Second Draft

Rate this book
A bestselling fantasy author. A British actor. And a celebrity crush that turns all too real at San Diego Comic-Con.

Second Draft is a smart, slow-burn celebrity romance featuring forced proximity, fandom chaos, and the blurred line between fiction and real-life desire.

Breakout fantasy author Emma Whitehart has her life neatly under control — corporate by day, writer by night, and a careful avoidance of romantic entanglements. Fictional men are safer. Celebrity crushes are harmless.

Or so she thought.

When Emma arrives at San Diego Comic-Con to promote her bestselling debut novel, she comes face to face with Darren Cole — British actor, internet heartthrob, and the true inspiration behind her morally grey, fan-favorite villain.

As if meeting him wasn’t overwhelming enough, it turns out Darren has read her book. And he is… intrigued.

Thrown together over a whirlwind weekend of panels, signings, press events, and a fandom determined to ship them into orbit, Emma and Darren find themselves navigating forced proximity in the public eye — where every look is analyzed and every interaction goes viral.

As circumstances keep pulling them together, the line between fiction and reality begins to blur. But real feelings come with real risks — to reputations, careers, and carefully protected hearts.

Against the chaotic backdrop of Comic-Con — filled with banter, chemistry, and fandom energy — the story asks the question every writer both fears and dreams

What happens when the fantasy steps off the page and into real life?

Second Draft | Kate Leone | 5 ⭐️

Something settled on his expression. “You know what? I’m coming over. What’s the room number?”
His certainty hit like a jolt—sharp and unexpected. She blinked hard, forcing the tears back. “Darren, really, I’m fine. I just need—”
“Emma.” His voice dropped to something low and dangerous. “Room number.”
She swallowed, shaking her head. “Don’t you have, like, twenty thousand fans waiting for you somewhere? Just let me—”
“Room. Number.”

This book. THIS BOOK. I was supposed to be doing homework or a million other things, but I just kept coming back for just "one more chapter."
The characters were not only compelling but very real. Emma's imposter syndrome was deeply relatable, and throughout the story, I found myself deeply invested in the choices Emma was making. Even when I was yelling at her inside my head "NO. BAD. DON'T DO THAT" the choices were still so in character and heartbreaking. As for the MMC? Darren is now my new top book boyfriend, and that is saying something. The balance of kindness and strength, flirtatiousness and nerdom, just AGH. So good. Was their love somewhat tropey at the beginning? Yes, HOWEVER, that was very clearly intentional, and it grew past that as the book went on. Overall, such well-developed individual characters and relationship dynamics.
The side characters were also really well done (Leah, I'm looking at you). The friendship between Emma and her agent, Leah, was truly heartwarming, even when they were on the rocks. And the nerd representation of Comic-Con? Amazing. The depiction of fan culture, the nerd community, and sometimes the toxicity that comes with that felt realistic and added another dynamic level to the story.
This author is going to be one that I keep my eye on for future releases! Such a wonderful romantic story, and I will be recommending this to all my nerds and fanfic lovers out there.

I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Before I begin, I must admit that I've been on an Aurora Ascher/Hell Bent series kick. So taking a chance on a closed-door romance was a bit of a shock to my system. That said, I definitely recommend Second Draft if you're looking for something sweet, quick and with A LOT of feelings.

The basic plot revolves around a weekend at the San Diego Comic Con. Emma (FMC) is an author who is currently promoting her book. She runs into Darren (MMC) who is not only a British actor, but is also her celebrity crush. The rest of the book then follows Emma and Darren throughout their Comic Con weekend.

While it is written in 3rd person, it is told entirely from Emma's side. You get a very real insight to Emma's darkest feelings - her insecurities, anxieties, fears. With this, you also get all the butterflies Emma experiences around Darren. The author does a very good job at making you feel every single emotion Emma feels. You feel the nerves she has around Darren, the fears she has when she comes across issues and the excitement she has when it all comes together.

You really get an inside look into Emma's struggles and eventual growth. The book teeters on being a teeny bit less of a romance and a teeny bit more on personal growth. Darren seems to be sure of who he is and where he is in his life, whereas you get to experience Emma go through it all. It's refreshing to be able to relate to a character so well (a corporate girlie recognizes data and deadlines!).

I only have two very small issues, which were not bad enough to bump any stars off of my rating:
1. It's a bit pop culture-y. This normally does not bother me, but I didn't know what a Dune stillsuit looks like. Sorry, I still haven't watched the movies!

