Thirteen-year-old Caroline is a freak. Her parents have uprooted her to a town full of Supernaturals. You'd think she'd be thrilled. But, with someone without a magical bone in her body, this daughter of tree sprites feels like even more of an outcast than she has ever before.

To make matters worse, her new home is cursed. But when Caroline takes to investigating the myste

Caroline Bennings is no ordinary girl, well. . . she is, but in her magical family, in her magical town, that’s not always a good thing. With dryads for parents and vampires for best friends, being ordinary is a problem, especially when you are the only one in the whole town who doesn’t possess any magic or supernatural power.

But lucky for the town, Caroline is ordinary, because with her lack of a magical sense and fondness of solving puzzles, she is able to figure out an age-old mystery that ha

Wow! This book! I totally devoured it!

That it ended so quick actually saddens me. I really enjoyed the world and the characters. It was light hearted and really fun.

Super Freak is about Caroline. She is the normal daughter of two Dryad parents. And I mean normal. She has absolutely no magic in her at all. This is extremely rare as almost everyone has some sort of magic inside of them to some degree. It has been that way ever since 1978 when Pandora's Box was found. It turned out that Pandora's B

4.5 star book! This book was a fun ride. The plot was engaging, and I really enjoyed all of the different supernatural characters, and the way the world was built! The writing was clear and age appropriate as well. The writing doesn't go through and explain what things mean like some middle grade books, and I appreciated that for sure! I'm definitely going to be exploring more Vanessa Barger books in future!

I really liked this book. The characters were my favorite part (Caroline is too awesome literally from line one), but the plot and writing were pretty good too. The mystery intrigued me throughout the story, but by the end, I felt like there were still a few plotlines that could've been wrapped up a bit tighter. Still, I did enjoy the book, even more than some YAs I've read recently, and I'm interested to see if there'll be a sequel.
If you'd like to read more of my thoughts on this book, you can

Someone mentioned this being a mash up of Nancy Drew meets the Munsters--and it is! Tight pacing, fresh concept, and it's suspenseful. The characters are realistic, and I just wanted to jump into this book and join the adventure with Caroline and her friends. Had me guessing the whole way through. A clever, fun-filled MG mystery that takes place in a land where everyone has supernatural powers. Everyone except 12 year old Caroline, who has to figure out the mystery of the old house they've moved ...more

I won Super Freak from a blog that I follow. All opinions are my own. Super Freak by Vanessa Barger is a story about Caroline, a thirteen year old girl who moves to a new house which seems to be haunted. While searching the house for what might be haunting it, Caroline stumbles upon a mystery that could destroy the town she calls home. I loved the writing style of Vanessa. This story pulled me in from the beginning and kept me intrigued until the end. This is definitely a must read for lovers of ...more

This book had my 7 year old engaged and exhilarated. She was eager to get from chapter to chapter and learn the truth of a huge mystery surrounding Harridan house... I would recommend this book to any person interested in mysteries with a twist of fantasy. Ever feel like an outcast...ever feel like everyone is staring at and judging you? This character is a wonderful example of how to overcome these feelings and fight back against bullying. Great message.

Such a fun premise and a great cast of characters! I really felt for Caroline when people dismissed her as a freak and "just a kid" ... kept me turning the page as I rooted for her and her new friends. Loved solving the puzzle of the house along with her and especially that "oh, of course!" moment that I remember having so many times as a kid reading my favorite mysteries.

Utterly charming! This was like Nancy Drew meets the Munsters. I'm not generally a huge MG fan, but this had enough sources of conflict and tight enough pacing to keep me entertained, without making me roll my eyes. I told my boyfriend, who adores MG, to read it, and he devoured it in a day! Great Halloween read for those who like magic and mystery, without much in the way of grotesques.
