The Sons of Brabant is the first novel in the Devil’s Bible Series by Michael Bolan (it’s also FREE on Amazon at the time of writing). After the Duke of Brabant dies, his family falls apart. The eldest son, Reinald, inherits the Duchy after manipulating the Duke on his death bed. The younger sons, Willem and Leo, and their sister, Isabella, leave the Duchy in a rage. They establish a mercenary band and vow to one day return to Brabant and liberate the people from Reinald’s tyrannical rule. Meanw ...more

In the Sons of Brabant, Michael Bolan did an admirable job blending fantasy elements, political history, Irish mythology, and Christian biblical beliefs regarding the Rapture into one epic adventure. The result is a complex narrative and highly original story.

To accommodate the sweeping scope of the novel, Bolan chose to go with an omniscient point of view, and it seemed the only practical way to move the story forward through history, the multiple political perspectives, and backstory that unde

“Death brings out the ugliness and ugliest in people.”

Michael Bolan’s “The Sons of Brabant” displays this sentiment as the lives of three brothers are altered after the demise of their father in this 1600’s medieval Book I of the Devil’s Bible Series.

Reinald, Willem, and Leopold (Leo for short) are brothers—oldest to youngest in the listed order—and sons of the departed Duke Henry of Brabant. Duke Henry was hunting with his sons when a wild boar gored him. The prognosis was good, until Fate deal

Alright, I MUST start by saying that it’s been a while since I’ve thoroughly enjoyed a book. Suffice it to say that—in the interest of wordplay and pun fun—my book famine was satiated with this story. Just a very enjoyable and wonderfully written book. However, before I get into that, I will speak a bit on the premise.

We are first introduced to four siblings whom have just lost their father who passed away in a very suspicious way. At first, healing from a battle wound, he suddenly falls back il

The Sons of Brabant tracks the lives of four siblings, Willem, Leo, Isabella and Reinald- children of the Duke of Brabant. When the duke dies, the succession is less than clear-cut and the duchy ends up in Reinald’s hands. His three siblings exile themselves, and over time head up a highly competent band of mercenaries, called the Sons of Brabant, active in the later battles of the Thirty Years War.

In the meantime, Reinald pursues a surprisingly sinister course of action, becoming involved with

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

In a war-ridden Europe, Willem, Leo, and Isabella exile themselves from their tyrannical brother, Reinald. They rely on each other and their growing group of mercenaries in their goal to depose Reinald, who has become part of a movement to bring about the Apocalypse. With the help of an Irishman, the siblings find that they must aim higher than their rightful inheritance. They must put an end to the work of the Four Horsemen for the

This book was quite exciting and the plot pulled me in from the moment that I first started reading the book. I loved the setting and found it to be so interesting. The author did a wonderful job in describing the scenes and made them very vivid. I was able to almost picture them in my mind. I also liked the plot in this book. It had a little bit of everything including adventure, romance, war, battles, murder and politics. If you like being on the edge of your seat while reading a book, this on ...more

Fact and Fiction Jumbled Together

I just bought book two in the series. Time will tell if I go on to buy book three. Blood and gore is not my usual thing, but the idea of a group of religious fanatics led by a psychotic ex Monk seeking to bring the Rapture by destroying all human progress was too interesting to miss. I wonder if the author envisioned this as an allegory for our times. In a way it could be.

The Sons of Brabant by Michael Bolan is a well-crafted and interesting¬ mixture of historical fiction and fantasy. The book’s events are firmly rooted in the real-world setting of 17th Century Europe.

Woven into this background is a story about a mercenary war band led by a trio of siblings intent on getting revenge on their evil brother who has cheated them out of their royal inheritance. The overarching sense of realism is disturbed by as mattering of fantasy, and the lightness of touch that B
