I loved Something Beautiful when I was a teenager, and I enjoyed the Lenora Worth books I read back then, but there was something missing in this book, and it was Jesus. The characters talked about praying, they mentioned God a few times, and Gavin says that Lacey brought him back to God… but there is no ‘how’ or ‘why’. It could very easily have been a secular novel, which really disappointed me. I feel like God was tossed in there to make it fit the genre. I hope I don’t feel like that when I reread Something Beautiful.

Lacey Dorsette York came to St. Louis Cathedral to find peace. What she found was a man with a stab wound. Soft-hearted Lacey takes in Gavin Prescott and takes him to her hotel room, where she learns his story. Gavin is the adopted son of Senator Edward Prescott, who is charged with a litany of crimes. After an altercation leaves him wounded and on the run, Gavin has no choice but to accept the help of lovely Lacey York. Gavin comes to care deeply for Lacey and regrets bringing danger into her life. He doesn’t want to involve her anymore than necessary, but Lacey is determined to help him clear his name. Lacey lost her husband and her son five years ago and has withdrawn ever since then, but she can’t help but be drawn to Gavin. She can sense that she can trust him and knows that she is coming to love Gavin. Can she overcome the losses in her life and help Gavin see that their relationship is worth fighting for?

I loved this book. It was very hard to put down. The suspense kept me wanting to know what happened next. There is a good balance between action and passive suspense. The book flows very well and moves from one event to the next seamlessly. It is very engaging.

I was excited for this story. I loved Lorna and Lucas’s stories and was excited to read Lacey’s. Lacey is wonderful, and I was happy to see Lacey find love and happiness. With her faith, strength, and deep love and commitment to others, it was time for her to find it. Gavin was also a fun character. He has to overcome the bitterness from his childhood, but he is a strong hero, rooted in faith, family, and love. Gavin and Lacey are perfect for each other, as they help each other see that they do not have to go through life alone.

Once again, I was happy to see the message to trust God woven throughout the storyline. If there is a message to the In the Garden series, it is to trust God. He will see you through the storms of your life, if you let Him. I loved having an inspiring message at the heart of the series and am almost sorry to have finished it.

Overall, Lacey’s Retreat is a wonderful story with great characters and a rich message. I would highly recommend it.
