Making gorgeous handcrafted jewelry can be an amazingly simple process that even beginners will quickly master?as long as they have this guide by their side. Written by an experienced artist and teacher, and generously illustrated with attractive how-to photos and drawings, it demonstrates a wealth of easy techniques in superb detail. Twenty dazzling projects?including a twisted wire choker, bangle bracelet, bead pod pin, and mixed metal earrings? are created by wrapping, stitching, and folding metal, and by making cold connections with basic screws, bolts, pop rivets, eyelets, brads, and nails. Sophisticated photographs of each piece highlight its rich textures and visual complexity. Would-be jewelers will love this?and beaders, memory crafters, and anyone eager to explore metal jewelry will want it, too!
An okay book that I think promises more than it delivers as "designer" metal jewelry, I hope, has much more attention to detail than I saw in the projects completed in this book. I found the lack of focus on finishing - sanding, particularly - disturbing! I spend an inordinate amount of time sanding and finishing my jewelry pieces - I'm no expert, just a student - but sandpaper isn't even listed in the tool section at all! The author comes from a textile background, as do I, but one should still have a grasp of the very basics and so very many of the loops and ball heads in here are atrocious, uneven, off-centered, lumpy. That said, there are a lot of things in here to inspire. The Gallery pieces show a wider range of styles and better craft overall. Many of the projects, to me, looked less like jewelry and more like experiments - good or bad, perhaps - but I thought it a bit unsettling.
