The Necromancer & the Golden Knight by Alix Alora
I actually discovered this book because the author reached out to me on TikTok after seeing me comment about how much I loved the premise—and I’m really glad I gave it a shot because this ended up being a really fun read.
For a fantasy romance, the world-building is refreshingly easy to follow. Nothing feels overly complicated or info-dump heavy, which made it really easy to jump right into the story and stay immersed.
The story follows Elara, a necromancer who’s spent her life hiding from the holy order that hunts people like her, and Kaelen, the Order’s golden knight who has dedicated his life to destroying magic like hers. When a dangerous void threatens their world, the two are magically tethered together and forced into an uneasy alliance to stop it.
What we get from there is a road-trip style adventure full of banter, tension, mystery, and reluctant partnership.
I’d personally call this frenemies-to-lovers rather than true enemies-to-lovers. The tension is definitely there, but the dynamic between Elara and Kaelen leans more toward reluctant allies with great chemistry.
Elara is such a fun FMC. She’s witty, unapologetic, and completely comfortable being the morally questionable necromancer everyone fears. She truly doesn’t care what anyone thinks, and I loved that confidence.
Kaelen, on the other hand, is the classic golden knight who starts questioning everything he’s been taught his whole life. Watching him wrestle with those beliefs while protecting the very person he was trained to destroy adds a lot of depth to his character. He’s strong, loyal, protective and honestly gives a bit of golden retriever energy, which worked really well with Elara’s chaotic confidence.
The banter between these two is fantastic, and it’s really the heart of the book.
Romance-wise, this leans slightly closed-door, but honestly the adventure, mystery, and tension carried the story so well that I didn’t feel like anything was missing.
Overall, this was a really solid debut fantasy romance with great character chemistry, fun dialogue, and an engaging adventure storyline. I’m definitely curious to see where this world goes next.

An absolutely fantastic read! I finished this book in less than a week, and was hooked on every page. It was an easy read, with amazing characters and overall plot.
A lot of times in fantasy we see a big info dump right at the beginning followed by chapters of world building. I feel like this book had the right ratio and was not at all difficult to follow. The magic system was very straight forward.
Chemistry and dialogue between the MCs was on point, but would definitely say this is more acquaintance to lovers rather than true enemies to lovers. I also appreciate that the romance was not overly descriptive, but still beautifully written. Not entirely closed door, more like a partial open door with dim lighting ;)
Alix is a fantastic writer, the description through out the novel were fantastic. I am so happy to have discovered this writer before she becomes insanely famous. Because when she inevitably does, I get to say that I owned a first edition signed copy. 👏👏
