This was an easy one day read, and very entertaining. The author posits the question: what was reading like in a time of fratricidal armed conflict? The answer was surprising. Many, many books were read during the time and many new libraries established. Unfortunately, especially across the South, many books and libraries were pillaged. He goes into some detail describing the common soldier's role in this destruction. A very good read and well worth the time.

An excellent history of library services to the US Army and of literacy in the United States. Written from a library science perspective, it would still be intersted to someone interested in military science primarily. A succint and pleasant read.