2. Not enough Darren or epilogue stories. Kate Leone provides a chapter told from Darren's side if you sign up for her newsletter. This is NOT an ad to subscribe, but it was definitely a nice gift. While this book has a prologue, it seemed too short for my own personal taste. It would have been nice to see just a smidge more story after their HEA.

Overall, I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a sweet romance that brings back memories of having your first crush. I laughed, I cried, I wished I had tickets to this year's Comic Con!

Emma is a debut romantasy author who is a breakout success and goes to San Diego Comic-Con to promote her bestselling novel. She based her morally grey male character on none other than her celebrity crush, Darren Cole; British actor and Internet heartthrob. As if meeting him wasn’t overwhelming enough, he’s read her book and is intrigued. With witty banter and a delicious slow burn, the line between fiction and reality began to blur for Emma.

I absolutely loved this book! It entirely takes place at San Diego Comic-Con, which I absolutely loved and was so original! I found myself continuously smiling throughout this story and screaming at Darren to hurry up and kiss Emma! I lovedddd all the nods to the different fandoms at Comic-Con and found myself laughing at the fandom scenes the author wrote.

I honestly loved Emma and Darren together. Because her novel was a breakout success, Emma felt like a fraud and was still working her “day job” in fear that her writing success would disappear. I loved learning Emma’s feelings about her book and why she wanted to continue to write. Even though Darren was an A-list celebrity, he was so sweet, reassuring, and protective of Emma and was always trying to get her to see how amazing she was.

The hard part with single POV is not getting to see Darren’s side, but it made the story so much more compelling only getting Emma’s side.

Thank you so much Kate Leone for sending me a copy of your amazing debut novel!!

“Don’t apologize. Don’t make yourself small. You’re incredible, Emma. I don’t know why you can’t see that.”

The fantasies were always there for her, soft and safe when the real world felt overwhelming or disappointing.

For a moment, she just lay there, staring at the ceiling. Suspended between who she’d always been and who everyone suddenly seemed to think she was.

And a shoutout to my favorite fandom that had me giggling 🤭:

“...If you want to eat Skittles in bed and rewatch Gossip Girl in your Hufflepuff jammies, do it back in Minneapolis.” “It’s Ravenclaw,” Emma grumbled.

*I received an ARC copy of this book, but all opinions are entirely my own and honest.

Considering this is the author's debut novel, the writing is very strong. Leone does a great job with the characters, and the dialogue doesn't feel forced between them. The story flows and I liked the chemistry between the main characters. I also liked the addition of the side characters too, particularly Leah!

My only criticism is that the pacing was a little unbalanced throughout the book. It started off slow and then once it reached around the halfway point, the pace picked up and it felt right. However, the ending, especially after the build up to the climax was a little rushed. Personally, I would've liked it to be a little slower so that we could see more of the main characters relationship development. I enjoyed the 6 month time jump but I would've rather we saw more in between.

I really enjoyed the setting of this book. I've only been to Comic-Con once in my life, but Leone was able to capture the atmosphere, excitement and chaos of it brilliantly. It fit the vibes for both of the main characters to be there. Emma is an author promoting her fantasy book and Darren is a movie star promoting his movie there. I also found it was very clever how the author tied in the moments when fiction collides with reality!

I will admit that the connection between the main characters feels very 'insta-lovey'. Normally I don't enjoy this trope but it was done well in this book. The romance is definitely a slow burner, and I liked their banter whilst it was blossoming. It was nice to have the FMC doing the hard work to reconcile the relationship instead of it typically being the man. This is because of the third-act breakup. Emma felt very relatable all the way through, and I liked seeing her vulnerable side and being able to tackle her fears. I really liked Darren's character--reminded me so much of Hook from Once Upon a Time! Be mindful there is 0 spice in this book but there are some lovely kissing scenes when they eventually happen.

I would recommend reading this book if you're looking for a contemporary romance from a new author. It's a fun, heartfelt romance with a sprinkling of emotional depth throughout.

Thank you to Kate Leone for sending me a digital copy of her debut novel Second Draft! Honestly, if I didn’t know this was a debut, I would’ve assumed she was a seasoned writer — her skill is that good. The story flows effortlessly, the banter is sharp and witty, and she had me laughing from page one. I’ll be reading anything she writes from this moment on!

Kate reached out thinking I’d enjoy this with my love of pop culture, and she was absolutely right. The Comic-Con setting is such a fun backdrop, and as someone who loves behind-the-scenes celebrity stories, those little details made it even more immersive. And making the MMC British? Totally my kryptonite — it’s like she just knew!

