He was sent to protect her until he could eliminate her. Then she became the one person he couldn’t destroy.

Aria Connors thought losing her fiancé was the worst thing she would ever survive. Then come the gifts. The warnings. The feeling that someone is watching her while she sleeps. Until a masked stranger starts haunting the edges of her life—first as a presence in the shadows, then as a faceless voice, then as the man who seems to understand the most broken parts of her. The deeper Aria falls, the harder it becomes to tell danger from desire.

Ren is the Triads’ most feared weapon—a silent assassin known as the god of death. He was given one job: keep Aria alive until a key is recovered…then kill her. But Ren has spent his life obeying orders without hesitation. Aria was supposed to be a job. A problem. A means to an end. Instead, she gets under his skin, into his blood, and past every wall he’s ever built.

Now enemies are closing in, the secrets buried in Aria’s past are beginning to unravel, and the empire Ren serves will destroy them both before it lets them walk away. As betrayal, obsession, and desire collide, Ren will have to choose between the world that made him a monster…or the woman who makes him want to be a man.

Because in a world ruled by death, falling in love may be the most dangerous betrayal of all.

For fans of Peaky Blinders grit, Phantom of the Opera obsession, and Ocean’s Eleven schemes—with angst, spice, and sharp twists.

Guarded in Darkness is the second book in Victoria Lum's Anti-Hero Syndicate series and it plunges readers straight back into the dark, dangerous world that was established in the first book. Set one year after the previous book's events, this one delivers a perfect blend of suspense, emotional depth, romance, and intrigue.

For me, Ren is one of the series' most fascinating characters. Operating from the shadows for the Syndicate, he is fiercely loyal to the few people he allows into his life. His devotion to his sister is unwavering, and her health and safety remain his driving force. While Ren has always appeared controlled and detached, Victoria expertly peels back his layers, revealing a man burdened by guilt, duty, and a growing desire for something, and someone, he believes he doesn't deserve.

Aria is still struggling under the weight of the devastating loss she experienced in book one. Consumed by grief and uncertainty, she is moving through life without truly living it. Her emotional journey is compelling as she grapples with the guilt of moving forward and the longing to feel seen and understood. The comfort she finds in her mysterious masked stranger creates an intriguing dynamic that adds both tension and vulnerability to the story.

One of the book's greatest strengths is Victoria's ability to balance multiple plotlines without sacrificing any of the pacing or the character development. While Aria's quandary remains at the forefront, the larger mysteries surrounding the Association continue to unfold. At the same time, Ren's concerns for his sister and his complicated ties outside of the Syndicate add further layers to an already compelling narrative.

The suspense steadily increases as Aria begins receiving unexpected gifts from someone unknown, and late-night visits from her masked protector. The emotional conflict intensifies as her connection to both the masked stranger and Ren deepens. Meanwhile, Ren finds himself torn between his mission, his loyalty to his sister, and the feelings he can no longer ignore. His internal struggle is one of the book's most powerful elements, particularly as he wrestles with his fear of being truly known and his belief that he is unworthy of love.

As secrets begin to unravel and long-hidden truths come to light, the tension really escalates. Aria is forced to confront difficult realities and make choices that will undoubtedly have lasting consequences. The revelations hit hard, challenging both the characters and the reader's expectations.

Victoria has crafted a captivating second book filled with emotional complexity, high stakes, and compelling character growth. Guarded in Darkness is an engaging and addictive addition to the Anti-Hero Syndicate series that will leave readers eager for the next instalment. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy intense romance, morally grey heroes, and high-stakes suspense.

I always knew I was going to love Elias's story (Sworn In Deceit) from the all snippets from his cameos in The Orchid series but I was not anticipating becoming obsessed with Ren instead!! Ren came in like a force to be reconned with and stays with you whether you want him to or not. Spoiler: I want him to!! 😏

Ren: the mute assassin, Si Shen; God of Death, heartless. Ren has a duty to the Kong's, complete his marks and they'll help him with his one wish. He is great at his job, he's heartless, doesn't speak to anyone and wants to believe that whoever the Kong's deem as a mark are bad people. But after a near death experience and a new heart, things aren't as black and white as they once were. His replacement heart seems to be beating to a different drum especially around a particular nurse with a no fear gene. Things begin to get complicated when the Kong's assign Si Shen with a new mark, one that could end one life but save another. Can Ren save them both or is he forever doomed to too be the God of Death and nothing more?

