Si, en ouvrant le premier tome de cette étonnante série, vous pensiez lire une banale affaire d'enlèvement, une énième histoire de flics ou une simple intrigue fantastique... vous savez aujourd'hui que le monde de Soil est bien plus fou que cela. Quelle terrible péripétie a bien pu entacher la construction de cette ville modèle, pour que les événements bizarres amorcés par la disparition de la famille Suzushiro prennent une telle ampleur ? Les agents Yokoi et Onoda trouveront-ils enfin un sens à cette folie ?

Cosa non è questo manga...

partiamo dai disclaimer: non è un manga per tutti, non è un manga facile, non è un manga da leggere troppo dilazionato nel tempo, è un manga che a fine storia vi porterà a sfogliare nuovamente i volumi precendenti alla ricerca di risposte non trovate e domande non poste o poste in modo sbagliato (io l'ho fatto e a me è servito).

Ci troveremo davanti una storia fottutamente fuori di testa, più andrà avanti e più si infittirà di domande, avremmo risposte ma molte apriranno più domande anzi che chiuderle, personalmente non ho trovato risposta a tutto, forse l'autore non vuole rispondere a tutto, ma per farvi capire la sensazione che mi trasmette, è la stessa che provo quando concludo alcune storie di Dick, giusto per scomodare una personcina qualunque.

Ad oggi sono ancora trigheratissimo per alcune domande che si arovellano nella mia testa a cui non riesco a trovare risposta, quindi cerco di darla io ....ma sarà davvero quella giusta?

Capolavoro, che sicuramente non piacerà a tutti, per me bomba !

Concludo con un discorso che penso possa riassumere la filosofia dentro questa manga presa direttamente da esso:

(Penso che al mondo esistano misteri in grado di essere svelati e altri che non possono essere risolti, misteri "puri", che hanno solo lo scopo di esistere in quanto tali.)

My first impression about the art while reading the prologue chapter was: Did Zainul Abedin draw this manga?

'Soil' was certainly a hard take on mystery genre from my behalf as I didn't like the art to begin with. The characters have a natural fluidity and the beginning also smelled like supernatural mystery knocking on the door which, at first, I thought could become worthwhile. But at the end, without my sole purpose of finishing this just for 'the finishing', there's no reason to continue this.

The story becomes too dense like it's art at some point & at some point it becomes really bothersome to read this (if you are reading this on phone like me). At the middle of the story, the mystery doesn't even remain as one and you just have to force your way out to the solution. That's all there is to it.

La série est glauque. C'est un mélange d'enquêtes policières, de paranormal / science-fiction et d'événements malsains (abus sexuels, meurtres, etc). Les personnages sont globalement tous antipathiques, étranges ou dérangés et on a droit à de multiples passages dégoutants. S'y ajoute un dessin moderne et travaillé, mais il est trop chargé et le fait qu'il n'y ait pas de nuances de gris et que ça soit dessiné à l'ordinateur n'était pas à mon goût. Le scénario est globalement maitrisé, on sent que le mangaka voulait appuyer le glauque des personnages et l'ambiance oppressante, mais ça n'a pas suffit pour que je prenne plaisir à lire la série.

Incredible.

One of the best manga I’ve ever read, bar none. It is definitely not going to be for everyone. There’s not a “satisfactory” resolution to the central mystery, although there are some surface layer answers. But, as is stated multiple times throughout, “This mystery was never meant to be solved.”

I loved it from start to finish. The art and the paneling are exquisite, as is the writing. For fans of Twin Peaks, David Lynch, and True Detective season 1, I can give this an unqualified recommendation. Simply one of the best mystery stories I’ve ever read.

La fin d'une série folle. Pour ceux qui aiment les histoires d'horreur magnifiques, où l'on ne comprend pas tout. Amateurs de David Lynch, cet univers est pour vous!
Après quelques tomes où l'on erre sans savoir du tout où l'on erre, l'épisode final est remarquablement et paradoxalement simple.
Un trip hallucinant!

A lovely and apt ending for an intriguing series on the supernatural mystery. Despite the lack of any direct explanation on every single detail (there is a generic explanation on extraneous bodies in a previous issue, but not one for each of the weird things that happen in the series), I am left with the feeling that all things have a logic, however not immediately obvious it may be.
I liked this manga a lot. In fact, I haven't enjoyed a manga for years before delving into Soil, but I knew Atsushi wouldn't disappoint me. I have always liked his take on the genre, how it's manga yet not exactly manga in its artistic and storytelling style.
A recommended read.
