To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this book, but as I wanted to try something out of my comfort zone, I tried it out and kept an open mind as I was reading the book. I’m happy to say I had an enjoyable reading experience! It was definitely nothing like I expected, and I have to admit, this is one of the most unusual books I’ve ever read, but overall it was an interesting read.

Very Brief Summary:

Told from the perspective of three characters; Deborah Lane, Luke Fisher and Frank Matthews, Tales of the 23rd Precinct follows these characters as they roam the streets of Brooklyn after street thugs and criminals. We learn about their stories, and are taken on an interesting ride as we do so.

My Review

The plot was pretty good! It was relatively interesting, and was a more unusual storyline than my normal books, however I warmed up to it quite quickly. There were also several cliffhangers (especially where the POV of one character ended and the next POV started) which made the book more gripping. Not to mention the ending! All in all, it was quite good.

As for the characters, they were also well-written. There were several main characters, and we got to see different sides of them in a short period of time (or so it seemed). I read from the POV of one of the characters, got an idea of the other characters, but then when it switched to another character’s POV, I got a whole different side of the story, and that was interesting. One little thing however was that I found it hard to keep track of some of the characters; a few times I got confused between them. This was a minor issue and did not take away from my overall reading experience.

Lastly, the writing style. The writing style was enjoyable, and wasn’t out of place, broken, etc. The writing style suited the story, and allowed us to smoothly get a look inside the characters’ head.

Overall…

Tales of the 23rd Precinct was an interesting read. I had an enjoyable reading experience, and while it wasn’t keeping me on the edge all the time, it kept me interested. The plot was good, the characters were intriguing, and there was a smooth, consistent writing style. Do I recommend it? If you enjoy a bit of cop drama kind of stuff, I do. If you mostly prefer paranormal, dystopia, contemporary, etc. I wouldn’t particularly say go for it, however if you think you’d be interested in this, go ahead. This is a Goodreads First Read book that I recently received in the mail. Gotta love free books.

Kevin 11 (aka Kevin Anglade) has given us tales of the 23rd Precinct in Brooklyn. I got this book as goodreads giveaway. It was great to receive this in a very short time, even though it was sent from abroad. The books is a novel full of surprises and suspense, which is indeed great for a detective one. The story rotates around the crime and efforts to curb it in the city of New York. The book ends with killings, destroyed relationships and in the wait for the next part. Will love to read other parts soon too.

An interesting venture from an independent publisher, this gritty collection of short stories reads like a graphic novel. The stories are written straight from the streets of Brooklyn, and filled with hard-boiled detectives and dirty street thugs, and are compelling to read. From start to finish, it arrested my attention!

This book was split into three separate parts, each focusing around a different character and case within the precinct. This was a good idea, and, while I did enjoy the characters portrayal, it was too short. It was face paced in the bad way, where there was too little suspense. This combined with the many punctuation errors made reading it a tad less en Tales of the 23rd Precinct by Kevin Eleven was a quick and interesting read. My favourite character portrayal out of the three characters was that of Frank Matthews. While the other two characters were obvious ‘good guys’, he was more villainous and added a ‘Dexter-esque’ quality to the book. He was an interesting character, and it was easy to tell the author enjoyed writing his part more as I feel like there was a higher attention to detail in this part of the book, particularly to portrayal of Frank Matthews attitude and idiosyncrasies. Well, I think the author enjoyed it more, but that might just have been paying attention to the section more.

Another aspect of the book I enjoyed was the actual cases themselves. They were all interesting – even though I still believe they were too fast paced to have any suspense. The cases helped defined what sort of personality each character has too, especially Detective Deborah Lane, who was probably my second favourite character in the book. She almost added an element of contrast to the book, as the first story in the book focused on her, and she is fundamentally good character and is very dedicated to her work. Frank Matthews’ story ended the book, and he was pretty much the opposite. It’s small things like this that I really like.

Overall this certainly wasn’t a bad read, and, while it does have faults, the well-written characters overshadow this issues. I will definitely be reading the sequel. ...more

I liked the idea of this book. I even liked how the stories built on one another and the end tied all the stories together. I had trouble with some of the writing. Some of the characterizations could have been a little more detailed so that the reader can know the characters more and thus care what happens to them. Also, dialog often came off as a bit stiff and didn't have a natural flow to it.