Aria: ER nurse, lover of horror and thrill seeker. After the loss of her fiancé, the man she was to marry was taken from her in the very hospital where they worked to save lives. With the grief slowly stripping away at the woman she was before, she feels lost. Looking for ways to cope, sometimes dangerous ways. Within these dangers, she somehow never feels alone with a shadow following her everywhere. Is this shadow there to keep her safe or to pose an even bigger threat to her life? Soon strange things seem to happen around her: "gifts" left in her ER, strangers asking her things she knows nothing about but also a man in a mask. What do these "gifts" mean, what do these strangers want with her and why does she feel drawn to this man in a mask? Will she find the answers before it's too late or will her love for danger catch up with her?

Ren and Aria's story is about finding yourself, finding a reason to continue and finding the Bonnie to your Clyde (but with an HEA 😉). Sometimes you just got to let your gloom shine and just be yourself. We are perfect just the way were are!

“Every god has a weakness, even Si Shen.
And perhaps this is mine.
Her.”

I discovered Victoria Lum’s books this year and safe to say i’ve found myself a new favourite author and she’s found herself a new fan. I fear this series if it keeps on going like this might become my top 3 series ever.

I was very intrigued by Ren in the previous book in series and i thought i had him figured out but i was surprised. He is a lot more complex than i thought him to be which was a positive sign. Ren was referred to as “God of Death” and is a very trustable mute assassin who is perfect in his job which is intriguing in itself but things take a turn when he receives a replacement heart which starts to beat for someone else and there comes a time where he has to make difficult choices.

“This man, who never got to have anything because his life wasn’t his…Until me.
Until he stole those moments for himself.”

Aria is the kind of heroine i love to read out. She’s grieving the loss of her fiancé and decides to start living again. Her strength was one thing which stood out to me and the love she had for everyone around her.

Their dynamic was one of my favourite to read! The chemistry between the two was INSANE and there were so many scenes where i legit held my breath. I love how this book offered much more than romance- it had action, mystery and anything one could possibly ask for!!

Read if you like:
BODYGUARD/TARGET
MASKED MUTE ASSASSIN
STALKER/PROTECTOR
MORALLY GRAY MEN
LOVER IN THE DARK
OBSESSED HERO
SECRET SOCIETY
MAFIA/ORGANIZED CRIME
DORMA/SOMNO PLAY
TOUCH HER AND REGRET IT

Overall, this is hands down going as one of my top reads of the year (just like the first one in the series is) and i genuinely cant wait for the next book in series cause the crumbs we got of that couple have me dying!!! I just know its going to be another hit! i have really high hopes for the whole series as a whole and i trust victoria to deliver!

thankyou to the author agency for the arc, im so grateful to have had a chance to read it early!

A year after the death of her fiancé in a hospital shooting, Aria is still trying to find her footing. Unable to confide in her closest friends, she has turned to an anonymous app, where she’s able to share her darkest thoughts. As the manifestation of those thoughts begins showing up in her ER, with notes listing their offenses and injuries, she wonders whether the man she’s struck up a friendship is the same one enacting justice on behalf of her patients. When her life is threatened by mysterious assailants, her friends gather around her, offering protection. By day she has a masked bodyguard who doesn’t speak, but at night, in the dark, a mysterious man who won’t let her see his face, but becomes everything she didn’t know she needed.

As one of the Triad’s top assassins, Ren is used to working in the shadows. For the past year he’s been infatuated with Aria, but kept his distance out of guilt and believing that she deserves so much better than him. When he receives an order to retrieve something from her and then eliminate her, he is torn between his duty to his organization and his heart, but remains determined to keep her safe no matter the cost.

I received an early copy of this book from the author and I am obsessed! I knew based on the events in Sworn in Deceit that Ren and Aria’s journey wouldn’t be an easy one, but I never anticipated how their story would play out. Aria had such a clear vision of what her life should have been, mostly dicated by her former fiancé, and since his death she’s had a hard time reconciling who she was with him with how she feels inside. Afraid of letting anyone get too close, her connection with her stranger in the dark gives her what she needs without having to bring anything into the over analytical light of day. But in this darkness, her connection to Ren grows stronger, even before she knows his identity, and he falls in love with all facets of her. The twists and turns that @Authorvictorialum throws at us will keep any reader on their toes, and only make the ending even sweeter.

Morally grey obsession, scorching chemistry, and twists that kept me guessing.

Aria is an ER nurse still carrying the weight of losing her fiancé in a shootout a year ago. Every shift is a reminder of their story - his time as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon, the lives they saved together, and his horrific death. Desperate to start living again, she begins taking risks, chasing the adrenaline she's been missing, and confiding in an anonymous texting friend. Her choices feel bold but believable for someone trying to navigate grief, especially as threats against her life emerge and she begins to question whether her fiancé was really the man she thought he was.

Ren was the standout. A mute assassin with many identities - the God of Death for the Kongs, an operative for the Antihero Syndicate, a bodyguard, a devoted brother - he's the definition of morally grey. His quiet obsession with Aria began while protecting Lana, and watching him struggle between his growing feelings, his duty, and his family's safety made him such a compelling character. He's ruthless when he needs to be, but vulnerable beneath the mask.

