This dark fantasy romance blends angels, demons, forbidden love, secret identities, deception, survival, and powerful chemistry into one gripping story. Jet, an angel sent to Hell’s Black Mansion to investigate a missing angel, instead discovers Kit, a demon disguised as an angel who has spent years trapped there under the protection of the dangerous Alastor. As their connection deepens, Jet becomes determined to save her no matter the cost. Told in dual POV with flashbacks that add depth to the characters and world, the story works as a standalone while still connecting to the Veil of Shadows universe through multiple linked epilogues.

A prequel to one of my favorite series? Yes please!😍
This flowed seamlessly into book one of the Veil Of Shadows: Second Generation series! How M.R. keeps all of this in chronological order and perfectly in line, I have no idea. But I’m so glad I get to read & experience it.
This addition to the Shadow world was centralized around Kit, an Angel disguised Demon woman, enslaved to Alastor in the Black Mansion, and the Demon glamoured Angel that saved her, our MMC, Jet.
As always, I loved the FMC in this one too. Kit was so easy to fall in love with. Tricked and manipulated at a young age, doing what is needed to survive, all while fighting back in small ways that eventually added up.
The MMC’s in this series continue to be of the “touch her & d*e” category and Jet fits perfectly in with the rest. He risked everything for Kit’s freedom & I loved reading it.
✨Thank you BookSirens & M.R. Pritchard for the ARC!✨
Okay, Meredith, what’s next??✍🏼

The classic tale of angels vs demons is what drew me into this book. I genuinely enjoyed the main characters and general plot of the story. The moments between Kit and Jet gave them more depth and helped my understanding of them as characters beyond following their journey in the book. Their dynamic is what kept me engaged, as well as wondering where the plot was headed as the secrets of the black mansion came to light. For me, I struggled with the pacing and the time jumps between chapters had me questioning how we got to this point and doing go backs of previous chapters to see if I missed anything. It didn’t feel rushed, and the chapters were well written and thought out - I think the timeline to me felt choppy in some places. It was not enough to discourage me from finishing which speaks to how I became invested in the characters. Overall I enjoyed this read and am glad I finished it

Spice Scale: 5/10 (spicy scenes, blood drinking/biting/letting kink)
Overall Vibe: I can't believe they're not vampires
This is a prequel to the already established Veil of Shadows romantasy series. There are many, many books in the series. There are possibly seventeen if I'm counting correctly. It is supposed to be enjoyable as a standalone. I have no prior knowledge of the series but this is not the first time I've read a book in a long running romantasy series with no context. I have some experience being thrown in the deep end of some smut.
It just does not work as a standalone for me. I would consider most of the spice mild. There are sexual scenes but they're fairly tame. I didn't take detailed notes but there's at least one with full intercourse described as "pressure" and "pressing". There is a good bit of biting and blood drinking. To be clear these are angels and devils. Not vampires. The dedication of the book mentions vampires and includes a quote from Dracula. This book contains no vampires. Unless you count demons drinking blood as vampires. Yeah, okay, that could count under a technicality. We're getting into "can a zombie and a ghost come from the same body" territory at that point.
I didn't understand the world or the lore. I'm not sure how either kingdom operated or what the Mansion was really doing besides being a pleasure house. The book, as a standalone, didn't really flesh anything out. The angels were pretty awful and it wasn't clear what they were accomplishing with Jet's mission by the end.
I had multiple instances of déjà vu when reading this. I swore certain phrases, paragraphs and dialogue had already happened. This isn't a book playing with time or time travel. Scenes are just really repetitive and similar across chapters. It was actually super distracting. The chapters are really disjointed and time passes between them but it's never really defined. Is it days that Jet has been at the Mansion doing reconnaissance? Weeks?
There was a chapter where Jet is sitting with Sable, a demon he has recently met, and his coconspirator Rusk shows up. Rusk starts talking about very obviously secret stuff right in front of Sable. It's like this conversation should have happened away from him but didn't for some reason. There was no background on Sable or why he could be trusted and he disappears from the story after this chapter. I guess it's possible there was more background for Sable that showed him being a trustworthy friend. Rusk doesn't get much character development either but at least he doesn't get vanished from the story completely. We at least know he's a demon working with Babylon. Sable literally gets swept out of the story with no explanation. Forgotten.
There are multiple epilogues with giant time skips. The time passing is at least defined in these chapters. These epilogues serve to tie the book into the rest of the series. It throws so many new characters at you at the very end expecting you to recognize them and their importance. You just don't care by that point. I can't pretend to care about Dacre, who shows up and is apparently super special, when I have no idea who he is. He isn't introduced until 70% of the way through the story and Kit acts like she just knows him and trusts him implicitly. There are so many characters introduced in the epilogues. Dacre, a Queen of Hell, another guy whose name starts with A, a princess, Remington, Chel and probably someone else but I didn't really take notes. It's overwhelming. There's also an added castle that for some reason Kit and Jet are able to visit without any problem. If Kit can go dress shopping or visit a rebel castle why can't she just leave the Mansion? Her soul being sold is brought up often but not the actual logistics and implications of that.
If you have read the other books in this series and enjoyed them you probably will enjoy this one too. If you have no idea what this series is about and want either an entry point or a standalone I can't say this is where I would start. I would consider getting the first Veil of Shadows book if you really want an introduction to this series. If you just want some standalone angel/devil smut I'd probably skip.
Note: I would rate this a 2.5 but we're rounding up to 3 in memory of Sable. Gone and totally forgotten but still in our hearts.

