Слід зазначити, що Меріме готувався до написання есе про Хмельницького дуже ретельно. Він простудіював усі існуючі на той час історичні праці про Хмельниччину, намагаючись уникнути тенденційності, опрацьовував історичні документи із різних джерел - українських, польських, французьких, російських.

Звичайно, сучасні історики знаходять у праці Меріме багато неточностей та домислів, однак варто мати на увазі, що письменник не ставив за мету передати суху хронологію фактів. Його радше цікавила глибинна мотивація учасників тієї кривавої війни. Меріме симпатизує Гетьманові Богдану та його козакам, які, відстоюючи свою гідність та волю, кинули виклик усій католицькій Європі. У той же час, письменник виказує розуміння польській шляхті, яка щиро захищає освячений церквою світопорядок, у якому немає місця для бунтівних схизматиків.

Власне, саме відсторонення автора, його «нейтралітет» у козацько-шляхетському конфлікті надає твору додаткової цінності і дозволяє українським читачам поглянути на нашу історію під іншим кутом.

About the author

Prosper Mérimée was a French dramatist, historian, archaeologist, and short story writer. He is perhaps best known for his novella Carmen, which became the basis of Bizet's opera Carmen.

Mérimée loved mysticism, history, and the unusual, and may have been influenced by Charles Nodier (though he did not appreciate his works), the historical fiction popularised by Sir Walter Scott and the cruelty and psychological drama of Aleksandr Pushkin. Many of his stories are mysteries set in foreign places, Spain and Russia being popular sources of inspiration.

In 1834, Mérimée was appointed to the post of inspector-general of historical monuments. He was a born archaeologist, combining linguistic faculty of a very unusual kind with accurate scholarship, with remarkable historical appreciation, and with a sincere love for the arts of design and construction, in the former of which he had some practical skill. In his official capacity he published numerous reports, some of which, with other similar pieces, have been republished in his works.
He was also responsible for several translations of Pushkin and Gogol, when they weren't known in Europe yet.

I'm not a big fan of historical non-fiction books. They remind me of boring school textbooks. But this one, despite all the signs of boring textbooks, strikes me as different. I think it differs mainly in that it is centered around the specific person and his actions, rather than the history in general. Plus, the author added his opinion, which sometimes contested historical sources, and sometimes remained only at the level of assumptions.

Prosper Merimee did a great job portraying one of the greatest Ukrainian Hetmans. Bohdan Khmelnytsky had a great influence on the history of Ukraine, but the author made additional efforts to explain this influence through his personal qualities and historical conditions.

Надзвичайно приємно читати, як цей іноземець пише про Україну. Проте, все ж, очевидним стає, що послуговується російськими джерелами, зокрема Костомаровим. Не вникав у суть Переяславської угоди і подавав її як підданство України Росії і перетворення України на російську провінцію
