Lauren Michaels is a homicide detective on the run. Thanks to Mary Higgins, a family friend with connections with the Russian mob, she finds a way to save her as she lies helpless in a hospital bed recovering from gunshot wounds. Lauren lands in the town of Pearl, and smack in the middle of paradise. But she can’t let her guard down despite the appealing aspects of this town and all it has to offer. Including Galvin, Gus, Harper, Orin, and Mace. Five best friends, retired Navy Seals, and the only men to make her want the things she thought she could live without. Like love, companionship, and an equality most men failed at. But her badge of honor has turned into her mark of death. The 10th Street gang seeks revenge, and they’ll stop at nothing to find Lauren and make her suffer.
People seem to be more interested in my name than where I get my ideas for my stories from. So I might as well share the story behind my name with all my readers.
My momma was born and raised in New Orleans. At the age of twenty, she met and fell in love with an Irishman named Patrick Riley Dwyer. Needless to say, the family was a bit taken aback by this as they hoped she would marry a family friend. It was a modern day arranged marriage kind of thing and my momma downright refused.
Being that my momma’s families were descendents of the original English speaking southerners, they wanted the family blood line to stay pure. They were wealthy and my father’s family was poor.
Despite attempts by my grandpapa to make Patrick leave and destroy the love between them, my parents married. They recently celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary.
I am one of six children born to Patrick and Lynn Dwyer. I am a combination of both Irish and a true southern belle. With a name like Dixie Lynn Dwyer it’s no wonder why people are curious about my name.
Just as my parents had a love story of their own, I grew up intrigued by the lifestyles of others. My imagination as well as my need to stray from the straight and narrow made me into the woman I am today.
You know, I have read this series from the beginning, and I am a BIG fan of Dixie Lynn Dwyer's. I also read a lot, and read a lot of series, and not all of the books are equally good in any of them.
That being said, I just didn't really like this one much, and 3 stars is probably over-rating it for me, but I am a Dixie Lynn fan girl, so I want to say my peace about this while not hurting ratings (not that one review really does that much).
Three things really griped me about this book...
1. The bad grammar!!! It's not 'him and the guys went/did/ate/whatever' or 'her and Bob went/did/had/ate/whatever'!!! I don't have a problem if this is inside of a conversation and the speaker just has bad grammar... lots of people (unfortunately) do and that is characterization. But this was rampant throughout the book, outside of quotes (in descriptive text) and I don't recall it in previous books. Obviously no one proof-read this book.
2. The whole plot scenario was so convoluted, over so many years, that it was not only difficult to keep up with all the players and gangs, but I wondered how the main villain was so inept, for so long, yet had built up so much power. Really? Who spends 13 years and can't get some forged papers done up?
3. Five guys is two too many, IMHO. Three is about the most I like before there just isn't good character development for them all, or much individual interaction between the h and the Hs, and that really happened here.
Also, it seemed like it took forever for this one to migrate from Siren Bookstrand's web site to sale on Amazon for my Kindle. I know that Siren will email a book to your Kindle (I have lots of their books), but it shows up as a .doc, and I just don't like that, so I wait, wait, wait for it to be listed on Amazon, checking every few days... and this one took like 2 months!
Better than usual Siren book cover, though (better looking people on it).
I like bad ass heroine but the romance and heroes came too long for me to enjoy or even jump into it. Maybe a longer story would have helped. After a while, I just stopped as I was no longer interested. I think the main reason is that the plot overpowered everything else and I did not find the balance I like in sex/romance/plot.
Lauren is an independent woman who has no problems taking care of business be that family or job. She got an early start by protecting her sisters although she was too late to protect her parents. She took a job with the police force and forged a career that has led to her going into hiding from the tenth street gang. Galvin and his seal team has pledged to keep her safe but will it be enough when all of the evidence comes to light.