Thank you, BookSirens and the author, M.R. Pritchard, for letting me ARC read this!
This book had a really intriguing premise and a strong atmospheric feel, but for me it worked more as a mood driven story than a fully developed narrative.
One of the highlights was the concept itself. The idea of angels, demons, and a morally gray world inside the Mansion was interesting and felt different enough to catch my attention. The naming throughout the story was creative, and I appreciated the care put into certain details, especially Gabriel’s observant nature and the way he carried himself. Alastor was also a standout; his dialogue was witty, theatrical, and perfectly captured that charming but dangerous energy. I enjoyed Jet’s softness and compassion, as well as Kit’s. Their instinct to care for others made them likable, and the dynamic between them had some genuinely sweet moments.
The romance, while not extremely slow burn, wasn’t instant either. When the characters actually interacted, those scenes were enjoyable. Tonally, the book had a very strong aesthetic, and the contrast of ordinary things existing in Hell, like soda and grilled cheese, added an oddly humorous touch that made the setting feel more surreal than grim. Additionally, after reading a lot of first person narration lately, the third person perspective felt refreshing.
Where the book struggled for me was in execution and clarity. Much of the story felt like it wasn’t actively moving forward, and then major developments would happen suddenly without enough buildup or explanation. For example, characters like Sable appear briefly with little introduction and no real impact, which made their presence feel random rather than meaningful.
There were also several moments where the internal logic didn’t quite hold together. The rules surrounding angels, such as their supposed inability to lie, didn’t seem consistent with what actually happens. The situation with Kit’s wings was confusing as well: they were magically bound early on, but later there is suddenly a harness involved with no clear explanation of when or how that changed. Scenes involving the imprisoned girls raised similar questions; if escape was physically possible, it was never fully addressed why no one attempted it in a meaningful way.
Character reactions sometimes felt mismatched to the weight of events. Kit forgives major betrayals very quickly, which lessened the emotional impact, and Jet’s shift from a gentle, empathetic figure to someone making morally heavy decisions felt abrupt rather than developed. Because of this, the characters weren’t unlikable, but they also didn’t feel as emotionally immersive as they could have.
Structurally, the pacing felt uneven. The main portion of the book moves slowly, with limited plot progression, while the ending compresses large developments into a short span of time. The multiple prologues add to this rushed feeling, presenting significant events and time shifts very quickly instead of allowing them to unfold naturally.
Overall, this is a story with a strong vibe, an imaginative foundation, and some compelling character moments, but it leans heavily on atmosphere rather than delivering a tightly structured plot or fully explored character arcs. I didn’t dislike the book, but I was left wishing the storytelling had matched the strength of its concept.
A few personal icks for me were Jet’s nickname for Kit. Starlight is so overused; it’s insane. Also, when he told her to shut up? That was unnecessary harsh in my opinion.

