She set up her own tutoring agency which gave her the idea for her first YA novel The Territory. The Territory won the TSBA in 2018 and the Gateshead Teen Book Award and the trilogy still frequently tops the most borrowed books lists in British school libraries. She has written other Young Adult novels, including the TSBA-shortlisted We Go On Forever and co-wrote the feature film - T.I.M. – a thriller which premiered on Netflix UK in August 2023, reaching number one in their most watched films list. She lives in London with her husband and three children.

Sometimes life imitates art.
Successful crime novelist Laura is in the attic, deeply focused on the latest chapter of her novel. She reflects on her situation, moving on from an acrimonious divorce, her fresh start with fiancé Ted, whilst downstairs her beloved son Benjy plays quietly on his PlayStation or watches TV. As the sun goes down, it occurs to her that the house is quiet – too quiet. She calls for Benjy, there’s no answer and she frantically searches the house and then the garden. As she dials 999, she notices two sets of footprints by the garden gate which leads into Sheen Woods. One set is large and the other small and she comes to the shocking realisation that someone has taken her son right from under her nose. DI Stratton is placed in charge of the investigation and as the case deepens in complexity, she realises no one can be trusted – not even Laura. The story is told by Stratton and Laura.
This is another gripping read from SM Govett. It’s character driven, has multiple layers but much of the focus is on trust or the lack of it. Stratton has lost hers because of the last case and issues in her personal life, Laura‘s trust in her ex-husband is zero to none, her trust in Ted waivers and let’s say in Benjy‘s case that those he should be able to trust, perhaps he can’t.
The characterisation is very strong, it’s hard to get a handle on some characters particularly Laura who is an enigma but that’s what makes it so fascinating. I love Stratton’s inner dialogues, they feel so real and true to life. She’s very hard on herself, justifiably or not. She’s got quite the temper on her and she can be acerbic and sarcastic, but equally she’s honest and can be funny. She’s certainly never dull.
The pot is clever, there’s almost a plot within a plot by Laura and her writing and there are some excellent scenes via this. It’s not especially fast paced but that suits the themes and the unfolding drama and makes for compelling reading. The are plenty of twists and turns with a couple of revelations that make my jaw hit the floor with a resounding thud. The ending is very good with the suspense continuing right to the very end. Roll on number three.
This is a series. I can highly recommend.

This was so so good, I was absolutely captivated, I couldn’t put the book down and finished it in two sittings. This was a hard read, a difficult subject but incredibly well written with plot twists that I didn’t expect. I didn’t know who to trust throughout. It was good to be back with DI Stratton! A must read!

When You Looked Away is a dark, twisty second addition to the series that follows the perspectives of Stratton and Laura.
I continue to love Stratton as a character. She’s fierce, determined, blunt, sassy, and genuinely relatable, especially in the way she’s so hard on herself. And after that final bombshell, I can’t wait to see where the series takes her next.
Meanwhile, Laura is quite the enigma. She’s complex, slightly unreliable, fascinating, and kept me questioning everything. Between Laura and Stratton, the character-driven side of this story was executed brilliantly.
The narrative itself is fast-paced, dark, clever, tense, and heartbreaking. The descriptive prose draws you straight into the story, and the atmosphere is so immersive that it genuinely had me with my heart in my mouth. I couldn’t predict the twists, I trusted nobody, and I honestly never saw that ending coming.
I don’t want to say too much about the plot because this is a story that’s best experienced knowing as little as possible, but I can say I loved every minute of it. S.M. Govett has firmly cemented herself as a thriller author to watch out for, and I can see When You Looked Away being one of my favourite 2026 reads!

This is the second book I’ve read from Sarah Govett and after loving Believe this was a definite go to book for me. I wasn’t disappointed. When You Looked Away is another captivating thrill ride with so many possibilities and slick turns. Misdirection and secrets covered every page as we’re led to believe first one thing then another. Tense scenes share the dread of losing a child with the whole force swept up in the need to find answers. Another investigation for D I Stratton means we get to see more of her character as well and how she deals with the cross over between her professional and personal life. The alternate chapters between Laura and Stratton again make this flow really well and I kept turning the page to devour more of the story.

