Going into my first Unholy Publishing novel, I expected a story built almost entirely around taboo spice and extreme dark romance. Judging by the publisher's branding, I was prepared for a five-chili read.
Surprisingly, that wasn't the case at all.
It quickly became clear that, despite the dark premise, the relationship between Kadia and the four Warminds is built on mutual attraction and consent rather than shock value. Once I adjusted my expectations, I genuinely enjoyed the story for what it is instead of what I had anticipated.
The biggest highlight for me was Kadia herself. As both a reader and a psychologist, I appreciated that she isn't simply holding her own against the men. More often than not, she is one step ahead of them. It was refreshing to read a Dark Romance heroine whose strength comes from her intelligence and confidence rather than her ability to endure.
The further the story progressed, the more emotional depth the characters gained. Combined with the fluid writing style, it made the pages fly by, and the cliffhanger definitely convinced me to continue with book two.
The reason this is a four-star rather than a five-star read comes down to plausibility. A few plot points stretched my suspension of disbelief a little too far. The world's greatest hackers overlooking details that seem rather obvious, Kadia managing to smuggle a bag full of weapons unnoticed, or several moments where coded communication should have raised suspicion but didn't, occasionally pulled me out of the story.
That said, these issues never outweighed the overall reading experience. Shattered Control is an entertaining Dark Romance with an intelligent, badass heroine, engaging characters, and a writing style that makes it incredibly easy to keep reading.
I'm looking forward to seeing where book two takes the Warminds and Kadia.

Düster. Fesselnd. Explosiv.
Shattered Control war für mich ein absoluter Pageturner. Spannende Atmosphäre, emotionale Tiefe und Charaktere, die im Kopf bleiben. Ein Buch, das man in einem Rutsch verschlingen möchte!
