Give in to the Glamour…

Sixteen-year-old Ryann Carroll has just run into the guy who saved her life ten years ago. You might think she'd be happy to see him again. Not exactly. She's a bit underdressed (as in skinny-dipping) and he's not supposed to exist.

After her father's affair, all Ryann wants is to escape the family implosion fallout and find a little peace. She also wouldn't mind a first date that didn't suck, but she's determined not to end up like her mom: vulnerable, betrayed, destroyed. Ryann's recently moved back to her childhood home in rural Mississippi, the same place where ten years earlier she became lost in the woods overnight and nearly died.

She's still irresistibly drawn to those woods. There she encounters the boy who kept her from freezing to death that long ago winter night and was nowhere to be seen when rescuers arrived. He's still mysterious, but now all grown-up and gorgeous, too. And the more she's with him, the greater the threat he poses to Ryann's strict policy-- never want someone more than he wants you.

Seventeen-year-old Lad knows the law of his people all too well: Don't get careless and Don't get caught. It's allowed his race to live undetected in this world for thousands of years, mentioned only in flawed and fading folklore…

Lad's never been able to forget about Ryann since that night ten years ago. When he sees her again, his fascination re-ignites and becomes a growing desire that tempts him to break all the rules. He's not even supposed to talk to a human, much less fall in love with one.

And the timing is atrocious. The Assemblage is coming, the rift between the Light and Dark is widening, and mysterious celebrity fan pods are becoming more and more widespread and influential. Lad may have to trade his own chance at happiness to keep the humans, especially Ryann, blissfully unaware and safe.

“So you meet an amazing guy in the middle of the woods – why does this kind of thing never happen to me?”
“I guess you should go skinny-dipping more often,”

This was a YA paranormal romance, with creatures you’d expect to find in Lord of the Rings!

I liked Ryann, although she did come across as a little immature at points. It was obvious how much she liked Lad though, and it was noble of her to sacrifice everything for his happiness.

“I’m surprised your father let you leave with me – I’m surprised he me leave at all.”

The storyline in this mainly dealt with Ryann and Lad getting to know each other, and Ryann trying to find a way to save the trees which were home to Lad’s family. I was a bit surprised when I found out what race Lad was supposed to be, as I’m not sure I’ve ever read a book with this type of paranormal creature in it.

“It was impossible. It was crazy. And I knew it was true.”

There was some romance, although it seemed like Ryann and Lad weren’t going to be able to be together and have a relationship because of the differences between them.

“The kiss was perfect, firm but not too aggressive, gently exploring and inviting me to do the same.”

The ending to this was fairly happy, but the epilogue then left us with a cliff-hanger.

First Thoughts

I feel terrible for saying this, but I did not enjoy this book. The characters left a lot to be desired, there were odd additions to the book (fan pods?) that confused me, and the "plot twists" were too predictable.

I get that Hidden Deep is a YA novel and the characters are teenagers, but Ryann acted more like a 7 year old than a teen. I grew tired of reading the story through her eyes--childishly leading one boy on while pursuing another, crying for confusing reasons, and falling in "forever love" with a boy she hardly knew--I just couldn't stand it.

The book picked up a little during the last few chapters and, though I admit the epilogue piqued my interest, I still think it's safe to say I will not be continuing the series.

What I Enjoyed

The explanation for how Elves hide their immortality.
In Hidden Deep, there are Dark Elves that use their glamour to become celebrities. Well, if Elves are immortal, won't the general public notice that their favorite celebrities hardly age and never die? Well, no. The simple explanation is that when it is time for a Dark Elf to take themselves out of the spotlight, they arrange a "death" by car accident, drug overdose, etc. So then I started wondering if celebrities were really Dark Elves and how maybe all the ones we thought had passed are actually partying it up on Earth somewhere.