This book felt like wandering into a gothic fever dream where angels fell into Hell, demons were surprisingly human, and nothing was quite as simple as it looked.

The premise alone was delicious. An angel trapped in a morally grey underworld called the Black Mansion, where good and evil blur together until you’re not entirely sure which side you’re rooting for anymore. The atmosphere was THICK with mood, the kind of writing that wraps around you like spice & smoke. The descriptive language does some heavy lifting, every room, every conversation feels DRENCHED in aesthetic. The world itself was intriguing and full of potential; surreal touches like everyday human things existing in Hell added a strange, relatable quality that worked in the story’s favor to captivate the reader.
Character-wise, there were some standouts. Gabriel brought this quiet, observant presence that made you lean in, while Alastor absolutely stole scenes with his theatrical, sharp-tongued, dangerous charm. Jet and Kit added softness to the chaos, their compassion gave the story little pockets of warmth in an otherwise cut-throat world.

The romance sat in that not-quite-instant, not-quite-slow-burn space, but the tension hit. The eye contact stole the freaking show. Kit & Jet’s dynamic carried a lot of the emotional weight and kept you invested.

✨ Angels in Hell + gothic vibes
✨ Morally grey characters everywhere
✨ Atmospheric, moody writing
✨ Angst-driven romance
It’s an engrossing, aesthetic-heavy read with a strong concept and moments that really dig in. This book acts as a prequel to the Veil of Shadows series, so there’s something even bigger lurking just beneath the surface.

“Kit looked toward the door, thinking of the Red Room, the wings Alastor had cut from her body for show, the way patrons had cheered. She remembered Delva’s final breath on the stage. The taste of her own blood.” Page 336
Demons and Angels is written in a dark romantic tone that is quite seductive and engaging. The imaginary and world-building around the Black Mansion slowly came to life as I followed Kit and Jet’s experiences and relationship. The novel is well written and has all the elements of a dark, supernatural, romantic novel.
What didn't work for me was Kit’s character development, the personification of Demons and Angels, and the plot. Without revealing too much, Kit is abused from left to right by demon Alastor and then enters a controlling relationship with Jet. Yes, she is someone who went through trauma and learned to play the game to survive the Black mansion. Yes, she tries to save a group of mortal girls from the mansion’s horrors, but Kit’s essence is circular in that she can not really stand up for herself or be independent from the other characters’ needs. Kit is in victim mode the entire novel and is too codependent on Jet’s moves and decisions.
My second point is that Demons and Angels are too similar in their character DNA. Angels are cruel, blood thirsty and seem quite vicious. It really felt like reading a novel about demons. And my last point is that, even though the novel is character-driven, it feels like there isn't really a plot beyond Kit and Jet’s relationship and their survival in the Black Mansion. There are too many epilogues, probably intended to strengthen the plot. Honestly, they read like prose bombing. In my opinion, this section would work better if it were integrated into the novel.
I think it is an interesting concept, and the chemistry between Kit and Jet is erotic and well written. The plot, the personification, and the distinction between demons and angels all need more work.

Thank you to the author and publisher via BookSirens for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
House of Devils & Angels is a standalone dark gothic supernatural story that immediately drew me in. I was hooked from the very beginning and found the central premise—an angel in hell—both intriguing and full of potential.
The story is very tightly focused on the FMC and MMC, with minimal involvement from supporting characters. While I appreciated the strong focus on the main relationship, I did feel that the side characters were underutilised. There was clear potential for them to add depth and richness to the story, but ultimately they felt a bit flat and underdeveloped.
In terms of the main characters, I struggled to fully connect with the FMC, as her development didn’t quite flow for me. On the other hand, I much preferred the MMC’s character arc and found his progression more engaging. That said, the angst between the two was a definite highlight—I really enjoyed their dynamic and the tension woven throughout their relationship.
The world-building had a strong foundation and an overall concept that I found compelling, with hints of a much larger universe behind the story. However, the ending didn’t quite land for me. The multiple epilogues, which jumped forward in time repeatedly, felt rushed and slightly disjointed. It gave the impression that the story was trying to tie into a broader world spanning the author’s other books—something that may work better for readers already familiar with that universe, but felt a little less satisfying as a standalone.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read - 3.5 rounded to a 4* with a great core idea and plenty of potential. While there were aspects I would have liked to see explored more deeply, I still found it to be an engaging and worthwhile story for fans of dark gothic supernatural romance.

