December 31, 2022I am always looking for things to learn about my father's birth country, Portugal, and it would be nice to visit one day. However, my father is from the north of Portugal and there is just one road trip that runs close to the town and it is a wine country road trip. Sadly not my area of interest. And I would need to detour quite far from the trip guide to visit the town of Chaves.
It would have been nice to see more pictures, but it was interesting either way.

I love all the books in Lonely Planet's "best of" series. They are a great place to start planning.

With this book, you get all of the good things you normally expect from Lonely Planet. Well detailed information, solid research, interesting ideas for off-the-beaten path exploration. There are tons of great ideas for road trips here. This is a book that you use to do your research at home, and then leave it at home, because it's rather useless to you on your trip. I bought this book because I was torn between a trip to Spain and a trip to Portugal (ultimately selected Portugal, for reasons having nothing to do with the book). I wanted to consider my options. I had hoped for road trips that would give me a variety of ways to pack the major sights into a 10-12 day trip while leaving time for interesting side trips. But more than half of the road trips detailed in this book contain none of the "major" sights. So for me, this is probably a great book for someone who has already been to one or both of these countries and who is looking to do a deeper dive... Or for people who really want to wander off the beaten path and could care less about seeing the "major" sights... But not for me. Hence, the 3 stars.

With a variety of specific routes and highlights, this is a very good e-book for ideas when traveling the Iberian peninsula. I especially appreciated the hyperlinks within the book to allow you create your own adventure.
As with any pre-trip research, this book will not be a solitary resource, but will be useful for ideas and high-level information.