What Could Have Been Better

The insta-love.
I have been guilty of gushing over insta-romances before, but this was definitely not one of those romances. It went from odd boy watching Ryann swim in her underwear, to her immediately traipsing around the woods with him, to them falling in love with each other, to them almost having sex, to having them having the "forever love" conversation. It just wasn't believable.

The references to fan pods and odd paragraphs about sweet tea. Ok, so fan pods and sweet tea served a weird purpose toward the end, but while reading, I couldn't help but to wonder if Amy Patrick was digressing from her story in an unusual manner.

The abnormal dialogue. Every time Ryann referred to Lad as her "icing on the cake" I wanted to slap her silly. Please stop saying that. No one says that. Other odd dialogue in the book includes:
"Ryann, this is so good, but my hips and thighs are begging for mercy. I already have ten extra pounds of un-tanned cellulite. I don't need anymore."

and
Actually, it was the one thing that made me feel lucky to be built like a string bean. I never counted calories, and I never drank tea without sugar.

Let's be real. What teenager is thinking about calories? The teens I grew up with ate candy for breakfast and hot pockets for lunch. We didn't care about calories.

I'm sorry but I can't recommend this to anyone. I encourage others to try it if they are interested, but I won't actively recommend it.

Verdict: For teens who love supernatural romances.

I’ve read a lot of disappointing book lately, and after reading this one, I realised something. A five star book doesn’t have to be flawless; it has to make me love it despite its flaws. Hidden Deep is one of those books.

I loved Ryann. She's a character with Southern American charm who strives to remember that a man shouldn’t be her everything, he should the icing on the cake. I was drawn in by her voice and entertained by the way she chose to go about getting her way. She wasn’t perfect and lived to regret, and that made her very easy to connect with.

It starts out with a mystery boy and instant chemistry followed by forbidden love and another boy on the scene. I couldn’t help but think of Twilight although I can promise you this book has something more to it. More energy, character, and far more mystery.

Broodiness is replaced with sassiness.

Blood is substituted for sweet tea.

Vampires become.... well, something I was never going to guess!

Not knowing what Lad was made me read and read and read. That said, a lot of this book was very predictable. Some of the ‘twists’ were so obvious I was surprised the main character didn’t cotton on earlier. I would go as far to say that some scenes should have happened sooner, and once they finally came around, it was more about getting that bit over and done with. Yet even in those moments, I wasn’t too sure which way the characters would swing and that’s what made me keep reading.

Some parts warmed my heart, others made me smile. Most of all, I was rooting for Ryann and Lad to find a way to make their romance work. What more could you ask for in a romance novel?

A few sections were a little abrupt and once or twice the scene jumped forward within a paragraph rather than a break. That’s more of a stylistic choice and didn’t ruin the book for me in the slightest.

The epilogue on the other hand threw me and I'm not too sure what to make of it yet. It’s basically a snippet that yanks you by the hair as you try to put the book down, asking, “Where do you think you’re going? Not away from this series, I hope...”

As a standalone novel, epilogue not included, it’s a book I was glad to read and sad to finish. On the other hand, book 2 will need to have more to it. The story needs to get more complicated and less... happy. It’s all very sweet and fuzzy at the moment, which is a welcomed change in the young adult category, but it won’t work if it continues with the same feel. It needs to get a bit rougher or darker, a little more conflict and a bit less predictability.

Despite those flaws, I loved it. The mystery, the narrator’s voice, the men... This book was more than just the icing for me. ;)

Being surprised by a book you don’t expect much from is always a gift. I love it when I fall deeper into the story as I move from one chapter to the next. That’s what I got here.

As the blurb says, Ryann falls in love with her rescuer from ten years back who disappeared right after he helped her. Without him, she would clearly be long dead. Since no one saw the boy, they all pushed Ryann to believe she imagined it all but she never fully believed them. She goes back to her grandmother’s home years later and found him again….or rather, he found her.