This was my first book in this universe/by this author and I wasn’t sure what to expect! I appreciate the opportunity to arc read this, as it isnt something I would have necessarily picked up on my own :)
Kit is such a strong character when the beginning of her story starts so young. She goes through so much and continues to do her best in doing what is right which I really appreciated. I liked Jet a lot too but I wish we got to know him better; it felt like we got a very baseline idea of him and nothing about who he is at his core! Overall, loyalty seems like one of his most defining characteristics. I truly wish this story had been a bit longer and had more information/world building/character insight. I feel like I would have enjoyed it more with a bit more depth. I know now that this is an interconnected stand alone book, so I realize that there may be information that was in other parts of the story that would give more insight so it is very possible that there are things that I am simply unaware of!
It was quite a bit shorter than I had anticipated and the pacing moved fairly quickly; I was able to finish in about 7 hours total give or take! I had no problems with the pacing, and nothing in the writing was offensive or extremely off putting to me. There were a few areas where I felt that a section read strangely and I found myself re-reading it a couple of times to make sure I was understanding correctly. The time skips throughout the epilogues made me wish we were given more information about what exactly was occurring in each one.

I got this as an ARC from booksirens.
An Angel in Hell is unheard of. Kit is an Angel in Hell, but lives a life of lies.
Jet is an Angel in heaven that doesn’t really belong to any one kingdom. There’s a rumor of an Angel stuck in Hell. He’s sent on a mission by the archangels to find the Angel in Hell and report back.
The Black Mansion. Alastor’s masterpiece. A place that traffics humans girls. A place for Hell’s misfits and those that owe a debt. A place where demons can come to gamble, drink blood and indulge in anything they like. A place where demons can come to drool over the Angel.
Jet and Kit have a fast burn romance. They both have secrets to discover and expose. They work together to expose the secrets of the mansion and to save the human girls.
Mystery, romance, betrayal, sin, lust, and more!
A random ARC pick for me but I liked the blurb description, and my first book from this author.
I read this in less than 2 days, so yes I liked it! I found the story interesting. I was hooked from the first chapter and it kept my interest. I enjoyed the world building and felt like the overall storyline was a good concept. I liked the morally gray characters and the theme of angels and demons. I did feel like the romance was a really fast burn and it felt rushed. I was a little confused as to how exactly they fell for one another after just one private meeting, I feel like that storyline could have been expanded upon. That being said I did like Kit and Jet together and feel they complemented one another well. I wasn’t a huge fan of all the epilogues at the end. It just felt really rushed and choppy, with new characters thrown in and no backstories. Overall however, I would recommend this book and would read more from this author.

Huge thank you to M.R. Pritchard and BookSirens for the ARC! House of Devils and Angels is a dark romantasy that really nails a moody, surreal atmosphere—think grilled cheese and soda in the middle of Hell. I appreciated the third-person perspective and the creative concept of the Mansion, which felt like a refreshing departure from the usual genre tropes. The cast has a lot of potential, especially with Alastor’s witty, dangerous energy and the genuine compassion Jet and Kit show for others. It’s a solid closed-door option for readers who want high-tension "vibes" and a morally gray world without the story being driven by heavy spice.
However, while the foundation is imaginative, the execution often felt like it was only scratching the surface. I found the pacing uneven, with a slow-burn middle followed by a series of rushed epilogues that left me wanting more substance. A major sticking point for me was Jet returning as a "more powerful demon" with almost no explanation; without seeing the development between him and Alastor, that transition felt unfinished rather than earned. Between the inconsistent internal logic—like the "Starlight" nickname I'm ready to retire and the confusing shifts in Kit’s wing situation—I finished the book wishing the storytelling had been as developed as the concept. It’s a great "mood" read, but it didn't quite reach that level of obsession for me.