Their relationship is layered, complicated, and built on secrets hiding in both the light and the darkness. Literally. The tension between them is undeniable. While there aren't a large number of spicy scenes, every one of them is incredibly hot. These scenes explore unique kinks like dorma/somno and knife play.

The action never lets up. Between break-ins, attacks, bounties, blackmail, an organ trafficking ring, and the ongoing fight against The Association, there's always something happening. The pacing kept me hooked, and the world continues to expand in exciting ways, filled with dangerous men willing to do whatever it takes to protect the women they love.

Overall, Guarded in Darkness is another gripping installment that blends romance, suspense, and morally grey chaos. I can't wait for book three later this year - and I'm crossing my fingers for a Pawn and Bishop story because those two would be explosive…

Victoria Lum never disappoints? And I swear the Antihero Syndicate series is just getting better! There’s nothing a love more than a “heartless” assassin going soft and finally finding love only for their lover to be their next target. Damn becuase that’s forbidden taken to the next level, and Victoria Lum takes freaking everything to the next level. She’s an incredibly talented author managing to juggle multiple plot lines without overcrowding and rushing, making sure each plot twist has maximum impact. I admit the “final reveal” plot twist was something I expected from the start, but it was still impactful in the way it affected the story at its core. The plot was amazing but she never skimps on the romance and character development. I love a mortally grey vigilante mmc who claims he doesn’t have a heart but ironically does everything out of love (please read it and you’ll see what I mean). He’s a tragically broken man behind his cold assassin facade and has been pining forever for Aria. His “multiple personas” had me in a chokehold because he was hot in the dark of night and in the daylight (and I also love men who wear masks and only speak to their girl). As a Chinese girl myself, having a Chinese mmc really spoke to me and I loved the representation. I also selfishly wish someone would call me gongzhu (princess) like Ren does Aria. He would literally murder the entire world for her but is also a respectful as hell dark romance mmc, who gives her space when she asks and lets her call all the shots (which is better than 90% of dark romance mmcs). Aria goes through a lot during this book as well, and I loved most how she broke free of self inflicted chains and balanced her “saving people” needs with her dark ones. This book was a masterpiece, and it may look long but I promise it flew by so quickly I can’t wait to read the bonus epilogue. There’s also a hint for the next story that I’m super excited about! I give this a 5/5

Holy Smokes! No questions about it!…5 STARS! I stayed up way too late to finish this one! I COULD NOT put it down! The suspense and TWISTS had me continuously saying“just one more chapter”.

A year after the death of her fiancé, Aria is trying to move on with her life without continuously feeling guilt for surviving. When a bounty is placed on her head by the Triad because they believe she has the key they are desperate for, her life gets turned upside down by danger, secrets, and betrayal. But Aria is strong, fierce, and determined. She just needs a little help along the way believing in herself and realizing that it is ok to move on.

To say I'm OBSESSED with Ren would be an understatement! He is an assassin with a heart of gold under all the darkness and destruction. He falls SO hard for Aria and is determined to do anything to make her life a little bit brighter, all while trying to protect her from the very people who tasked him with finding the key and then eliminating her.

Guarded in Darkness is book two in the Antihero Syndicate series by Victoria Lum. Book one Sworn in Deceit is another 5 star read and it is highly recommended to start there if you haven't already read it!

I will definitely be counting down the days until Taken in Seduction (Sofia and Tristan's story) is released!

ARC Review of Guarded in Darkness by Victoria Lum

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶🌶🌶

Victoria Lum...you completely got me with this one!

First, I have to mention the classified file at the beginning. With so many characters, secrets, and moving pieces in the AntiHero Syndicate world, it was such a thoughtful addition and made keeping track of everything so much easier.

I honestly wasn't expecting Ren to become one of my favorite book boyfriends, but he absolutely stole my heart. A masked, mute, stalker assassin? Umm...where do I sign up?! 😂

From the very first chapter, Ren and Aria's story had me completely hooked. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, Victoria threw in another twist that had me questioning everything. The suspense never let up, and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.

This book had the perfect balance of suspense, danger, witty banter, romance, and heart. Aria's journey was incredibly emotional, and my heart broke for everything she'd endured. Watching Ren stand beside her, believe in her when she couldn't believe in herself, and help her find her strength again made their relationship feel authentic, powerful, and so well deserved.

Im beyond excited for Sofia's book!!!! If the glimpses we've seen of her are any indication, she's about to unleash absolute chaos, and I cannot wait. The AntiHero Syndicate series just keeps getting better with every book, and I'm already counting down until Victoria Lum takes us on the next unforgettable ride.