Instant attraction. Instant love. Just like a lot of YA books nowadays, this is what happens to both. But then again since they have history together and there is ancient magic involved, it’s easy to swallow.
At the same time that Lad comes back to her life, a gorgeous sought after guy from her school starts pursuing her. Nox is perfect in a rockstar way, but there is something off putting about him, something Ryann can’t quite trust…and of course he’s not Lad. But he does play a big part in the story….and I predict much more so in the next 2 installments.

Lad is not human. He is of an ancient race that communicate without speaking. But even among his people, Lad is different. He is of a station that should remain untouched, especially by a mere human girl. But something happens that forces his family and his entire community to acknowledge the existence of Ryann in his life.

It’s hard to say more without divulging important points in the book. There’s that angle of the missing black sheep brother, Ryann’s beautiful and ageless grandmother, the huge land of Ryann’s family and it's connection to Lad’s life, Lad’s powerful parents and their equally powerful enemies, mysterious fan pods that may be causing death among regular humans…..

In my humble opinion, there are too many subplots to this story, but if you look at it as a whole, it still worked. However had the author dropped a couple of story lines, the book would still stand and leave readers like me more focused on what’s most important.

The descriptions of Lad’s beauty, his perfect torso to his beautiful green eyes were repetitive. I mean after the 4th time I just wanted to scream I GET IT ALREADY! So hopefully the 2nd book will have much less of that and more of……something else.

In a way this book reminds me of Twilight….. without the perfect Cullens. There is that obsessive love, the perfect specimens that aren’t human, a beautiful girl who has low self esteem, the insta-love and so on. But as a whole, this book is a delicious read. I actually went back to the first chapter immediately after finishing the epilogue which is EPIC by the way. The cliffhanger left me with my mouth open and ready to reread the whole thing (which I kinda did).

Plus kudos to the author for putting a new spin of the Elven. They are so far beyond the ones we read as kids, tiny people sewing pretty shoes. Here they are hotter than hell…..much like Orlando Bloom in the Tolkien series……or even hotter.

So if you’re into mystery, young love, thrills, the otherworldly, and have gotten tired of vampires, werewolves, angels, demons and greek gods (or demi gods), pick up a copy of HIDDEN DEEP come March. I believe you’ll find a new couple to root for in Ryann and Lad.

***I received a copy in exchange for my honest review*****
This book was a fun and interesting story about a girl named Ryann whose parents are getting a divorce. As a result, Ryann and her mom move into her grandma's house located deep in the woods of a small town. It is there that she meets Lad, a boy that saved her ten years ago that has many secrets about where he comes from.
The entire storyline was just amazing. Lad and Ryann were so perfect together and I was really able to see the love blossom between them as the book progressed. Ryann prided herself on not being the type of girl to stop her life for a guy and she struggles with this once she gets to know Lad and where he came from. This book had me immersed into the story from the first chapter. Amy did an amazing job with the characters and I even fell in love with Nox a little! Ryann was the type of girl that had her life completely turned upside down when she met Lad and it was not a bad thing for her! I especially loved the sacrifices they were both willing to take for each other. The book ended on a huge cliffhanger and I cannot wait for the next book!!!!

Thanks to Netgalley and All Night Reads for giving me this book to review.

Ryann has recently moved back to her childhood home after her parent’s messy divorce, the same place where 10 years ago where she almost died and was saved by a mysterious boy. After swimming in a pond, she meets the young man who saved her, Lad and becomes more and more drawn to the woods and the enigmatic man who is keeping secrets. Lad knows the law, don’t get caught and don’t get too close to humans, but he has never been able to forget Ryann, but will he go against everything he has known to have a chance with the girl of his dreams?

Hidden Deep is an enjoyable light paranormal novel which was fast paced and hard to put down. There was not much action and it was very predictable but had a lot of romance. I have never read a paranormal book with these mythical creatures in them and it was interesting.

I liked Ryann as, even though she is a bit immature, she had an inner strength and is relatable especially with the situation with her parents. Lad was a shy sweet guy but also was strong, mysterious and protective. However, the romance was a bit irritating as it had insta-love and a bit of a love triangle, but Ryann and Lad did have good chemistry.