House of Devils and Angels is set in the veil of shadows universe where there is Haven, Hell and the earthen plane. The book is about a woman named Kit who is indebted to a place in Hell called the black mansion and must work as she is told to pay off her debt.
In this book we also have our main male character Jet. He is an angel sent from haven to investigate the black mansion in hell because there have been rumors of an angel sighted there doing things angels shouldn't be doing. He discovers kit and becomes determined to save her.
This book was super interesting as someone who has read all the other books in the veil of shadows universe. I really enjoyed it and am hungry for more. The inside look at the black mansion and the love story of characters' we have seen before. Their love story is cute. It feels really innocent when there is so much happening around them that is horrible. I really enjoy the working of Jet's mind. I really like that the end of the book was done in multiple parts showing sometimes how long it can actually take for the real happy ending.
I actually would've liked more of kits back story. We really only learn the tragic reason why she ended up where she was but nothing really before that. Same with Jet we don't know much about him before this assignment.

ARC Review: House of Angels and Demons by M.R. Pritchard
⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5)
This was my first introduction to M.R. Pritchard’s world, and while it’s part of a larger universe, I went into it as a standalone read.
The story started off strong and immediately pulled me in. The pacing in the beginning was quick, engaging, and easy to follow, which made it a fast read overall (I finished it pretty quickly at 254 pages). There were also some lighter “spice” elements that added a bit of intrigue without overwhelming the plot.
However, as the story progressed, it started to lose some of that initial momentum for me. The ending, in particular, felt a bit disjointed and overly extended. The multiple epilogues made it harder to stay emotionally connected, and instead of wrapping things up in a satisfying way, it felt like the story kept going without adding much impact.
Since this is part of a broader universe, it’s possible that some elements will resonate more with returning readers, but as someone new to the series, I found it harder to fully invest in the world and its stakes.
Overall, while I didn’t dislike the book—and I did finish it—it ended up being a somewhat forgettable read for me. That said, I can still see the appeal, especially for readers already familiar with the author’s universe or those looking for a quick, light fantasy read.
Thank you to the author for the ARC!

ARC Reader
Rating: 3.45/5, but ranking it 3 solid stars instead of ranking it up to 4 stars.
This was my first introduction to this universe, and as it was listed as (Not part of series), it could be read as a standalone. I thought I would be fine reading it and be perfectly fine. I mean, I have gone into the Rina Kent universe like this. I'm fairly good at getting into universes without being involved from the very beginning. However, in this, I was slightly confused about some of the concepts. The epligoues were a bit rough to get around because of how fast everything
The world and the characters were not bad at all. I actually enjoyed it a lot. I feel like it would be a little different for someone who has been involved in the world from either of the two entrance points (very beginning or starting at the beginning of the second gen).
Most things that are advised as a 'stand-alone' are usually something that can be read without much or even any knowledge of the world at all. It might lose some of the concepts, but it won't make the book feel so lost. This is the reason why I am rating it as 3.45. I like the concept of the demon and angel falling in love with each other. I feel like so much more could be done, and this book skipped around a lot.
Would I go and explore this universe more, though? Yes. I did enjoy the concept and the characters.

I just finished House of Devils and Angels by M. R. Pritchard, and it left me with a heavy, emotional feeling that will stay with me for days.
The story pulled me in with its dark, creepy setting that felt heavy and suffocating in the best way. The main characters quiet strength and the slow way their bond grows really touched me. I felt a deep mix of sadness, worry, and warm hope for them as they faced impossible situations. Their connection felt raw and real….the kind that makes your chest tight with both fear and tenderness. It reminded me how powerful small moments of trust can be in a cruel world.
I loved how the book focused on inner emotions and survival rather than rushing into anything flashy. It made me feel protective and moved in a way that lingered.
That said, the middle part felt a bit slow and repetitive for me, and the ending came on quickly, leaving me wanting a little more time to process everything.
Overall, it’s an emotional read with strong gothic vibes and heart. 3.5/5. If you enjoy dark fantasy romance that digs into feelings, hidden pain, and quiet devotion, this one will stay with you even with its flaws. Thank you for the opportunity! I’m glad I read it. 💜