What To Expect:
Bodyguard/Target
Stalker/Protector
Obsessed Hero
Secret Society
Mafia/Organized Crime
Morally Gray Men
Found Family
Touch Her and Regret It
Secret Identities

REN!!
Thank you to Victoria for a chance to review and guide this early!

I knew I was looking forward to Ren's book when we met him in the previous Antihero Syndicate book but, being the first real 'venture' outside of the connected series I'm used to, I was wondering if I would love him as much. And the answer is YES.
What I loved about this: Ren is an assassin, yes, so there's some inherent danger, intrigue, darkness about him. But he's also deeply conflicted, driven by love for his family, and a softy at heart. Aria, on the other side, is the heads to his tails. She's a nurse and therefore a savior, healing, light, etc, but she's also driven by some truly dark characteristics, anger, resentment, and pain. They are truly two sides of the same coin and I LOVE the duality that Lum was able to bring out in them.
This duality really shines throughout the story, as Ren deals with his guilt over the death of Aria's fiancée, his attraction to her, his working as an assassin, and his loyalty to the Syndicate. The interactions him and Aria have in the dark are HOT and spicy but really balanced with the plot. Lum is one of the few authors I can get behind when the language gets intense and the scenes get a bit dark because of how well she makes it believable in the overall context of the story. Aria, on the other hand, is trying to find herself...both the light and dark aspects of her...as she builds herself up after tragedy.
The pacing of this is sublime...there's action around every corner but none of it ever feels performative. While I LOVED the Orchid series...I think this series is where Lum has finally found her groove, and I cannot wait to see the rest of this anti-heroes on the page.

She was the job. Then she became his obsession.

I am feral for this book.

Ren is the Triads’ most feared weapon — masked, mute, and called the god of death for a reason. His mission: guard Aria Connors until a key is recovered... then eliminate her. Simple.

Except Aria was never supposed to get under his skin. Into his blood. Past every wall he’s ever built.

This is dark romance with Peaky Blinders grit, Phantom of the Opera obsession, and Ocean’s Eleven heist energy. Bodyguard/target meets stalker/protector meets lover in the dark. The tension is a knife to the throat. The angst is lethal.

What I loved:

Ren: Silent, lethal, morally grey, and completely unraveling for her. A masked mute assassin who falls first, falls harder, and would burn his empire for her.

Aria: Haunted and grieving, but stronger than she knows. She doesn’t just survive him — she makes a monster want to be a man.

The Vibes: Secret society, mafia, somno play, found family, heist crew chaos, and twists that cut deep.

The Quote: “In a world ruled by death, falling in love may be the most dangerous betrayal of all.”

It’s dark, unhinged, and devastatingly romantic. The touch her and regret it energy? Unholy.

Tropes: Bodyguard/Target • Masked Mute Assassin • Stalker/Protector • Obsessed Hero • Secret Society • Mafia • Morally Grey Men • Found Family • Heist Crew Energy

Spice: 4/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

CW: Please check author warnings. Dark themes, violence, dubious consent elements.

It's so great to be back in the syndicate with these characters. Another fantastic read that had my heart pounding and melting at the same time. The action and suspense, following plot twists left and right, totally captivated me to devour this story. I absolutely loved every page of this read! Ever since the first book in the Anti Hero Syndicate I was craving more. This story delivered and didn't disappoint!
Ren, our MMC, assassin to the Triads. The quiet, dark and dangerous. Death himself, trained to eliminate on order is tasked to terminate our FMC Aria. A nurse who's quietly grieving the death of her former partner. Apparently has the key that the Triads acquire to see her as a threat.
The heart that now beats in Ren's chest is about to unravel us all in this fast paced, action packed page turner of secrets, blood shed and a plot twist I didn't see coming.
Loved the banter within the characters in the syndicate. Definitely a lot of mischievous, bickering humor but a lot of loyalty too.
Can't wait to see more from these characters in this series. Tristan and Hellcat is going to be one hell of a rollercoaster and a wild ride!

This is book two of the Antihero Syndicate Series! You get to follow Aria and Ren! Aria is navigating her new life after losing her fiancée. Ren is the “God of Death” and Aria is the one thing he didn’t see coming.

She has done it AGAIN! This series just keeps getting better and better!! Ren and Aria's story just got added to my top reads list for the year. The connection between these two. This man SEES her and that in itself made me give this all the stars I can give. One thing Victoria is so good at is keeping you on your toes because there will alway be a twist you just aren't sure what it will be until it happens. I'm not sure if I devoured this book or if it devoured me lol I could not put it down. Ren in book one was such a mystery and getting such a deeper look into him, I think I'm in love with him lol I don't want to give too much away but there were so many moments between Ren and Aria that made me melt, they were HOT and I will be thinking of this book for a long while.