I look forward to reading the next book Hidden Heart. I would recommend Hidden Deep to fans of Wings by Aprilynne Pike and Ever Shade by Alexia Purdy.

I was fortunate enough to have a chance to read this book before it's release, and I LOVED it! It's been a long time since I've been able to get lost in a book, but the writing here is deliciously strong, with unique voices for every character, wonderful description, and intricate plot weaving. Yet never once does it forget that at heart, it's a sweet-but-sexy YA romance about a young girl trying to decide who she is, and finding first love...even if there is magic involved. :) The stakes and complications keep rising, helping to set up both the end of this book and other books in this series. I can't wait until the next book comes out in the series, and it will probably keep me up all night again reading it.

*I received a free ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review* OMG I'M WRITING THE FIRST REVIEW FOR THIS BOOK ON GOODREADS!!!*HAPPY DANCING*

Ryann, as a kid, once went into the forest while her family feasted at the dining table. She slipped silently into the alluring woods where she fell asleep and would have almost frozen to death if a little boy with curly blonde hair hadn't saved her. A few years later, she comes back to live with her grandma and she can't seem to resist the call of the woods once again. After returning from the woods she told her parents about the boy who'd saved her but they all thought she was crazy. After a while she started believing it too until she went for a swim in her underwear and found a big, beautiful blonde boy looking at her with astonishment. I loved their first meeting; it was cute and funny!!

After she realizes that he was the same boy who saved her, she keeps him a secret from her mom and grandmother. They forge a strong friendship as their meetings continue in the beautiful and enchanting landscape of the woods. At the same time, the hottest boy at school, Seems to be into Ryann but the one she's interested in is weird, He's always barefoot and climbs trees like Tarzan. Lad was a complex and mysterious character that Ryann was dying to unravel. As for Nox, their relationship was so easy and comfortable, she didn't have to try to hard and everything just came naturally. And i have a feeling they could be amazing friends but with that cliffhanger at the end, i'm not so sure that's all they can be. I know there'll be loads more of him in Book 2!! YAY!!!

But as time goes on, Ryann and Lad grow into something more and they find true love and everything is all good until Ryann is tired of the secrets Lad seems to be keeping. I really didn't expect it when he revealed his secret. The tension had been building up so much and i could not have anticipated that revelation. There was no insta-love just a gradual build up to their love that stemmed form their first meeting so long ago.

The plot itself was great and intriguing. I found myself flipping the pages faster and i seriously loved the protagonist. I found my heart breaking with her when things went southwards and i just felt so sad but then when she had hope so did it-it was just a whirlwind of emotions that you experience along with the protagonist! There is a little bit of forbidden love but you never really pay attention to it because you see how fiercely the characters love each other so you already knew that a love like that couldn't possibly be denied!

As the story progresses there are more shocking revelations that surface and just left me open-mouthed! I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!CANNOT WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL!!!

So good! This book kept me wanting to read more and I couldn't put it down!
This boy saves a girl who wondered into the woods behind her grandmas house, of course no one believes her about the boy so she just thinks she must have imagined it, well years later her and her mom move in with her grandma and she's out exploring the woods and she runs into him... He saves her again... And the whole time I'm trying to figure out what the world is he...and I would have never guessed right. I loved that part of the book but there was parts that were a lot easier to guess and a lil eh, but all in all I loved this book, oh and the ending ...so ready for the next book!

Finished in one day! Could not put it down! Some stories are able to really capture your attention and make you FEEL what the characters feel. Hidden Deep was one such story for me. Sweet tea, secrets, and young love--oh my!I LOVED the romance between Lad and Ryann. It's so sweet, natural, and addictive. They have many obstacles to overcome for their relationship to be able to continue. I'm definitely getting the next book in the Hidden series to see what happens!