“Where angels fall, monsters rise—and nothing is as it seems.”
“House of Devils and Angels” pulls readers into a gritty, shadow-soaked vision of hell—one teeming with hunger, deception, and shifting power. At the center of this dark realm lies the infamous Black Mansion, a seedy stronghold ruled by whichever sinister force is strong enough to claim it.
When whispers reach heaven of an angel dwelling within this nightmare, Jet is sent to investigate. Armed with charm, luck, and divine purpose, he descends into darkness in search of Kit—an angel who may not be what she appears. As truths unravel, the line between good and evil begins to blur in unsettling ways.
Pritchard crafts a multi-layered tale rich in atmosphere, delivering immersive world-building and a cast of morally complex characters. Themes of sacrifice, love, fear, and betrayal intertwine, creating a story that keeps you questioning loyalties until the very end. You’ll find yourself rooting fiercely for some characters—while hoping others meet their downfall.
This dark fantasy hits all the right notes with beloved tropes: tragic romance, morally gray protagonists, sinister overlords, and a descent into a beautifully dangerous underworld. It’s a quick yet twisted read, packed with intrigue and deception that will leave you guessing until the final pages.
Although I received this engaging and entertaining ARC for free, I can honestly say that “House of Devils and Angels” leaves just enough mystery lingering to make you crave more from this haunting world. I’ll definitely be watching for future installments.

Thank you so much for the ARC 🖤
I enjoyed being immersed in the dark, magical setting, with its world of demons, dangerous bargains, and shadowy magic. AND how the angels also had a darker edge, which added to the morally grey atmosphere.
Kit’s backstory was very interesting and heartbreaking, I enjoyed seeing how her past shaped who she becomes. Jet’s loyalty to both himself and to Kit was compelling, especially considering his role in the downfall of the manor.
I understand this was written as a standalone, but there were a few moments where I felt a bit confused, particularly with the characters who didn’t feel fully developed and a few time jumps that lacked context - I found myself wishing for a little more clarity in those areas.
However, the moody atmosphere really carries the story well. I still enjoyed following the characters relationship and the twists and turns of their journey. Overall, I enjoyed exploring this dark world and our characters getting their freedom (although it took decades which was confusing to me) ❤️
Really appreciated the opportunity to read and review 🤗

I loved the premise of this book. Angels, demons, taboo, forbidden love. The seven deadly sins reigned supreme in the Black Mansion where the high demon Alastor held court.
Kit is indebted to Alastor. She is an Angel in Hell. Jet is an angel sent by Babylon (heaven) to find and/or kill the Angel in Hell. Disguised as a demon he infiltrate their ranks. He unravels their hierarchies to find the Angel. Truth and lies run rampant, souls are bartered and traded, blood flows freely. It is easy to lose yourself and your purpose.
I rated this book a 3, but in truth I would have given it a 3.5. It was fantastic until the epilogues. In all honesty, it seemed like a lazy excuse to time jump. Really 5 epilogues with new characters and dialogues? It was hard to follow at times, and I was disappointed in the ending. It was all too neat for a story of traipsing the bowels of Hell. I really hope the author continues to write these stories because the characters are amazing. Maybe next time don't drag out 30+ years over 5 epilogues. It dragged down an otherwise fantastic story.

Dark fantasy romance
A good fantasy romance, with angels and demons, secret identities, forbidden love (he'll burn the world for her), oaths, rules, deception, survival and chemistry.
Jet, an angel, was sent on a mission to find an angel in the Black Mansion in Hell. His task is to find out if she's there under duress (and rescue her), or voluntarily (and ☠️her). He didn't expect to find Kit who is a demon disguised as an angel.
Kit's been in the Black Mansion for years and has learned to survive, though she's protected by Alastor, she knows it's only because she's useful and she's really trapped with no chance of escape. But being with Kit gives her hope and he's determined to not leave without her.
This is a standalone story but set in the "Veil of Shadows" universe and there are numerous epilogues all linking to different books in the series. It's duel POV and jumps back in time a few times, helping us to understand the characters better. This is the first I've read by MR Pritchard and I will definitely be looking to read more in this series.