P.S: I need book three because it being that couple, I already know the intensity is going to be off the charts. This series has officially become one of my all time favorites and it isn't even fully out yet.

The suspense kept me hooked the entire time. I was constantly trying to piece everything together, but the twists still managed to surprise me. The balance between romance, mystery, and emotional depth was done so well that I never wanted to put the book down.

What really made this story unforgettable was Ren's unwavering devotion. He knew revealing the truth could cost him everything, yet he still chose to love Aria wholeheartedly. His willingness to accept whatever she was willing to give him—even if it wasn't forever—made him one of the most selfless and swoon-worthy book boyfriends I've read in a long time.

Ren was such a fascinating hero, and every new layer of his life made him even more compelling. Watching all of his carefully guarded identities weave together had me equal parts anxious and obsessed because I knew the truth was eventually going to explode. Even with all the deception, his heart was always in the right place—everything he did came from wanting to protect the people he loved most.

My heart broke for Aria. She was carrying so much grief after losing her fiancé, and seeing her slowly figure out how to live again felt incredibly emotional and authentic. Her journey wasn't just about healing—it was about rediscovering herself, embracing her desires, and allowing herself to feel something beyond the pain. The chemistry between her and Ren was electric, and I loved how she connected with every side of him without realizing they all belonged to the same man. There was something unexpectedly tender about that dynamic that made their relationship even more meaningful.

ARC REVIEW

REN REN REN!!! First Ethan and now Ren😭 I can't explain what these two men have done to me. I'm obsessed with Ren and have already started the book again. I've been in love with him ever since I met him in Sworn in Deceit, and I knew his book was going to destroy me. Ren got a second chance at life, a life that he believes he doesn't deserve, but he's determined to do anything to save her dying sister. Anything except killing the one woman he can't get out of his mind. He is sent on a mission. To protect Aria until he recovers a key from her and then eliminate her. But somewhere between guarding her in the dark and caring for her during the day, she becomes his obsession.

Bodyguard romance is one of those underrated tropes I haven't read much, and this book reminded me why I love it. From being silent and only communicating in sign language to finding his voice to talk to the woman he's falling in love with, Ren completely stole my heart. He's a man of few words, but he showed his love through quiet acts of care and unwavering loyalty to Aria. What I loved most about this book is its emotional depth. It perfectly balanced the right amount of smut while weaving in the moments of humor and found family. The bickering between the Syndicate men got me😂, but the way they became each other's family without knowing added warmth to the dangerous world they live in.

If you love bodyguard romance with twists and suspense and a love story that has the power to emotionally destroy you, this book should be at the top of your TBR. I'm grateful to be one of the early readers of Victoria's book again🖤

Folks, she’s done it again. Victora Lum is back with another banger.

This book took me on a rollercoaster of emotions, there were so many twists and turns and secrets, I was sat the whole time.

Ren is such an interesting character and he has so many different secret identities. It was like a secret pen pal trope times at least 3. I knew it was going to be a shit show when it all came out. He was just doing everything he could to protect the people that he loves.

Aria was going through it. My girl is still dealing with the grief of her fiancé dying and not fully knowing how to move on. She was ready to get down and dirty with it to start feeling again. And my girl was kinky, she was into some weird stuff with Ren and all his secret identities. He just knew exactly what she needed and how to give it to her. It was actually really sweet to read how she felt connected to all the different aspects of him without knowing that they were all the same person.

The mystery in this book was really intriguing and maybe I should have guessed the ending but it was a surprise to me. I just loved how through everything Ren stood by Aria’s side. He knew that she might stop wanting him once she found out his lies but he was going to take any time that he had with her. He would take crumbs for the rest of his life.

The bonus chapters were really cute but I’m gonna need a proposal at some point. I just know that Ren would do it so good and probably with her favorite flowers.

I received an arc from the author.

Victoria Lum did it again!!!

First of all, thank you to Victoria Lum for the ARC. I'm so grateful I had the chance to read Ren and Aria's story early!

I swear, I had been waiting for Ren's story ever since he stole my attention in the first book, and it was worth every second of the wait.

Ren... AHH. This man. The mysterious, masked assassin who barely speaks? I was already obsessed with him, but getting inside his head made me love him even more. The fact that he only talks to Aria? I melted. He's dangerous, deadly, completely unhinged when it comes to protecting her, and somehow one of the most swoon-worthy heroes I've ever read.

And Aria... my heart absolutely broke for her. She has been through so much pain and heartbreaking loss that all I wanted was to see her find happiness. She deserved someone who would choose her, protect her, and love her unconditionally. Watching Ren become that person was everything. They brought out the best in each other, and I loved every moment of their journey.

