I Scream You Scream
Reality TV, ghosts, and a vengeful psychic medium—Bethany’s life is about to get weird.
After years of small-town stagnation, Bethany James is haunted by her grandmother’s ghost, who will not rest until Bethany finally pursues her lifelong dreams of adventure. Her ticket out? Paranormal For Realz, a new reality TV show where ghost-hunting meets celebrity chaos. The show is seeking permanent hosts, and five hilariously mismatched teams are competing for the coveted spots. Partnered with the fabulous drag queen Pippa Pizzaz, Bethany is thrust into haunted B&Bs, viral sleepwalking scandals, and supernatural showdowns that are anything but scripted.
With her sarcasm sharp and her intuition sharper, she’ll have to navigate grumpy poltergeists, even grumpier psychics, and two wildly different romantic interests to survive the first round of haunted investigations. She is, after all, not just chasing a new career. She’s chasing the life she never thought possible.
I Scream You Scream is genre-bending paranormal women’s fiction meets rom-com, where one “odd duck” heroine battles specters, social media, and her own fears with a little help from her sequined sidekick and a grandmother who refuses to stay dead.

I read I Scream You Scream by author Beverly Zech.
Bethany James dreamed of being a world traveler her whole childhood. A life of grand adventure. After college family needs called her back to small town Missouri, and in the blink of an eye she had been teaching high school for 20 years. Then along comes the ghost of her feisty and opinionated grandmother giving her the kick Bethany needed to reach for her dream.
Bethany applies and gets selected to compete to be the host on a new show about ghost hunters. And where this takes her next is the stuff of reality TV and social media gold…along with some very quirky teammates, sketchy competition, a handsome cameraman….and supernatural antics and mystery!
This book was complete fun to read! The characters are so very endearing…or exasperating. Bethany’s partner in the hunt, popular Drag Queen Pippa Pizzaz is a fabulous treasure. There is laugh out loud humor, mystery and suspense. And a sprinkle of potential romance.
This is book one of a coming series. There is a small taste of it at the end of the book and I was hooked. I think it will lean more scary-spooky than this one and I can’t wait to find out! I’m certainly a fan of Bethany James and crew.
Definitely recommend.
I received an advanced reader copy from the author. This is my voluntary and honest review.

This book was such a fun surprise! If you're looking for something that blends paranormal mystery, rom-com, and women's fiction with a huge dose of humour, this is one to add to your TBR.
The banter throughout this book is absolutely incredible. I found myself laughing out loud more than once, and the witty dialogue made every interaction feel so natural and entertaining.
The premise is wonderfully quirky—seeing a vision of your dead grandma somehow lands you as the presenter of a paranormal ghost-hunting TV show. It's delightfully chaotic, and I loved every minute of it.
Our wonderfully "odd duck" heroine is impossible not to root for as she navigates ghosts, social media chaos, and her own insecurities. Add in a fabulously sequined sidekick and a grandmother who refuses to stay dead, and you've got a cast that keeps you smiling from beginning to end.
This is a genre-bending read that balances laugh-out-loud moments with heart, supernatural shenanigans, and just the right touch of romance. If you enjoy stories that don't take themselves too seriously while still delivering lovable characters and plenty of charm, I definitely recommend picking this one up.
👻 Paranormal 💕 Rom-com 📺 Ghost-hunting TV show 😂 Top-tier banter ✨ Quirky characters

Meet Bethany, a normal, small town gal who stayed in her tiny home town ten years too long. We understand. She needs a change and decides to try something new. After all, staying in grandma’s old farmhouse alone with her ghost doesn’t seem like the best option for Bethany’s future. It’s definitely not helping her love life. She starts looking for a new job and happens upon a casting call for a new reality show, Paranormal For Realz. If she’s already seeing Grandma Sternberg’s ghost, might as well join a show about ghost hunting, right? The rest of the story is immensely entertaining and comical. Adding in the rest of the cast of the show, including her teammate Pippa Pizzaz, a freakishly tall drag queen who can read minds and has a keen eye for fashion. The character development was good and the main character is insanely relatable. I loved how normal she was. If you like ghost stories that are funny, you must read I Scream You Scream.