I received this book as an ARC, and this is my review.
In Hell, at the Black Mansion, an Angel performs nightly. An angel, Jet, is tasked with finding out if the angel needs help, and he is disguised as a demon.
When he gets to the Black Mansion he meets Hell's Angel, Kit. Kit is drawn to Jet's goodness, and Jet is drawn to Kit's. Honestly, their "love story" is kinda lack luster, and it could have had more to it.
I did enjoy learning Kit's back story, but would have liked more. I would have liked more in general. I have not read any other books by this author, and that is why I was kinda lost during the many epilogues. I probably would have liked this more if I had read her other books.
I liked Kit's character, and Jet's but I would have liked to know more about him. I think some of the story needed further explanation, but that might just be because I am new to this world the author built.
My suggestion is to read other books in this series before picking this one up.

House of Devils and Angels
I really enjoyed elements of this story; from the resilience of the Kit and the protectiveness of the Jet. I enjoyed the description of hell and heaven and the contrasting elements and those small items that showed they were part of each other.
Jet is tasked with rescuing an angel in hell and is made to camouflage hims himself as a Demon. I enjoyed that even though outside he looked like a demon. he’s still held his core values even when in hell and even when it was dangerous that the other demons started noticing that he was different.
I also enjoyed when they started working together to undermine essence of hell and I enjoyed that they began to build their trust in nefarious ways!
What I found disconcerting was the flashbacks in the middle of the story. I perhaps would’ve liked as them at the beginning to get more background information on but then I also like that element of mystery.
The ending was heartfelt and suited the story exquisitely. Thank you for allowing me to read this ARC.

“If this oath destroys us… then we burn together.”
Yeah… that line alone sold me 👀🔥
This one leans hard into atmosphere and emotion. The setting—a house built on secrets, control, and survival—feels heavy in the best way, like there’s always something lurking just beneath the surface.
Kit’s story really stood out to me. Being trapped, forced into a role, and still holding onto that edge of defiance?? It makes everything she does feel more meaningful.
And Jet??
Walking into Hell with secrets of his own, pretending to belong there… that tension between who he is and what he’s hiding adds so much to the story.
What I liked most is how the relationship builds under pressure. Nothing about it feels safe or easy. Trust is risky, choices have consequences, and everything feels like it could fall apart at any moment 🖤
The concept of being bound together—needing each other to survive while not fully trusting one another—keeps the story engaging the whole way through.
It’s dark, emotional, and layered with just enough tension to keep you invested.

*ARC - advanced reader copy review. Thank you to the author and BookSirens for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!*
Unfortunately for me I felt this book was a hard standalone. Without reading the other books pertaining to this world I felt very confused. The pace was so quick I was constantly left rereading and questioning what was happening.
I thoroughly enjoyed the concept, characters, and the world itself but I just felt very lost. I think reading more of this universe and better understanding the characters would have made this a lot more of an enjoyable read.
I felt like the ending was very rushed as well, and the multiple epilogs spanning over years were confusing. It was just snippets of a story that could have definitely been better built on.
Overall, I think the story is written well, the concept, characters and universe are interesting and intriguing, but the book should probably not be listed as a standalone as it is confusing and hard to follow without the background knowledge of this world and developments from the start.

Overall, I think the story is written well, the concept, characters and universe are interesting and intriguing, but the book should probably not be listed as a standalone as it is confusing and hard to follow without the background knowledge of this world and developments from the start.

This one sits in the dark romantasy category, but don’t go into it expecting heavy spice (or any spice). It’s very much a closed-door romance, which actually makes it a great option for readers who enjoy darker fantasy vibes without smut being the driving force of the story.
The character development was really well done, and the world-building was immersive and easy to get pulled into. The author created a setting that felt rich and layered, which kept me curious about what would happen next.
That said, I finished the book feeling like something was missing, though I can’t quite put my finger on what it was. It had all the right elements (interesting characters, a strong world, darker themes) but it never fully hit that obsessed, can’t-put-it-down level for me. Still, if you enjoy darker romantasy with minimal spice and solid world-building, this one is definitely worth picking up.
Thank you so much to BookSirens for allowing me to be on the ARC Team for this book!

