As bouncer, it’s Paulie's job to protect pole dancers, break up brawls, and pat down the illegal farm workers and drug dealers who patronize Insanidád, a roadside “gentlemen’s club” on the outskirts of Modesto, California. But Paulie won’t rest until he finds out who killed his brother, Lloyd, a young pharmacist gunned down in his prime.

By day, Paulie inhabits a camper w

Recommends it for: Any one who enjoys fast paced fun books
From the start you see this book could actually be a "based on a true story" so to speak! its so greatly researched that you either feel you are with these characters while all this is happening or you seem to be there watching it all unfold!! From the characters backgrounds, to professions, to just dealings in the book you can tell she used her wits, common sense and really used her WELL USED RESEARCH to make these people in the story just that PEOPLE! i found myself rooting for Paulie and Lena ...more

Absorbing story, flawed, likable characters, and a learning about the world of a low-class strip join kept me turning pages till late at night. I really enjoyed this book--Sorrentino is a great story teller, with a strong sense of language, atmosphere, and character development, plus an absorbing plot that kept me guessing till the end. I've read a couple of other books by this author and loved them all. From the first page, I was right in the story--I love a book like this that makes me forget ...more

Stop & Frisk is such an enjoyable read. Thrilling, witty and humorous, Sheryl Sorrentino does it again. She does't just put together a colorful cast of characters, but really examines the complex relationships between people with vastly different background and experiences. She challenges our notions of "likable" and "unlikeable" characters, and in the process takes the reader on an exciting journey full of intrigue and subterfuge. Loved this book! ...more

Stop & Frisk is my first book by Sheryl Sorrentino. I enjoyed all the twists and turns of this story and it kept me guessing to the end on what would happen next. This well written book had drama, action and a hero that I sometimes wanted to slap or hug. Stop & Frisk is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

The nitty-gritty of life, death, drugs, and strip clubs. The story revolves around Paulie Beckwith.

I won a copy of this book during a Goodreads giveaway. I am under no obligation to leave a review or rating and do so voluntarily. So that others may also enjoy this book, I am paying it forward by donating it to my local library.

Full of entertaining twists, turns, and gyrations, Stop and Frisk examines what could be described as the “proto-romantic” relationships in and around a strip joint in Modesto, a colorful and intriguingly UNglamorous recess of California. Our protagonist, Paulie, is the bouncer at the aptly-named gentlemen’s club, Insanidád. The first thing that happens when you, a would-be gentleman, arrive outside the club is you are frisked by Paulie, and then – surprise! – you are grabbed and squeezed there… ...more

Sheryl Sorrentino’s book “Stop & Frisk” focuses on the drama-packed and complicated life of Paulie Beckwith, in Modesto, California. Paulie’s life is complex and full of conflict at his job as a bouncer at a local strip club, Insanidad’s House of Girls. While trying to keep the peace within the club, Paulie is also torn apart internally from his ex-girlfriend, Lena, the bartender at t

This book is a great read. The author contacted me and asked if I would be willing to review her book and I’m so glad I told her I would. The story begins with a bouncer frisking would be customers, female pole dancers and a woman behind the bar making drinks. The setting is a Gentleman’s Club. I found the main characters fascinating. The bouncer is struggling with the death of his brother and a broken love relationship with the woman behind the bar. She wanted marriage, children and a stable ho ...more

From the start, the book reminded me of one of my faves, "In the Garden of Last Days". While Dubus' book focused more on the role of the customer and the dancer, and the dancer herself, Sorrentino focused on the role of the bouncer with the customer and somewhat on the dancers. In either case, Joe Public already has an idea that these business establishments are questionable and more or less dens of iniquity. It's what puts people in these places that intrigues me. Paulie has come from a horribl ...more

Omg this book was so good, I would Love To see a Part 2. I have read all of Sheryl Sorrentino's books so I already knew that this was going to be another great book but I have to say this is my favorite!! I don't want to say too much and give the story away for other readers but I will say that I fell in love with Paulie & Lena's characters. What a bittersweet ending!! I highly recommend this book!!! ...more

I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways. I liked the way this author wrote. Easy to follow...just flowed. Loved her descriptions and felt connected to the story. I really was frustrated with Pauli, and with Lena but that is what makes a good book. I felt emotion good or bad toward the characters. I would read another book from this Author!!

This was my first book by this author. It was a good read and pretty entertaining. The story really takes some twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. Also, had me turning the pages and not wanting the book to end. A good read.

Sheryl Sorrentino is the author of six very different novels: Later With Myself: The Misadventures of Millie Moskowitz (which recounts a neglected twelve-year-old’s devastating pregnancy); An Unexpected Exile (a romantic ride with Risa Weinberg, a 29-year old Jewish fashion merchandiser who is relentlessly pursued by a charismatic and slightly "off-kilter" Sandinista rebel); The Floater ...more
