, A Fine Balance tells the story of four unlikely people whose lives come together during a time of political turmoil soon after the government declares a "State of Internal Emergency". Through days of bleakness and hope, their circumstances, and their fates, become inextricable linked in ways noone could have foreseen"

They are certainly days of bleakness, cruelty, oppression, deprivation, poverty and suffering but every page is