S.M. Govett delivers a great sequel in the DI Stratton series. I do love the character of Helen Stratton, everything you want from a female detective lead.
Laura, a successful writer and her son Benjy have recently moved in with her fiancé. All is well until Benjiy goes missing....
Another good paced, clever thriller with plenty of suspense that builds throughout the book and delivers an ending with a twist.
I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I’d seen this book all over instagram about how good it is and how it’s a must read so when it became available on NetGalley I just had to request it to see what all the hype was about and boy was that the best decision! I was hooked from the first chapter! It was thrilling, suspenseful and got you properly thinking of the story and the characters. I didn’t have a jar of glue who had done it or why? When it was revealed at the end I was dumbfounded. Never in my life would I have guessed who it was! What a fabulous story and writing style! It was bloody fantastic. It was detailed, fantastically written and I loved each character apart from Ted, and if you read this book you’ll know why I didn’t particularly like Ted. This was definitely worth the hype and I loved every single word, page and chapter of this book. Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to review this book🥰♥️

It was so good to be back with DI Stratton! After loving Believe so much I had really high hopes for When You Looked Away. I can now firmly say that I am in safe hands with Sarah Govett’s writing. The dialogue is believable, pacy and emotionally engaging. All of her books would work really well as a television series and I really hope this happens one day.
This book covers some very difficult subjects and it is not an easy read. I was left devastated at more than one point. I adored that Laura the FMC was a crime novelist & loved getting to read extracts from her writing throughout.
Sarah Govett has once again managed to perfectly build suspense through shifting perspectives. You will constantly be theorising & questioning each character’s reliability. The chapters are short which helps to build momentum & you’ll always be saying ‘oh just one more…’
A solid 5 star read for me…. now bring on DI Stratton book 3!!

When You Looked Away by S. M. Govett is the latest Detective Inspector Stratton thriller which was given to me as an advanced copy by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for this honest and impartial review.
Stratton is the archetypal, forthright detective, fighting her own inner demons as a female detective within a misogynistic Police Force. Having joined the Police after her teenage sister went missing years earlier where she and her mother both felt the Police could have done more for them in their hour of need, she is continuously battling to do all she can for every victim she comes into contact with.
The story starts with Laura, who is a bestselling novelist whose crime novels are the result of her immersing herself entirely in her stories at the expense of all other aspects of her life, including her role as mother of her 11-year-old son, Benjy.
After awakening from her dedicative workstate one evening she realises that the house is silent, there’s been no sign or sound of Benjy for hours and she cannot find him in her home. As the front door is still latched, she searches for signs of Benjy in the rear garden of her home, which borders the local woodland. She finds the lock on the back gate has been removed and the usually squeaky latch itself has been cleaned and oiled. All of which is particularly strange, but it is only when Laura notices two sets of footprints in the muddy ground, leading away from her garden; one large, adult size set together with a smaller set, presumably belonging to Benjy, that she begins to believe something could be horribly wrong.
Once Stratton is assigned the case, it quickly becomes more than a missing persons investigation. Between the remarkably emotionally distant mother, her blustering and arrogant ex-husband and Laura’s new fiancé who seems to have a secretive past of his own, unravelling what has happened to Benjy is not an easy task, and she is thwarted by misdirection and false leads throughout. This is compounded further when an illicit relationship of Stratton herself re-ignites, just whilst her own mother is seriously ill, and the pressure builds unbearably upon Stratton. Will she solve the case, or will she reach her boiling point beforehand?
When reading this review, you’ll be forgiven for feeling that there are a handful of cliches included in the storyline, and to be honest I’d agree that this is well founded. However, what separates this story from a run of the mill pulp thriller is the emotional depth designated to the mother’s untenable situation. The unthinkable plight of a mother who has lost her sibling is sensitively dealt with but also with a level of detail which adds to the feeling of vulnerability for the reader. This also helps deliver some additional and welcome plot twists which are generated from the emotional and passionate distress of a mother who will do everything in her power to find out what has happened to her son.
I felt that the first instalment of the DI Stratton series; Believe, suffered from a couple of implausible plot twists and character reactions, which are not the case this time around. The ending is poignantly distressing but still plausible, nicely wrapping up the loose ends credibly.
I felt Believe was a strong 3.5 star read, rounded up to 4 stars for a debut author. When You Looked Away firmly earns a ⭐⭐⭐⭐ on its own merit. S. M. Govett is an author to follow!

