What exactly is a "wonder"? According to encyclopedia and dictionaries, a wonder is something that defies the laws of nature, an event or series of events that is difficult to explain. In everyday language we often use the term more a wonder is something that astounds us, inspiring spontaneous applause or a gasp of disbelief.
I wouldn't really call this a travel guide but I didn't feel like making a "coffee table books" category because then I would have to sit there and obsess about which books to transfer over so I just put it in with travel guides. I enjoyed the book, especially the pictures. I had read the book 1000 PLACES TO SEE BEFORE YOU DIE and it only had a few pictures in black and white. I love to look at beautiful pictures and the information was good in a "Time Life Books" kind of way...it was certainly not in depth but it was an easy read and I am happy to have it as a decoration for my house.
A fairly hefty tome, full of lovely glossy pictures and plenty of oft-repeated text. The writing style of this book is reasonable, the layout and printing are top notch, but it is the photographs that really bring it to life. As the title states, there are "100" wonders featured herein, most of which you will be very familiar with, a few you'll know a little about and a few you'll never have heard of. Personally, I had never heard of Milford Sound (NZ), the Itaipú Dam (Brazil/Paraguay), Bagan (Myanmar), Tikal (Guatemala) amongst others. I learned some surprising details about the Taj Mahal, El Djem, the Kremlin, the Pont du Gard, Cologne Cathedral and even the Statue of Liberty. The proofreading of this book is a little lacking in places (especially where the same photo of Cologne Cathedral is used twice!) but it's hardly a slapdash product. I quite enjoyed it, learned a few things and wasn't bored for a moment. 4.25/5
This is a beautiful coffee table book with huge photos of some of the most amazing places on Earth, accompanied by somewhat brief but very informative descriptions of the locations. I might question some of the 100 selections and suggest some of my own, but it is a great book nonetheless.
I just love this book! I am always flipping through it. Everytime I open it, I learn something new and find a new place to add to my bucket list. Readers, I know you love far-off worlds. See, for once, that there is in fact amazing places outside of books!