This book was fantastic! I loved how the author slowly introduced me to a whole new world bringing it all together in a surprising way. The characters are wonderfully described and I've already cast the characters for a movie, which I would love to see happen. I am looking forward to Book 2 and 3 to see how things end up for Ryann, Lad, Nox and Grandma! I did win this book here on Goodreads and I am so glad that I did!

Um, I did not expect to like this as much as I did - I mean I started it with extremely low expectations and here I am knocking out a high 3 star rating.

This book definitely took me by surprise. I didn’t know what to expect when I started reading and let me tell you, the insta-love and some of the writing was cringe with a capital C, but I kinda loved it at the same time?? I mean I read this in one sitting and I bloody love Lad. Someone find me my own little elf prince because this one is too much to handle.

- the writing was flowery, to put it lightly. amy could have definitely used some simpler words and less exaggerated detail to make this flow better & some random speech and added words seemed weird: I’m not sure how old the author is, but teens don’t speak how they did.
- the relationship was cute, just cute. I mean I wasn’t utterly invested in it and it’s a very cute romance for a young teen 100% but it was insta-love if I ever saw it. I clearly didn’t mind it too much though because here I am at two am writing this review and smiling like an idiot.
- yeah, the plot was so predictable but sometimes I just need that, you know?? I sometimes just need to devour a quick and light fantasy read.

overall, a decent story and I would recommend if you want a quick read. I will be grabbing book two because I need more of Lad in my life (please & thank you).

Even though it's been a few weeks since I've read this book I'm still not quite sure how I want to review this book. On the one hand I enjoyed it, it was an interesting plot with a unique world. On the other hand it was quite predictable and the romance was a little annoying.

Ryann tells herself she'll never want a man as much as he wants her. She doesn't want to end up like her mother who was crushed by her husband's affair. I never really felt like Ryann believed this but it was something she told herself anyways. She's all in for Lad.

Lad. It took me a bit to get used to his name. I didn't really care for it. Still don't to be honest. He felt very childish and simple at first but his character changed a little as the story progressed.

I didn't care much for the love triangle (if you can really call it that), Ryann uses Nox quite a bit to make Lad jealous all the while Nox is developing real feelings for her. So that's messed up.

The romance was a typical YA romance. Love at first sight, making each other jealous with other people, yada yada yada.

Now as for the overall plot, this was about 90% romance and the rest was about something darker going on in the real world. There are fan pods where the humans get glamoured but I couldn't say for sure what happens to them. I think the rest of the books (hopefully) dive deeper into this topic.

It was well written and intriguing enough that I do want to read the rest of the series. I want to know what's going to happen with Ryann and Lad, along with the fan pods, and a few other things I can't mention because of spoilers.

While not the best I didn't regret reading this book and look forward to the rest of the series.

I flew through this well written teen fantasy romance. It's not exactly what I typically read but I actually enjoyed it. The characters are well thought out and that made it interesting, especially in a time when I needed to keep myself entertained and my mind's on other things. Simply put, this story helped me relax during some difficult times. And that's a big plus.

So what's it about? It's about an impossible true love. It's also like a fairy tale in many ways as the plot shares many similarities with one. I'm sure you can guess what they might be if you've seen those popular Disney animated movies (and who hasn't?). In those regards it's kind of predictable. I actually did guess a few plot elements but then I don't think they were meant to be big secrets anyway.

I liked the characters in here. Many of them seemed real and likable. They faced difficult problems and struggled with what they should do. And sometimes the best thing to do is the hardest...and the thing you don't want to do at all. That's the problem that Ryann faces.

And the guy she falls in love with? He's not human!

I really enjoyed this! Glad I picked it up to read.

I enjoyed the world and the magic/fantasy aspect. I didn't enjoy the characters. Lad being sooo perfect was boring. Ryann came off as cliche. Nox, I found interesting at first, and then he became nothing more than the jealousy guy added in to create drama even though we all knew who she was going to end up when from the start.