Ooooh, this is good! I really enjoyed Govett’s last book ‘Believe’ so I was very keen to get my hands on a copy of this new one, and it did not disappoint.
Laura is divorced from her ex-husband Rich and now lives with her new fiancé Ted and her son Benjy. She is a writer and loves to write detective fiction books. Her new story is unsettling her as she keeps writing Benjy into the plot in the guise of the victim of her story. After picking Benjy up from school she has retired to the loft to continue writing her story while Benjy entertains himself downstairs – at 11, he can be trusted.
However, as darkness falls Laura realises that Benjy hasn’t asked for dinner so she goes in search of him…but the house is empty. Taking to the garden, she is alarmed to find the rusty gate sparkly clean and two sets of footprints leading into the forest, one clearly Benjy’s and the other unmistakably an adults.
Meanwhile, at the police station, DI Stratton is struggling with her dementia-stricken mother who is living in a care home. As a detective she doesn’t have a lot of time to visit her, and she feels the disapproval of the care home staff. Now her mum has pneumonia, and the hospital are chasing Stratton for a DNR order… Throw into this a complicated love life and now a missing child and every suspect having a cast iron alibi…
This is such a hard book to review without packing it full of spoilers! There are so many twists and turns as the story unfolds – people not who they seem, people with ulterior motives and a writer with a story to tell. The writing is sensational as you follow one trail of breadcrumbs to one conclusion only to have your hopes dashed as another piece of evidence points straight to someone else. Govett really knows how to keep a reader guessing! The reveal is as good as the reveal in the last book and I love that Stratton has put in another appearance.
Again, think ‘Gone Girl’ and Jo Nesbo books and you are not too far adrift of what this is. Govett is fast becoming a favourite author!!

Sarah’s writing style in Believe last year had me utterly engrossed from the very beginning and I am pleased to report that this one did exactly the same!
This is a title that will keep you guessing throughout, some cleverly plotted reveals taking you in a completely different direction to what is expected, and then wow, what am astoundingly clever ending - this is a tense thriller that keeps the reader on tenterhooks, leading them into a false sense of security throughout.
The phrase ‘just one more chapter’ definitely rings true with this book as the alternating POV’s encompass the reader onto the journey to solve the case. With the police and Laura both insistent on finding the killer, the clues are slotted in to the descriptive prose perfectly, I honestly felt I was in the room with Laura, driving in the car with Stratton, taking everything on board as if I was seeing the events unfold in reality.
I also enjoyed the development of Stratton’s character, elements from the first book carrying over, including her mother’s failing health and the decisions she has to make, alongside the relationship entanglement with Parker. No spoilers but I was flabbergasted at the end of this book with certain actions and I certainly can’t wait to see how Stratton reacts to this in the next book! I think it is safe to say it will definitely be with attitude!

I enjoy debut books but it’s rare they make the author a must read straight away, however that is what happened with this author’s previous book ‘Believe’ and I have been waiting impatiently for her next one ever since - so I was excited to finally be able to read! This has definitely solidified the author as a top one and was another very well written, gripping read. The author did a great job at slowly building the story and building creeping dread and suspense. Even though it felt a bit repetitive at first, by the half way point I was glued to the story and all the twists and turns left me breathless. I was constantly doubting myself at who to trust.
The author also did a good job at character development. We see the return of D.I. Stratton and team, who continued with her trademark sarcasm but managed to feel authentic, while a little flawed. Some characters were highly unlikeable, however they were still compelling. There were some tough moments within the story, which were emotionally charged, bringing on a rollercoaster of emotions, but the author managed to do this is a way that added depth to the story and helped bring it forward. This was another excellent read in this series overall and a multi layered, clever mystery. I am hoping there will be more to come. 4.5 stars rounded up. Absolutely brilliant second book in the DI Stratton series.
Laura comes downstairs after writing to find her eleven year old son has vanished. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare. From that point on, the tension just doesn’t give up. The pacing is excellent and the twists are brilliant and properly shocked me.
I thought this was so cleverly plotted. There are several believable suspects, and at different points I was convinced each one could be guilty. Everyone seems to be hiding something, and I had no idea who to trust. You experience that uncertainty alongside DI Stratton, who finds herself questioning Benji’s family and even her own instincts as the investigation continues without a solid suspect.
Laura was a really interesting character alongside DI Stratton. As a mother, you desperately want to trust her, but I found myself questioning her more than once. The snippets from the crime novel she’s writing, together with the secrets from her past, kept me constantly second guessing her.
I also loved spending more time with DI Stratton. Seeing more of her personal life, particularly her relationship with her ailing mother and with Parker/Mark, adds a bit of vulnerability to her character. She’s messy, sassy, blunt and sarcastic, but she’s also fiercely determined. I absolutely love her.
Tense, clever and packed with twists, this had me hooked from start to finish. That final bombshell has left me desperate to find out what happens next for DI Stratton.
When You Looked Away is out today, and I’d definitely recommend picking it up!! Believe was one of my top reads in 2025 and this is definitely one of my top reads in 2026 so far.