The chemistry, the tension, the angst, the twists... Victoria Lum had me hooked from the first page and never let go. Every time I thought I had something figured out, another surprise came along.

This series just keeps getting better, and Guarded in Darkness is easily one of my favorites. Ren and Aria completely own a piece of my heart now.

If you love morally gray heroes, protective assassins, obsessive romance, emotional angst, and plenty of twists, you need this book on your TBR.

Apparently starting a series with Book 2 is just my personality now. 🙄😂 New author? New world? Logical place to start? Absolutely not.

Did it ruin the experience? Not even a little.

Guarded in Darkness completely pulled me into its gritty, immersive world. Having lived in Hong Kong, I loved this world, it felt vivid, atmospheric, and added so much depth to the story.

And Ren… excuse me while I raise my standards. 🖤 A masked, mute assassin sent to protect his target… until he’s ordered to kill her? SIGN. ME. UP. This man would burn the world for Aria while somehow still respecting every boundary she sets. The bar has officially been moved to another continent. Also… can someone start calling me gongzhu (princess), please? Asking for no reason whatsoever.

Victoria Lum somehow balances mafia politics, secret societies, shocking twists, found family, and an unforgettable romance without making it feel overcrowded. Every reveal lands, every character has purpose, and those multiple Ren personas? I was absolutely unwell.

If this list doesn’t convince you, I don’t know what will:
🖤 Bodyguard/Target
🎭 Masked Mute Assassin
🗡️ Stalker/Protector
🔥 Morally Grey Hero
👀 Secret Identities
💀 Mafia & Secret Society
❤️ “Touch her and regret it”
✨ Heist crew vibes

I came for the assassin. I stayed for the obsession, the twists, and a man who proves the deadliest people sometimes love the hardest.

Now excuse me while I go back and read Book 1… because apparently that’s how I’m doing this series.

My rating:: 4.5⭐
Spice Rating:: 4/5🥵

Victoria Lum did it again. She ate and left no crumbs!! Honestly, I expected nothing less.

I was already intrigued by Ren after reading the first book in The Antihero Syndicate, but I wasn't prepared for how completely he'd consume my thoughts. By the end of this book, I was obsessed with both Ren and Aria. Ren is the kind of character who doesn't say much—but every word he does say carries weight. Somewhere along the way, I realized I have a weakness for the quiet, emotionally reserved men who only let their walls down for the woman they love. And Ren? He fit that perfectly.

The contrast between the MMC & MFC made this story even better: an assassin known as the God of Death who was sent to unalive her and a nurse whose compassion challenges everything he believes. They were never supposed to fall in love, yet every moment between them made it feel inevitable.

I personally don't like the stalker trope however I enjoyed every second of it here and the credit goes to the writer. I couldn't help but fall in love with every version of him just like Aria did😭🤧

The book won't disappoint. The chemistry? Incredible. The romance? Worth every page. The emotional moments hit, the tension never let up, and the character development made me fall even harder for these two.

Thank you so much to Victoria Lum and her team for trusting me with an ARC of Guarded in Darkness. It was an honor to read Ren and Aria's story before release, and I'll definitely be thinking about these two for a long time.

I was so excited to see more about the mystersilent Ren, after the cliffhanger with him in book one! It segues so perfectly from book one to this one, so I highly reccomend reading that one as well!

The suspense and romance mixed with organized crime and th supporting characters was excellently done here! I found Aria a bit too quick to spiciness but putting that aside, I really liked her strength mixed with just the right amount of softness. Her chemistry with Ren is full of sparks. It grows with a overall slow-ish burn that feels right and natural.

The hidden identities may require a little leap of faith as to them staying hidden...but it was a neat addition to add some fun to the story. There's inner workings of the crime syndicate.in the background that kept me engaged as I like, as well as having our core cast of characters and side characters from other books making appearances which I always love when Victoria does that!

I really loved this installment and especially the leads' dynamics, getting inside Ren's head in particular...his thought process, his dilemmas, his duties, ideas of revenge, secrets, grief etc. He's a wonderful mix of tenderness, angst and precision k1ller when the need arises. Truly a man who will burn the world to protect those he loves and we love that kind of man! Ready for book 3!

This is book two of the Antihero Syndicate Series, and Victoria takes us on a wild ride, with morally grey obsession, chemistry that cuts deep, and twists that hit when you least expect them. She takes us straight into Aria and Ren's shadows, where danger and desire collide, and nothing stays safe.
Aria is trying to survive the heartbreak of losing her fiancé, trying to make sense of her new reality, but the danger around her shifts faster than she can track.
Ren is the masked, silent assassin for the Triads/double agent for the Syndicate and has been secretly watching Aria from afar for a while now.
Their connection starts in the dark, anonymous, quiet, and exactly what she can handle. No questions. No daylight. Just two broken people finding something steady in the shadows. Ren has become obsessed, but when he is given a target, he must obey in order to protect his sister. Aria is the one complication he never planned for and falls in love with every fractured, furious, beautiful part of her… even before she knows the monster in the shadows is him.
Their story is about finding your way back to yourself, choosing to keep going even when everything feels rigged, and finding the one person who makes your chaos feel like purpose.