Ok so this book has everything that makes my ears stand up like the goodest boy. I was attracted to the cover alone but as soon as I saw paranormal investigation reality show, I sprinted to read this. Needless to say, I’M OBSESSED.
This was the perfect mix of humour, drama and spooky vibes. It was spooky enough that I couldn’t read before bed because I’m an anxious gooorl but the character interactions were funny enough that I wanted to suffer anyways because I loved these little beans.
Bethany was my kind of woman. She was a walking tornado which I absolutely relate to. Pippa had me screaming YOU BETTA WERK because drag queens are life and RuPaul’s Drag Race is another one of my comfort shows. Ginny and Bobert absolutely surprised me and had me laughing and I want more of them.
Anyways, I’m begging you to read this dadgum book because I am absolutely floored at how fun and unique this was.

now, let me preface by saying i’m not usually a romcom fan. i’ve read a few, and while they’re not bad, they’re not my cup of tea. I Scream You Scream was SUCH a pleasant surprise. i’ve been putting off doing a review for a hot minute because life has been hectic, but in that time i’ve read the book twice.
the plot was very fun, but the characters feeling so real and human is what did it for me. bethany was cute and quirky in a relatable way, and her mawmaw was written beautifully. but pippa, my darling pippa. pippa is a breath of fresh air coming from an author that lives in the south. beautifully written. i really loved that because this is first book in the series, there was just a hint of romance. it builds tension, and again makes the book feel more real. i can’t wait for more of this, and more of Beverly’s work.

This book did not disappoint! Bethany James, once an adventurous girl, has realized her life has become unadventurous after her dead grandmother’s ghost pays her a visit. To bust out of her rut and start living again, Bethany applies to be the host of Paranormal For Realz, a new reality show investigating all things ghosts! The only problem is that she has to compete against other teams to get the job. Each of the teams are given a paranormal place to investigate and capture ghost sightings. The characters in the book are well written! Bethany and her partner have big personalities! The other contestants have their own style and quirks. The paranormal aspect is a fun twist and the colorful language and expressions make this book fun and entertaining!

Absolutely wonderful! Not much of a mystery reader or reality TV watcher, but this book kept me on my toes. Extremely thankful to get an early copy of You Scream, I Scream. Truly was hanging on to every word.
Queen Pippa might just be my favorite character of the book. The pizazz (for lack of a better word, iykyk) she has was just perfect. Teaming up with Bethany was a match made in haunted heaven. 🤪 I am so excited to see what the next book brings for these two possible TV stars!

If you love the paranormal, this is a must-read! The characters are fun and quirky. The story is written so well and makes you feel like you are right in the middle of a Ghost Hunters episode.
You don't need to know the lingo or how anything works because the characters are learning it to! I can't wait to read more!

I loved every moment of this book! The characters had such a great range of emotions that jumped off the page. The plot was amazing and I couldn’t put it down. I found myself reacting to the characters with laughter, kicking my feet, scowls and smiling ear to ear. I am now a forever fan of Beverly’s writing and will read everything she ever published!

I really enjoyed this book! It was such a unique and creative story, and I especially loved that it was set in the New Braunfels and surrounding area. The setting made the story feel familiar and fun, while the plot kept me engaged. I also had the pleasure of meeting Beverly recently, and she was absolutely delightful! Overall, this was a great read and definitely a book I would recommend!

And I’m glad I did. This book was an absolute delight to read. The character development is fantastic, as is the story. Because of Beverly’s descriptive storytelling, felt like I knew the characters and could envision all of the locations and events throughout. I found myself not wanting to put it down, and I can’t wait to see how Beth and Pippa’s friendship grows throughout the series!

*I received an ARC of this novel from the author and her team. All thoughts below are my own.*
Bethany is in a rut. A funk. A slump. Familial obligations have derailed her plans for the zesty, adventurous life she’s dreamed of since childhood.
With a shove from her late grandmother’s ghost and a push from her best friend, Bethany is determined to find a new career to satisfy her neglected inner child. She needs something thrilling and meaningful, refreshing and rewarding, spirited and soul-stirring.
Naturally, she joins a competition reality show in hopes of becoming the permanent host of Paranormal For Realz. Bethany is launched into the world of the occult and must endure all the shenanigans that the preternatural comes with. She meets a gaggle of other quirky and hilarious individuals, one of note being her teammate Pippa Pizzaz, a drag queen of substantial stature with the sass to match.
The premise of this book is fun and unique, touching on multiple genres that make it a well-rounded story of thrills, romance, laughs, and self-discovery. The protagonists are likable and easy to root for. Grandma’s ghost will crack you up and inspire you to get your butt in gear in the same breath.
My only critiques were that: the romance didn’t quite feel fully fleshed-out, the writing style occasionally contained more “telling, not showing” than I personally prefer, and the dialogue often felt a little long-winded and unnatural. These are all things I believe could be easily improved on in the next installment of the series.
Overall, this was a fresh, fun story with tons of originality and heart!