Fiery cop/detective Lauren has become the target of drug lords. She was in the middle of a set up and killed their leader and 8 others. They want revenge. She herself was shot and Mary is taking care of her in Pearl. Wow, what a wild ride we have here. Twists and turns, lots of action, an interesting suspenseful story, and deep thought filled characters. Harper, Galvin, Gus, Orin, and Mace are ex Navy Seals with their big secure home, and a security business, who can protect her from the hit that's on her head. Harper finds her first in the woods jogging, and he startled her, she draws her Glock, and the attraction is beginning. They don't know the how or why of her story, but they are attracted to her. When they hear her tale, they are more than interested in protecting her, and keeping her. This ménage romance is a thrill ride! They don't have sex until 80% into the story. Each hot man is different from the next, but each can give her what she needs. Great guys, a strong woman, and interest make this a great tale. ENJOY !!!
Lauren Michaels prides herself with her job as a homicide detective. Lauren has taken the role as older sister to heart after losing their parents. She works hard and provides whatever she can so her sisters can achieve their dreams. Lauren never expected to be involved in a situation that has her hiding in the town of Pearl.
Lauren needs to stay alert until she can see her sisters safely. Lauren never expected to find herself involved with five men.
Harper knows two things about Lauren the moment he meets her. She is hiding something and she is his one. With his best friends Orin, Galvin, Gus, and Mace close by Harper convinces them to meet her. Everyone is on board with making Lauren theirs, but they want the truth about what she is hiding from and how to convince a woman that she will be around long enough to explore what is between them.
This was a bit darker than Dixie Lynn Dwyer's normal books. I liked it though, it was refreshingly new. I hope she writes some books about the mafia characters who are introduced in the books.
I actually like this author and her other books in this series, but this one was really a miss for me. The begining was too long for the actual size of the book, there were so many different gangsters, so many different agendas, it got confusing and there was no place left for the romance. 2 sex scenes in a book with five guys, really? The guys... I hate them really. They were such chauvinistic pigs. Look at the cover... What do you see? A bad ass heroine with 5 eye candies as a harem, right? Well, they have seen it too, and they are not happy about it. They keep trying to turn her into a meek doormat throughout the book. She has a hit on her. Why would you try to take her only weapon? Oh, of course, they are the only ones who protect and use a weapon since they are the only ones with balls, right? They were like stupid machos trying to prove that they are man enough. Well, in the end she needed to use that weapon, and she didn't even say I told you so. I am heartbroken about that.
I was pretty surprised with this addiction to the Pearl series because it wasn't as sex heavy as some of the other books I've read for Mrs. Dwyer, but in a good way. The characters were maybe a little simple and Lauren certainly gave herself over to her men almost a little too quickly for it to be realistic for a a strong willed woman who comes from a job where she will not and can not take any **** from anyone, but it's a simple romance story so I can accept the flippant nature of the heroine. The book believes what it promised, a little smutty read with a fairly rounded plot to help carry it and that's what I wanted to read.
So if you are looking for what we Dane's call 'Bang novella' (Literally translated from 'knald roman' which is simply any quick read romance novella ever written) this I would say give this book a read. you'll certainly enough it.
Another great addition to The Town of the Pearl. Lauren has seen her fair share of violence. Starting when she was a young girl. With both her parents gone she has decided to help others/protect them including her sisters. This is why she becomes a cop. While on a mission something goes wrong and she now has a target on her back. She is sent to the town of Pearl to stay hidden, where she meets ex-Navy Seals Galvin, Gus, Harper, Orin, and Mace. All five men have their own issues but after meeting Lauren they all have one goal to keep Lauren safe and make her theirs. This story has a strong Heroine along with some very Dominating men, along with an amazing town that backs each person up. A few twist in the story and wow you will love it!
Same premise as this author's other stories. Short or petite stacked hotie who is on the run from a man or men who want to kill her ends up in Pearl. Only this time the female lead is a New York cop. Who can also kick ass. Then in comes five hot ex navy seals yummy. Who are badasses. They are all alpha type of men. Who instantly fall in lust and love with her. That's it.
Lauren has had a tough life with killing the men who broke in when she was twelve to save her sisters, and working as a cop to make money, to moving to Pearl to avoid being killed by a hitman - to meeting Harper, to gaining the guardianship of the rest of his team, Calvin, Gus, Mace, and Orin - can they save her and bring the sisters back together.