Thank you Victoria, for the opportunity to be an ARC reader

5🌟, 3🌶️

I went into this story expecting to enjoy it, but I walked away completely obsessed.

Ren is such a layered and fascinating character. He is a quiet, masked assassin who lives in the shadows, yet he has this deep, undeniable pull toward Aria that kept me hooked from the very first page. It is rare to find a hero who is so ruthless and dangerous, but also so incredibly tender and devoted to the woman he loves.

Aria’s journey to rebuild her life after a tragic loss felt incredibly raw and authentic. My heart truly broke for her as she navigated her grief, and seeing her find strength in such an unexpected way was beautiful. The chemistry between them is absolutely scorching. I loved how their connection built up both in the light and the dark, capturing that rare feeling of finding someone who finally sees all the hidden parts of you.

This book was an emotional rollercoaster with just the right amount of high stakes suspense to keep me guessing. Beyond the action and the dangerous atmosphere, what really stuck with me was the vulnerability and the deep, enduring bond that develops between them.

It is the kind of story that keeps you up way too late because you simply cannot tear yourself away, and I am already desperate for more of this world.

~~~~
Huge thank you to Victoria Lum and The Author Agency for the ARC! 😍 All my bookish thoughts are completely my own. ✨
I loved the first book of this series so much. This one was no different. It had so many good twists, excellent spice, wonderful character development, and me feeling my feels more than once.😅🥺 Victoria is a phenomenal author her writing is just so good! This book follows a nurse named Aria who is Lana's best friend from book one. Aria's fiance Blake who was a surgeon died in the shootout from book one. Aria has been grieving for over a year now. Ren is the silent assassin who is a double agent for the Syndicate. Ren has been watching Aria from afar for awhile now and he has become obsessed with Aria but when he is given a target he must obey in order to protect his sister. As secrets come out and truths are revealed the two quickly find out huge things in their lives may have been lies.😱 Seeing how soft and reverent Ren can be and treats Aria is such a beautiful contrast to the horrific things he does.🥺 But man oh man in the bedroom the man is dominant and possessive and has an absolutely filthy mouth! 😅🥵🥵🥵🔥🔥🔥 The emotions this book made me feel! I cried more than once! 😅😩😭😭 but my favorite part of Victoria's books are the twists that I think I know but am then thrown a huge curveball! 😅🤯🤯🤯
Aria lost her fiance in the most brutal way, but there was someone out there who has to protect her until he gets the key. The key only she supposedly has. He isn't supposed to get.......close.
She becomes the source of his obsession, the masked stranger that sends her gifts, keeps her safe from a distance. Aria feels that there is someone there, and in other ways by him she is comforted and healed what she has kept hidden from those close to her. It's becoming a dangerous game, and the past is slowly unravelling with so many twists and turns, Victoria had me on the edge of my seat. Ren will need to decide whether he stays the monster in the darkness and carry out what he has been ordered to do, or give himself over to Aria who shows him love, a life.
I am in awe, JAW DROPPING AWE, how Victoria writes the most intriguing, twisted characters where you never know how its going to unfold and like Elias' story this has so many heart in your mouth moments it feels like it actually stops!! Its never a one more chapter, as you are dragged into their world well and truly. I cannot wait for the next book and a huge thank you to Victoria for having me as a beta for this book, what an honour.
Guarded in Darkness is Ren and Aria’s story and their story is not for the faint of heart. Their story is tumultuous, easy, hard, loving, chaotic, passion and everything in between.
Aria is still grieving the loss of her fiancé, Blake. She struggles to feel anything… nurse by day saving lives and feeling alone in all the moments in between with sparks of awakening when danger lurks around every corner like secret exchanges with strangers that bring her back to life or silent exchanges with a mute Ren. She knows the former bodyguard is dangerous, but she can’t help but feel safe around him.
Ren is a savage with a conscience working undercover with Antihero Syndicate. He has loved Aria from afar trying to get close but not too close until he devises a way to be with her without her knowing who he really is. When she discovers the truth, what lies on the other side is true healing for them both. There are so many secrets unraveling in this book that kept me on the edge and not all is as it seems.
I loved this book and the anticipation of not knowing what was going to happen. This book was like a game of chess, each play dependent on the other not knowing who was going to win the final checkmate. Bravo on a well done story!!
Ahhh 🥹 Ren and Aria. What a ride!!! I absolutely love how you saw Aria grow stronger with everything that was thrown at her. Ren was troubled with guilt and fought to make his way through.
Aria:
"That rough voice. Like he's a man of few words, but when he speaks, the world stops to listen.