In a world where ghosts roam B&Bs and old farmhouses (hers to be precise), Bethany James seeks adventure and possibly a new career path, but first she must survive her fellow competitors and the ghosts, always the ghosts.
Bethany’s journey for a new life really captured my imagination especially when she finds a reality TV show auditioning for contestants. I loved the tension until she’s finally chosen and meets the crew and members of her team. She downplays her fears which are legion, but she rises to the challenges of competing with celebrities, and sassy supernatural beings with her sassy attitude and natural abilities. I love a kickass female protagonist and a good ghost story!
Beverly Zech’s masterful world building skills sets a realistic framework that kept my on the edge of my seat. The fact that Zech owns and uses all the paranormal equipment she had Bethany using on the show impressed me and brought another level of interest to the book.
I Scream You Scream, by Beverly Zech delivers a fun read that will have you turning pages into the night. Will Bethany capture her dream-man’s eye? Will she overcome her Bethageddon nickname? Will she become a permanent host on the Paranormal for Realz TV show? Readers must add this perfect summer read to their collections and find out!

5⭐
I present to you the “born to be a star”, former history teacher, Bethany James.
In this episode of her life she teams up with the sassy, best dressed, southern queen, Pippa. And let me tell you, they leave no crumbs behind.
This is a paranormal comedy that gives you some hobby jeebies and makes you snort out loud. (I do not recommend to serve it with liquids, the sort laughs come out of nowhere)
Bethany James, is a woman full of life that earns for adventure, but as it happens, life got in the way. Pippa, her new partner, is a drag queen that needs the refresh button for her life as an entertainer.
As they start their adventure in Texas, in a known to have some ghosts around B&B, their lives are probably going to be forever changed.
The guest appearances of Grandma Sternberg, the ghost, make for a delicious cherry on top in the dynamic duo. She quite often swoops in at the exact right moment to put a pompous a$$ in his place or save the day in the ghost hunting business. After all, what doesn't a loving grandma do for her niece?
Take a chance on this paranormal comedy with a hint of thriller. Beware, it’s the start of a series so the HEA is yet to come.

I Scream, You Scream by Beverly Zech feels like what you’d get if Ghost Hunters met MTV’s Road Rules, a fun and quirky premise that leans heavily on humor and character interactions. The book is undeniably lighthearted, with a jovial tone and plenty of banter that makes it an easy, entertaining read.
That said, as a romantic comedy, it fell a bit short for me. The romance and comedy elements never fully came together in a satisfying way, leaving the story feeling somewhat undefined in terms of genre. It’s enjoyable, but not quite as sharp or memorable as I hoped it would be.
The standout for me was the grandmother, who absolutely stole every scene she appeared in. Her presence added a spark that the rest of the story sometimes lacked, and I found myself wishing she had a much larger role.
Overall, this is a pleasant, amusing read, but one that doesn’t fully deliver on its rom-com potential.

I absolutely loved I Scream, You Scream by Beverly Zech! The characters were so well developed that I became invested in them almost immediately. They felt real, relatable, and were a big part of what made this book so enjoyable.
The humor was another highlight. The writing is incredibly witty, and I actually laughed out loud several times—a rarity for me when reading.
What impressed me most, though, was how well the supernatural elements were done. They were genuinely eerie and suspenseful without ever feeling cheesy or over-the-top. The story struck the perfect balance between humor, heart, and creepy moments.
If you’re looking for a fun, clever read with memorable characters and supernatural twists that are actually spooky, I highly recommend this book. I couldn’t put it down! Can’t wait for the next book in the Bethany James series!

A new favorite. This book starts off with Bethany who lives in a small town in a farm house she inherited from her grandma when she passed away. Not only does her best friend want her to live a more adventurous life but her grandma to (you'll have to read to understand that) So she decides to job hunt when she stumbles upon an ad on Craigslist for a paranormal TV show called Paranormal For Realz. You'll have to read to know more. This book was overall an amazing read from the humor to the characters (my favorite was Pippa) If you love a book that will have you kicking your feet into the wee hours but also cozy and has a bit of spook then this is the read for you. Highly Recommend!

Ghosts and things that creak in the night, new friendships, lost loves and deep heartache. All this is found in Bev Zech's newest book. Set in the one and only New Braunfels, Texas, with accurate details (that's a plus), this story will capture your heart until the very end. Bev is a delightful storyteller and paints a fun story of an unlikely pair trying to find ethereal beings and win the hearts of America in a reality television show competition. This story will capture your attention to the very end and make you wish for the next one in the series.

Arc Review:
Holy smokes that was hella-fun! Think Big Brother x Supernatural with a wonderfully funny a main character, a drag queen side-kick, and a grandmother slash guardian angel! For people who like their scares on the more comical side. This book was always entertaining with no drag.
I loved the fact that I could relate to the main character. Slightly chubby, older woman who is doing the best she can and still kicks ass? Sign me up!
My only gripe is that I need to read the rest of these books ASAP and they aren't out yet. Whyyyy?
Looking forward to the next one!
