DESIGNS AND TECHNIQUES FOR ORNAMENTAL FONTS AND FLOURISHES THAT CREATE EXQUISITE HAND-LETTERED WORKS OF ART
Learn the art of hand-lettering. This step-by-step workbook teaches you how to craft pretty letters and flowers of all sorts. Use your newfound botanical lettering skills to make cards, wedding invitations, banners, tags, paper bouquets and other fun projects.
As eye candy and inspiration this book is a five. There are a lot of designs that feel easy enough for beginners yet fancy enough to be admired.
So why 3/5 stars and not higher? I think I expected more detailed instructions and tips. There's little in the way of advice on how to make letters beyond "practice". No real hints on how to layout letters with floral motifs.
So, while it's a pretty book that I'll definitely use for inspiration, I'd probably have gone for a different book had I been shopping in person instead of online.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I am not good at drawing; usually I can draw stick figures at best. This book was helpful in providing visual drawing prompts, and I drew some fairly decent flowers. I did less well at the typography section, although with some practice I think I could improve. My son is a Graphic Design student, and he likes the book as a source of inspiration for graphic design projects. I also showed it to a friend who does Zentangles, and she liked it, too. So this book appeals to a wide audience. The designs in the book, as the subtitle indicates, are whimsical and decorative. The book contains many blank pages upon which the drawer may practice, but I used a separate notebook.
Great little book for those who journal and want to learn more about hand lettering. Several styles to practice; there is also A LOT of line drawings/doodles to decorate your journal, cards, invitations.
I enjoyed this book, which had a lot of ideas to help the reader mix their own lettering with floral accents. It is a workbook with white space to practice each section so it is probably better as a physical book. It does work on a Kindle and you can do the double tap thing to zoom in on all the pictures (some are very tiny so you definitely want to zoom) The book is appropriate for young people or adults (at least junior high on up). The author also provided information on ways in which up apply your letters to things like gift tags and table settings.
The Botanical Hand Lettering Workbook is full of beautiful and creative inspiration to get beginning botanical hand letters a start. With many examples of how botanical art can be used and simple but effective art prompts, I highly suggest this book to anyone who wants to learn or improve their botanical hand lettering.
**I received this book for free through Goodreads Giveaways**
A very cute and fun little book. It is about 7" x 7" making it the perfect portable size for a workbook. There are all kinds of step by step instructions for flowers, plants, and even fruit with plenty of room to practice on your own in the book. There are step by step instructions on several different fonts, also with room to practice on predrawn lines. There are grids and graphs that show you how to combine styles and set up designs. I think my only complaint it that there are some gorgeous detailed alphabets made completely of flowers but there are no step by step directions to go along with them. I would have loved an example of a letter from each of the alphabets that simplified it for me. The author did do that for one alphabet so I'm not sure why the others didn't get the same treatment. Still pretty easy if you are good at copying though.
I received this today from winning a giveaway here on goodreads. I'm so excited to get started using it! The tips and tricks she provided are very thorough and helpful. There are plenty of practice pages which is great for me because practice makes perfect with these kinds of things. I really like the amount of examples she's provided, they are very helpful to use as a guide for lettering. She also has really cool lettering examples she's done! I almost want to color them in and place them as wall decor.
Cute book for drawing floral decorative borders, hand-lettering and flourishes. The step-by-step is fine, although a few would have benefited from another step or two. Great for practice and expanding your hand-lettering and embellishing skills.
There are blank pages so you can practice, with encouraging remarks so you want to practice. Small format, would make a nice gift, too.
It's a cute book, but not the best resource I've seen. The quality of the lettering and drawings in the book feel photocopied and a bit sloppy, rather than crisp and professional.
I have wanted this book for quite some time, so when it went on sale for under $10 I jumped at the chance to get it. I really had high hopes for this book. I fully expected to give it 5 stars based on the lovely cover. There are plenty of practice pages. The instructions for some of the flowers and design elements give step by step pictures, but for almost everything else it is just the font exemplars and then a practice page. The other thing is the book is considerably smaller than most lettering workbooks. I write big and on most of the pages the area for practice is just too small for me. The book measures just under 7" square. I should have looked further down in the description to see the size of the book before ordering. My favorite page is number 189, however it would have been nice to have seen a process on how to do those beautiful numbers. I am very sad that I couldn't give this a better review.