I read the first 4 books. I had earned money credit when purchasing items from Amazon.
With that said.. the series is awesome but NOT worth 5.00 an ebook. Would not have bought if it wasn’t for my credits .

Book 1- 5 stars
Book 2-3: 4.5 stars
Book 4: 3 stars
In regards to book 3…. It had to much AVA POV. You can tell it was building up for 5th book but was disappointed it didnt have more of Lad and Ryann story. Their story felt rushed.

Blown away!!!!

As a 28 year-old wife and mother, reading a book about a 16 year old girl is usually not my thing. I’ve had Hidden Deep downloaded for OVER a year or two. I had initially loved the summary, which is why I originally downloaded it, until I saw the age of the main character and I figured it would be just another teenage Twilight wanna be. Fast forward and I’m in a terrible book lurch. I gobble up books like no ones business, but I was stuck between “already read it” and “too corny” with all the new Amazon suggestions. Desperately scrolling through my stash of emergency reads, I stumbled upon Hidden Deep again, blew off the proverbial dust, and gave it a chance. I. Was. Hooked. The world building was basic, but I loved the drama and how REAL Ryann is. Not some twittering, girl child who makes stupid choices, but a head strong girl trying to pick up her broken family and use her brain. The character acts much older than a 16 year old, which slightly makes the mother in me a little more forgiving about her running around the woods alone, making out with boys. Pair that with the lack of reminders about her age and thankfully, the lack of daily high school filler (bleh), this book was a great read and I looked forward to the next one and the character development to come!

Okay.. This book was amazing and I immediately fell in love with it. Actually if I'm totally honest I can't believe how quickly and completely I fell in love with this book.

I now know that I have to read the other two books in the trilogy without a doubt. Once started, I could not bring myself to put this book down and I can't believe I put off starting it for so long! I ended up reading the whole book from cover to cover in one sitting of about 5 hours. I can't wait for the rest of the trilogy!

I loved the relationship between Lad and Ryann. I also loved the surprised along the way.

Overall, one hell of an amazing read and I encourage anyone to pick up this book.

P.s. The myth turns out to be so not what you think it is!

So this is a whole different kind a fantasy read and I absolutely loved it! I was drawn in from page one and couldn't stop reading. Of course there was some predictability in areas and I was like, "I KNEW IT!", but no doubt had me on the edge of me seat.
I'm a big nature loving nerd, so I was really drawn into the description of scenery as well as after finding out what Lad was and his home. I was rooting for Lad and Ryann.
I can't really go into anymore details as I'd end up giving away spoilers, but I really enjoyed this book,a it was beautiful written and I can't wait to get my hands on the second book and continue reading.

I absolutely loved this book! I forgot it was an arc, and as soon as I finished it, went to Amazon to buy the next one, but it's not out yet :( The author fantastically portrayed the Fey in such an original new way. The protagonist Ryann did a good job of sticking to her guns, trusting her instincts, trying to follow her mom's advice on love, but keepting true to herself. The ending was such a cliffhanger though, when is book 2 coming out???

This is not my typical book. It's generally not my go-to, I must read genre. I was cruising FB one day, though, and saw an advert for it. Thinking my mom would love it from the blurb, I snagged it. Well, it showed up on my Kindle too and on a lark, I decided to read it.

I loved it! You have young love, hard choices, intrigue, mystery and so many other things. There were points it even made me cry. Now I'm just trying to find time to read the rest of the books!

This book was great. I was so emotional. I didn't cry when I read the fault in our stars but I did cry while reading this. I was happy one minute then crying the next then back to happy. The ending threw me for a loop and I can't wait to read the next book.

This book was so much more than I expected... I can't even tell you what made me decide to purchase it. Something on Facebook, I believe.

Lad and Ryann had quite the story. I couldn't stop reading! I just downloaded book 2... so here's to skipping sleep! I HAVE to find out what happens next!
