Next up in the Dan Mahoney mystery series is HAIR OF THE DOG. Poor private investigator Dan, he's had some rough and dangerous experiences lately! But the upshot is good--he s engaged, and now he'd like some vacation time. Too bad: what he gets is a "working vacation" in Florida, Daytona Beach, to be exact. Dan is tasked with investigating an arson at a greyhound racing track, which killed five greyhounds, sadly, plus a murder there that occurred the same n

Susan Slater in her new book, “Hair Of The Dog” Book Four in the Dan Mahoney Mystery series published by Poisoned Pen Press gives us another adventure with Dan Mahoney.

This was ok. A complicated mystery with tons of characters, each involved somehow in the untangled reveal. Don't expect any great twist, though, or a surprise ending. You will love the good-guys and despise the bad-guys from the moment you meet them. Also, don't get the idea that this is in any way a dog-book - no dog proves to be heroic or even of invaluably helpful. On top of that, the sympathy of these "dog lovers" just doesn't shine through - at one point the bereaved kennel owner sheds some ...more

Inane drivel.

Two stars. One and a half of those are for the dogs.

Gets four stars average on Goodreads. I assume if you go past chapter two the dogs get more story time.

Hair of the Dog by Susan Slater is a cozy mystery that is not quite so cozy. If you are a dog lover, this one is for you. It has a cast of characters that will have you sifting through the evidence in search of the guilty party. Susan did not make it easy for me to find the answers I was looking for, but she did make the journey enjoyable.

Fucher Crumm most always has his faithful dog, Sadie, at his side, until now. She has been missing since the murder of one of Daytona's biggest kennel owners a
I would like to thank NetGalley and Poisoned Press Ink for the opportunity of providing me with a copy to read for my honest review.

I've not read any of the Dan Mahoney mysteries and it's my lose. Dan's sense of justice is another one of the reasons I loved this book. I really loved the way the book flowed with a lots of humor and plus a couple of other plot lines going on. One involved Dan's finance and his mother which was quite funny.

Dan is an investigator for an Insurance company that is sen

Hair of the Dog is the third novel in the Dan Mahoney series by author Susan Slater. Dan is an investigator for the insurance company United Life and Casualty. This time around he's sent to Florida, where five racing greyhounds, all heavily insured, were lost in a fire - not to mention an employee was found dead in a pool of blood with the word "thief" carved on his forehead, too. While everything initially seems to be nothing but dead ends for Dan, over time pieces of the puzzle come to light.

Sometimes, the best part of reading is in re-discovering an old "friend" and that was certainly the case for me with Hair of the Dog. I first encountered author Susan Slater and her protagonist, Dan Mahoney, almost 13 years ago with Flash Flood and liked it very much but then it seemed Ms. Slater sort of vanished (and, in fact, she sort of did for a long time). I had found her other series featuring Ben Pecos but it was Dan Mahoney I really wanted to see again.

In 2014, his second adventure showe

Things really heat up when Dan Mahoney and his PI in training fiancée arrive in Florida to investigate the deaths of five valuable racing greyhounds. Of course all is not what in seems with the fire that killed the dogs, a murder, and a gentle caretaker arrested. As Dan and Eileen settle into temporary life near the beach, Simon their Rottie joins them, and Dan’s mother adopts a greyhound and prepares to buy a house with her new boyfriend.

The greyhound adoption issues are handled well with a lot

Dan Mahoney, an insurance company investigator was sent from his home in Arizona to investigate a claim in Daytona Beach, Florida. So he brought along his fiancé and decided to enjoy a vacation while investigating. There had been a fire at the Daytona Dog Track and 5 heavily insured greyhound racing dogs were missing. The owner claimed to have their cremated remains in urns on her desk. However once Dan started investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire, he began to doubt that the dogs ...more

This is the third in a series of Dan Mahoney mysteries. A bit slow at the start, but it quickly picked up and then became a great story about greyhounds, money laundering, murder mysteries (of course), and relationships. I enjoyed the growing relationship of Dan and Elaine and Dan's mother. And the twists and turns and complications were compelling.