This is a standalone from an existing large series. I have not read any of the other books in the series.
I read a lot of demon stuff, and I was excited to receive this ARC. Unfortunately it just felt flat to me.
The plot was OK, send an angel disguised as a demon to investigate/possibly retrieve an angel stuck in Hell. All the makings of a cool adventure. It just slogged along instead of being engrossing.
Yes, it was moody and dark. Most of the characters were described nicely.
The story was unclear on some of the side characters. They are randomly announced, and then all of the sudden, they are BFFs with the MC? Did I miss some chapters?
There's a side story about rescuing trapped girls that felt disjointed. I felt like maybe it was a larger part of one of the other books. The excessive amount of epilogues was annoying and weird, they seemed to not belong to this book at all.

Diving into House of Devils and Angels felt like stepping into a room where the shadows were alive, watching, whispering secrets I wasn’t sure I wanted to know. M. R. Pritchard didn’t just tell a story—she made me feel it. I could sense the tension crawling along my skin, the weight of the characters’ choices pressing in, blurring the line between right and wrong, light and darkness.
There were moments that left me breathless, trapped in the same moral maze as the characters. I found myself both horrified and strangely fascinated, unable to look away as the story drew me deeper into its twisted, seductive grip. A few plot threads left me wanting more clarity, but the raw intensity and the emotional depth more than compensated.
This is the kind of book that lingers with you, that seeps into your thoughts and refuses to let go. Reading it was like staring into a mirror of my own darker curiosities—and I loved every unsettling second.

This was my first introduction into the Veil of Shadows world, and wow! What incredible world building! I really loved how incredibly immersive this book was to get into, it is such a fascinating society to learn about. This is definitely dark fantasy, although with little actual spice. Great for those who like the spooky and morally grey vibes without the explicit detail.
I know this is a much bigger world then just this book, so a lot of the epilogue didn't have much meaning to me, but knowing its all connected is really neat. I really liked the characters - my only complaint was Kit, as I felt like we didn't get much of an explanation as to why she seemed to be the only one in hell who had morals.
I think my favourite character relationship had to be between Kit and Alastor. It was so completely toxic, and really well written.

First, can I say I absolutely love how Meredith pulls everything together…seamlessly!!
Treachery is everywhere, across multiple planes!
The FMC, Kit, has such a tragic beginning & of course Alastor had to be there to cash in on it.
The MMC, Jet, an angel with no ties but bound to Babylon, is sent undercover to find out if the rumors are true, is there truly is an Angel operating within Hell. Then either help them escape or kill them if they are there willingly.
Their paths cross & choices are made in this fast paced story from the Black Mansion!! If you’ve read The Veil of Shadows series or the Second Generation series I think you would definitely enjoy the House of Devils and Angels (plus all the little easter eggs).
But, I’d say you could still read it as a standalone and love Kit & Jet’s story 🖤

This book is set in theveil of shadows world before Sparrow & Meg, it is another interconnected standalone dark fantasy romance between Kit & Jet . Their relationship spans from before Sparrow & Meg throughout their series and even into the next generation. Kit has had to survive in the back mansion under the ‘protection’ of Alastor from a very young age. She’s had to learn the games & rules of the system in the black mansion while having to do things and take in information, she thinks this is where her life will be as she is indebted to Alastor. Jet is sent from Babylon to investigate the rumours of an angel in the black mansion, if she’s there of her own free will or not. If she’s is then he is to kill her.
But all is not what it seems, can kit trust her enough to be able to free herself? Can Jet keep his focus and not lose himself in the black mansion?
A forbidden romance between angel and demon with forced proximity and a slow burn what more could you want :)

I wanted SO badly to love this book, and I just didn’t. It was incredibly conflicting because the characters were developed perfectly, the set scene/universe was delicious while grabbing you to pull you in to read more, the history and plot was solid, but the execution was poor. The character’s actions were sudden and they didn’t always align with the previous scene. The best way I can describe it… it was spacey. As if going to the restroom in the middle of the movie, only to come back and have to piece things together because no one is there to fill you in on what you missed.
There were many parts that I didn’t understand what was going on for pages long, following along with the characters unsure of how/why we got there, until I was already directly on top of the conflict. I understood the plot, we are moving from “A” to get to “B”, but the whole way to “B” was confusing.