The second book featuring DI Helen Stratton, ‘Believe’ was one of my top reads of last year so I was really looking forward to this. Told from dual perspective; those of Laura Forrester a successful crime writer and the main protagonist, and Helen herself. This is a dark and disturbing story about the death of Laura‘s son Benjy who disappears whilst Laura is upstairs writing her latest novel. I don’t have children but this must be a mother’s worst nightmare and despite her demeanour Laura’s self-guilt is evident.
Briefly, distraught when she finds Benjy missing Helen goes searching for her son and finds him face down in a stream. Laura has been through an acrimonious divorce and her former husband Rich Denton blames her for Benjy’s death. However, her current partner, school teacher Ted Green, is kind and supportive. Her home becomes a crime scene and she and Ted have to move in with neighbours.
Helen is a flawed character and difficult to like, I found her manner often abrupt but her tough exterior does hide a softer side. Her personal life is a bit of a car crash. Her affair with her boss ended although they still work together reasonably well, her mother is in a care home living with dementia and it’s difficult for Helen to visit us often as she should and she is wondering whether to apply for a promotion. Laura comes across as very cold and unemotional and her reactions after finding her son put her at the top of Helen’s suspect list. This is a very good police procedural/ crime thriller that had me self guessing myself more than once. Fast paced and well executed this is a fantastic read.

This second book of the DI Stratton series, is a really gritty, hard-hitting police procedural which I thoroughly enjoyed reading.
The narrative is told over the course of five days, as DI Stratton heads up the investigation after a young boy goes missing. After what happened in ‘Believe’ - the first book of the series - I thought it was a more cynical Stratton we saw in this one. She’s keen to find a perpetrator but her decisions are more rash, and she almost seems to be clutching at straws at times.
The story is told from two POVs - Stratton and the boy’s mother, Laura, who is a crime writer. The chapters are mainly short, which helps propel the story forward, but it does have a slower pace to it as it delves deeply into both Laura’s and Stratton’s thoughts, which I do love in books like this where you’re trying to work out just what is going on.
This book touches on some very sensitive issues which do include the murder of a young child, and a few parts were quite harrowing to read - although not as graphic as they could have been. It’s a book which messes with Stratton’s mind, and it’s a book which messed with my mind too.
Everyone seems to be hiding secrets; everyone looks guilty at some point; and Laura was such an unreliable narrator that one moment I would think it was her while the next I thought there was no way it could be.
It’s a very well-written and expertly crafted storyline which will keep you guessing until the very end. Thanks to Sarah for another brilliant DI Stratton book, and I’m just hoping there’s another on the way.

Laura is a practical yet somewhat distant mother. When her eleven-year-old son, Benjy, suddenly disappears from their home while Laura is alone writing in the attic, and a set of adult footprints are discovered leading away from the scene, a tragic and shocking chain of events begins to unfold.
The novel is immersive and compelling throughout. Laura is an engaging and sympathetic character, yet there is also something evasive about her that creates a persistent sense of unease, as though important details are being deliberately withheld. Every character feels unpredictable and faintly suspicious, which adds to the atmosphere of tension running through the novel. The twists continue right through to the final chapters, constantly shifting the reader’s perspective and making the eventual reveal both shocking and emotionally affecting.
This is also the second novel in the series and DI Stratton is a fantastic character. She is compelling, resilient and capable, while still feeling deeply human. The glimpses into her personal life add a sense of realism and highlight the wider pressures and emotional strain that come with her role. That Monday could have been like any other day. When You Look Away hits the ground running with the tragic discovery that Laura Forrester’s eleven year old son Benjy is missing from home and with no signs of any disturbance in the house, the front door still locked, Laura heads out into the garden where she discovers two sets of footprints leading into the woods and with it comes the realisation that Benjy has left the house with someone. What then follows is a complex investigation and as DI Helen Stratton and her team of detectives start to unpick the less than obvious clues, so a twisty domestic drama starts to unfold.
What I enjoy about these crime novels is the believability of the characters especially DI Stratton who is both prickly and feisty in equal measure, she can be sharp and snarky and yet seems to get the job done without ruffling too many feathers. Intricately written, there’s a few clever twists I didn’t see coming and even though I thought I had the perpetrator sussed, there were so many red herrings that I was never quite convinced my theories were correct. The ending, when it comes, is entirely convincing and I’m pleased to discover that the story points in the direction of another DI Stratton story, hopefully, sometime soon.
There’s nothing better than settling down on a summer’s afternoon to read the latest crime thriller from this talented writer. To be back in the company of DI Helen Stratton in this second book in the series is a real delight.

