A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. I think this is the last Lonely Planet book I’ll buy. End of an era. It’s not that the books are bad. It’s just that Trip Advisor and other online sites have become so much better. Okay, the shift probably happened decades ago. I’m just a Luddite. I’m somehow saddened that I’ll no longer buy these books. They were a security blanket for the traveler. They felt cheeky. I remember a line about a Tunisian site: This inland archeological site is very hot. Only Englishmen and dogs will be able to handle the heat. This turned out to be almost true. My Tunisian wife accused me of trying to kill off her parents by making them travel there. Her friend called the trip a suicide mission. I’ll miss my Lonely Planet guides.

With the advent of travel vlogs it’s hard to see how guides like this will remain relevant. The one part of the book I did enjoy was not the list of places and things to stay or eat at but the history, architecture and culture towards the end of the book.