It's honey in my veins."
Ren:
" "I can't," I finally answer her. "But trust me, if I could, there be no force strong enough on earth to keep me away from you." "
Chapter 35...🥹😭😍 All of the feels!!!!
And chapter 40!! That twist?!! Wasn't expecting that to play out that way at the end. Screw you *you know who*!! No spoilers here 😂
Absolutely loved their story and can't wait for Tristan and Sofia's!!!
Guarded in Darkness will keep you on the edge of your seat. It has so many twists and turns you won’t see coming. This world that Victoria has created has become one of my favorites. So much intrigued, lies, hurt, pain and so much more.
Aria and Ren story was a masterpiece. Aria is still grieving from her loss, living in darkness and not sunshine. Taking risks with a stranger who lives behind a screen. Ren is the man behind the mask, is a selective mute. And will do anything to protect his sister. When Ren and Aria interact they share a connection. She lets him in little by little. Not knowing all the secrets he hides, all while protecting her. When her life becomes in danger he will do everything in his power to keep her safe. Their relationship becomes a want and need the pull is strong. The chemistry is undeniable it was beautiful to see. All the highs and low they have to overcome to get to place to be happy will be worth it. It was great to come back to this world. Seeing new friends and old friends always brings a smile to my face. I can’t wait to come back and see what happens next.
Arc was provided for honest review.
Does it sound strange to truly love a book even if I didn’t like the FMC? Like I couldn’t stand her at all, even in the first book. I thought that maybe when it was her turn to shine, I would change my mind, but sadly it wasn’t the case. I’m so sorry Victoria Lum, I did everything I could to try to like her, but it didn’t work.
BUT Ren was absolutely what I hoped he would be, when I met him for the first time. I was so happy to finally be in his head, and discover more about him. His past was heartbreaking, his present was also heartbreaking but with a touch of happiness but his future now is happiness with Aria.
This man is so special, because he did everything he thought was right for his sister, but he was so wrong. He was manipulated since the beginning, I won’t tell you by who. But honestly, I wish I could kill them for him.
The tension between these two is just pure fire, and well this fire was so hot. They were mad for each other, they could understand each other without using words.
I love the clues that Victora Lum has written to make us guess the big reveal. And honestly, I had it, and I was so happy to guess it.
To be honest, I have to say, that my favourite character is Scarlett, she is like the best friend everyone needs and I can’t wait to read her story. And I’m so excited to read more about Aleksei. I was so happy with him in this book, and I didn’t have enough!
And to end this review, the next book is SOFIA!! Hell yeah, the badass queen is coming to us and she will destroy everyone who said no to her! I can’t wait to see that!! And Tristan? The Brody hero? Who is hiding something, who comes almost every single time to save the situation! This man is ready for her! And I can’t wait to discover them!
Triads, mafias, a secret society, a silent masked assassin and a nurse… it feels like the start of a joke. But instead, it was the start of an intense and interesting story from start to finish.
You know how there are those MMCs that are the ultimate red flag. But as you read, they have some hidden layer of sweetness only for her that makes you think, “I mean, he’s maybe not THAT bad.” That’s Ren. While yes, he’s obsessed, it’s the way he notices things about Aria that others miss. The way he gives her space to be herself, and the power she gets from that… loved it.
With lots of strings to follow, sudden twists, and the things you’d expect from a dark romance, this was another enjoyable read in The Antihero Syndicate series.
I’d recommend reading the first book before jumping in here! Both books are worth the TBR add!
I was kindly provided an ARC, but my review is honest and completely my own.
💕💕💕💕💕
I honestly had such a good time reading. I already loved the first book in this series, but this one somehow managed to be even better for me.
In this book we got to explore Ren and Aria's Story.
The world kept expanding and I loved discovering more about the world and how everything connected. We got to know about Ren and his past, his motive for being in the Anti-hero Syndicate.
The suspense was great, but what really got me in this book was the emotional depth.
Ren is such a sweetheart and Aria completes him. ❤❤
Their chemistry felt so natural, and I loved how they became each other's safe place. They both went through so much, but seeing them support each other through all the pain made their relationship even more beautiful. I also really liked how the story explored Ren's guilt and didn't just brush it aside. And watching him slowly bring Aria's smile back... that was honestly one of my favorite parts of the book.
The author absolutely delivered with this one. Thank you Victoria!
Overall, this was such a fun and emotional read. It had romance, mystery, action, and so many sweet moments in between. Now I just need the next book because I'm definitely not ready to leave this world yet!