I was really looking forward to reading this as I read the authors debut novel ‘Believe’ which I thought was amazing.
Laura is a crime writer and writes detective novels. She is divorced and has one son Benjy who is eleven years old. She now lives with her fiancé Ted. She is up in the attic, immersing herself in her work while Benjy is downstairs entertaining himself. When he is hungry has usually come to her to say his hungry. But today all is silent and she wonders what’s up. So, she goes downstairs to see Benjy gone.
She first searches around the home and he is not there. But when she goes searching it in the garden, she finds footprints that lead to the nearby wood. When she follows them. She finds him dead in the wood and nearby they find discarded Wellies hidden. Who would want to kill Benjy and why.
To be honest, I felt a bit confused at first what was going on in this story. As I read on it started to come clear. This is a gripping multi layered story finding out what happened to Benjy and his demise. I didn’t really like Laura I thought she was a bit self-cantered, and I thought she didn’t care enough about her son dying. Although I thought this was gripping, I felt the writing style was a bit rushed in places and could have a slowed a notch. It is still and entertaining read. 4 stars from me.

Every time I thought I had worked things out, another twist completely changed my perspective. The final reveal genuinely blew me away.
This is also a deeply emotional novel. Achingly heartbreaking and incredibly sad in places, there were moments that were genuinely difficult to read because of the raw emotion woven throughout the story. This is one of those rare books that lingers in your mind long after you've closed the cover.
Although this is the second instalment in the DI Helen Stratton series, I read it without having read the first book and never felt at a disadvantage. Helen Stratton is a wonderfully written protagonist—flawed, sarcastic and constantly placing enormous pressure on herself, yet utterly relatable. Her inner monologues are superb, adding both depth and humanity to her character while balancing the tension of the investigation perfectly.
I'll most definitely be going back to read Believe, the first book in the series, and I'm already looking forward to seeing where Helen's journey takes her in book three. If you enjoy crime fiction with intricate plotting, compelling characters and an ending you won't see coming, I highly recommend When You Looked Away.

I was absolutely thrilled to see that we were getting a second book in the DI Stratton series! I completely loved book one, Believe Me Now, so getting to reunite with this wonderful cast of characters was a massive treat. However, if you haven't read the first one, don't let that stop you. This works perfectly as a standalone thriller too.
Govett taps into a chilling, primal fear with this book. Laura is upstairs writing, only to realize the house is far too quiet and her son, Benjy, has been taken right out of their garden. The story hooks you immediately. From the chilling discovery of adult footprints next to Benjy’s, to the realization that Laura's own novel mirrors the crime, the tension never lets up.
I thoroughly enjoyed following DI Stratton as she navigates a gritty case where absolutely everyone is a suspect, even the grieving mother. The story balances the procedural elements with genuine, raw emotion. You feel the panic and the desperation bleeding through the pages.
Overall this is an intense and brilliantly plotted psychological thriller that hits all the right notes. Govett is a master storyteller, and this is exactly the kind of twisty, emotional read that keeps you guessing until the very end. I can't wait to see where the next installment will take us.

From the very first page I was completely pulled me.The premise alone is every parent’s worst nightmare and the tension builds so quickly that I found myself flying through the pages, needing to know what had happened and staying up far later than I should have! The pacing was spot on intense, emotional, and full of that creeping unease that keeps you hooked and on edge.
Laura is such a compelling character and the way the story explores fear, guilt, and suspicion is incredibly well done. Everyone feels like a potential suspect and just when you think you’ve worked it out the story shifts again. I was constantly second guessing myself, which is exactly what I want from a thriller like this.
What really stood out for me was the emotional depth alongside the suspense. This isn’t just a fast paced thriller , it hits hard, especially towards the end. That ending was genuinely heartbreaking and stayed with me long after I finished.

In short, Govett played me like a fiddle with twists and turns, second guesses, and doubt. Her engaging style and ability to develop every character is to be commended.
