You're the Best: A Celebration of Friendship

Rate this book
From the I owe you for that night at that dive bar on our road trip. I should not line dance under the influence, and I think we both know that now. I owe you for letting me borrow that really expensive evening clutch with the feathers. I had no idea puppies liked feathers . I owe you for that really poor financial advice I gave to you. It was loud on the subway, but I thought I heard that guy in the suit say, "Buy Enron." I owe you for Brad. Let's not talk about him ever again. You're smart. You're funny. You text just the right amount. You're the one person who tells my about the thing in my teeth without sounding just a little bit superior. You're the best. You're the Best is a thank-you note to female friends, the women we call when the best things in our lives happen—or the worst. Written by two generations of Satellite Sisters, this beautifully packaged hardcover book explores how we rely on our friends to get us up, get us going, get us through, and, most importantly, get us laughing. It makes a superb gift for friends, sisters, mothers, daughters, and granddaughters.

You’re the Best is filled with short essays and shorter (mostly) humorous pieces about friendship that had me nodding in agreement or laughing that laugh that makes people ask “what are you reading?” I thought it a great idea to have the next generation of Satellite Sisters (Dolan nieces, daughters and daughters-in-law) add their two-cents. Themes include Life, Love, Family, Play, and Change.

I enjoyed You’re the Best and think it would make a great gift this holiday season for sisters who are more like friends and friends who are more like sisters. *I received a review copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

Thank You to Prospect Park Books for providing me with an advanced copy of The Satellite Sisters' You're the Best: A Celebration of Friendship, in exchange for an honest review.

PLOT - The Dolan sisters (Lian, Liz, Julie, Monica and Sheila) have made a name for themselves via their highly successful blog, podcast and column for O Magazine, under the moniker: The Satellite Sisters. In their latest book, You're the Best: A Celebration of Friendship, the sisters dispense wisdom and tell stories involving a variety of topics, including friendship, relationships, and living to the fullest at every stage in life.

LIKE - You're the Best is short and sweet. I devoured it in a single sitting. I read a digital copy, but I envision this being the type of book that would be more of a hardcopy purchase to give as a gift.

Although a majority of You're the Best is written by the Satellite Sisters, they have also included chapters by their "Second Generation Satellite Sisters", which include their children and daughter-in-laws. This provided a greater range of ages and perspectives, a welcome addition to the book.

My familiarity with the Satellite Sisters is through their O Magazine column. What they do in both the column and in You're the Best, is they create a warmth. As a reader, I feel like another friend, having coffee and discussing life. I think this ability to make the reader feel included, is a huge part of their success.

DISLIKE- Several parts of the book included lists. One example, is the Satellite Sisters wrote a list of people that they would like to have as a "Fictional Friend"'; which included famous people (living and dead) and fictional characters. Although the lists were fun, they also seemed like filler to pad out the book.

RECOMMEND- Yes. The holidays are coming and you can save a lot of time shopping, if you buy this book for all of your female friends! You're the Best is a heart-warming and uplifting book, that many women will treasure.

A sister doesn’t necessarily have to be a blood relative to be an extra special person in your life.

YOU’RE THE BEST: A Celebration of Friendship by the Satellite Sisters explains this concept in such amazing ways. This is a wonderful book to share with those ‘sisters’ who touch your life and make it so much richer for just being in it.

In this heartwarming book, the Satellite Sisters (five real sisters) discuss the importance of our sisters and friends (women and men) who are there for us. These are those friends that are there during the good times, but especially touch our lives when we’re down and need them the most.

This collection of essays touches on the various ‘sisters’ we have in our lives. These are people we have known forever and those we’ve become close at various times in our lives, as well as those we’ve bonded with across the miles without ever having actually met.

This delightful book will have you laughing out loud as you compare the stories to your own experiences. It will tug on your heartstrings as you fondly remember those sisters you’ve lost touch with over the years, as well as those who are no longer with us.

YOU’RE THE BEST is a charming book that can be enjoyed by all ages. It touches on bad advice from good friends and funseekers vs funsuckers among so much more. It’s a humorous and entertaining look at love, life, family, play and change.

Don’t be surprised if half way through the book (or sooner) you’re reaching for the phone to connect with your Satellite Sister(s). This is a superb way to celebrate those special people in our lives that help us in so many ways even when they don’t realize they are.

FTC Full Disclosure – A copy of this book was sent to me by the publisher in hopes I would review it. However, receiving the complimentary copy did not influence my review. The thoughts are completely my own and given honestly and freely.

Celebrate Friendship with The Satellite Sisters in You're the Best

“You’re smart. You’re funny. You text just the right amount. You’re the person that tells me about the thing in my teeth without sounding just a little bit superior.” ⎯The Satellite Sisters

There are certain books that come across my desk and I just have a feeling that they are something special. Whether it is the description or the concept, I know that it should be shared. You’re the Best is one of those books.

Filled with essays and writings on all the things we as women share with our friends, this book is the ultimate celebration of friendship. The Satellite Sisters embark on the task to help all of us remember why friendships and honest relationships are so important in our day to day lives. On top of that, they do this with charm, wit, and sincerity.

You’re the Best is the perfect collection to share with all your girlfriends, family, and any of the women in your life that you would share the best and worst moments of your life with. So…don’t you think it is time to celebrate friendship?

You're the Best is a collection of short essays. Some are funny (ok, most are funny - it's the Satellite Sisters!), some are poignant, but ALL of them are important, relateable, and a joyful read. The book covers friendships (of course), but also family, careers, relationships, birthdays, and more. We excerpted a chapter - Packing List for a Girls Weekend - read it and you'll see why I love the Satellite Sisters, and why I think this book is an important read - for yourself, and for the women in your life.

Perhaps my favorite part was the paragraph on finding a friend in the lap lane. But you will dig into this book and have a different favorite part. Maybe it is the funny dialogue chats at the end of most chapters, or the Birthday Parties (which cracked me up). Never fear - you'll all find something to love and share in this book. It's important. Highly recommended.

Yay Satellite Sisters

They say it before, just as & after you think it. I've long been a fan from their first radio days.

Our "sisters" group, all Oregon university's educators around the state, gathered first thru professional association mtgs, then as retirements & life changes happened, less frequently but more in our homes or at the coast. We called ourselves The Golden Girls, with apologies to Bea Arthur, Betty White & Rue McClanahan.

The Dolans allowed us to be. And I just love the next generation's contributions. I have a list of "could be" & actual sisters, including my wonderful daughter in law/friend, I want to share your book with. Thank you for writing it, Sisters & younger generation contributors.

Satellite Sister Sheila said it best. "We have actual best friends and we have virtual best friends. They both provide laughs, support, and inspiration we need to carry on for another day. I'm grateful that the confident, ambitious, and encouraging Madonna has given me decades of inspiration." For me, if you substitute 'Madonna' out of Sheila's quote with 'Satellite Sisters' and 'decades' with 'years' (since I more recently found the treasure that is the Satellite Sisters podcasts, Facebook pages, and now this book), you'll have a good idea of what I found in these pages.

This is a delightful collection of essays written by female family (and extended family) members of the Dolan clan. Each essay brings humor and insight to the phenomenon of women's friendships. I will enjoy giving this book as a gift to my friends because even though each woman is a very different and unique person, we are bound together by the rules, benefits, adventures (and mis-), and love that makes a friendship a treasure for a lifetime.

The perfect girlfriend/sister book. A collection of essays from 2 generations of sisters/girlfriends/nieces/aunts all about the value of friendship/sisterhood. It's a quick read, long on memories. I enjoyed it on a brisk treadmill walk over two mornings, a lovely way to start my day. It's always good to be reminded of the value of your sisters or girlfriends. Don't hesitate to make this purchase, get a second or third copy for your buddies, you and they, will be glad you did.

Warm, wise, and very witty, this is a great gift book for friends, moms, daughters, and actual sisters. The collection of short pieces-- essays, lists, charts, a Mad Lib-- are full of the Satellite Sisters' sense of humor. I loved the contributions from the next-generation of nieces, a daughter, and a couple of daughters-in-law. Don't miss my favorite piece, Bad Advice from Good Friends.

A sweet celebration of friendship and sisterhood in an attractive, easy-to-read book. I read it in two-seatings and wished it was even longer. I love their voices and think even those who haven't been following along for the past 15 years can appreciate what they have to say about friendships. Can't wait to share it with my great friends! (Merry Christmas, friends!)