This is a perfectly paced slow-burn romcom. It does have some third-act drama, which I’m usually not a fan of, but it worked here to add depth and tension. I especially loved that the FMC had to do some of the emotional work herself, confronting her fears and taking responsibility. It made the imposter syndrome feel real and relatable, and showing how fear can push people into irrational choices made the characters feel human and grounded.

Overall, Second Draft is a banter-filled, fandom-fueled romance with a premise that feels like the ultimate romantic daydream. Honestly… who hasn’t imagined meeting their favorite actor and falling in love?

Second Draft by Kate Leone is a funny, emotional and surprisingly deep contemporary romance, and the debut novel for author Kate Leone. I’d say she hit it out of the park.

It’s the story of sudden bestselling author Emma, whose romantasy novel has inspired legions of fans, and given Emma a serious case of Imposter Syndrome. Dragged to San Diego Comic con by her publicist (a force of nature who totally deserves her own book), she crosses paths with British actor Darren Cole, who Emma’s had a crush on for years and who may or may not have been the inspiration for the dark, edgy antihero of her novel.

Emma and Darren find themselves thrown together over the course of the convention - by turns it’s hilarious, tense and very affecting, and both author and actor are forced to look a little more deeply into their own feelings than they were prepared for.

The writing flows wonderfully – you’d never guess this was the author’s first book. She totally immerses the reader in the geeky world of cosplayers, fanatic shippers and everything else you’d expect to find at Comic Con. She also doesn’t shy away from showing her heroine at her worst, which I was really impressed by.

Highly, hugely recommended!

This books was such a surprise! I loved the story - I mean what girl didn't imagine meeting her actor crush and falling in love!?!? But more than the love story, I geeked out at all the fun references throughout the book. Mentions of Dune and My Little Pony and other little easter eggs just added to the fun of this book.

Emma has written a best-selling fantasy novel that has been optioned by Netflix. She attends Comic-Con to promote the book and meets her longtime actor crush, Darren Cole. This is the man she based her smoldering male character on! Then, surprise, Darren read and enjoyed her book!

As Emma and Darren get to know each other, they face the pressures of fans and viral videos. Emma is still insecure about herself as a successful author - she's been working a stressful day job, also. Darren is tired of letting the public dictate his life. Emma has to decide if she can let go of her fears to grab on to something real and good in her life.

*Geeky author FMC
*Hot, broody actor MMC
*Comic-Con setting
*Closed door, but oh chemistry!
*Some mild swearing
*HEA

Pick this up! It's a wonderful novel from a new author. I'm looking forward to more from Kate Leone.

Emma Whiteheart is a breakout romantasy author with a tv deal at her first comic con. Darren Cole is a hot British actor who plays morally grey characters and is rumoured to the inspiration for her villain. Their fans ship them together and when they happen to meet during Comic Con weekend…sparks fly!

When we read the synopsis for Second Draft, we knew this book was right up our alley. It reads like a romcom movie we love to watch over and over again. It takes place over a weekend at Comic Con and we loved all the behind the scenes action and fast paced woo-ing and slow burn romance.

This closed door romance is filled with banter that we just loved. Darren is just a dream celebrity boyfriend (who doesn't want to be romanced by your celebrity crush?) and Emma was so relatable that we were rooting for her success. Kate Leone really captured the fandom world here and how magical and toxic they can be. Plus we got the movie ending!

Many thanks to @kateleonebooks for the e-ARC in exchange for our honest review. Second Draft is out NOW!

An actual 5 star read for me!! I really loved this book!!

As an SDCC goer myself I could really picture all the things our author here was describing and she NAILED IT!! Hall H- nailed it, show floor- nailed it, cosplayers- also nailed it! It was a super fun read and I DEVOURED IT. Our FMC Emma is a breakthrough romantasy author going to comicon for the first time. Her book just got picked up by Netflix for an adaptation and she is pinning for one British actor to play her main man character (Darren our MMC). Emma and Darren go on a couple of adventures throughout the SDCC weekend and grow closer through shared secrets and fun activities.

All the fun aside, this book shows how brutal the reality of social media is and how it can determines someone’s career very quickly. This was a really in depth moment outside of the fun that really brought the book together. I felt what the characters felt. The uncertainty, the fear, the not being good enough.

I’m so happy I read this book and I actually enjoyed the ending. It was not rushed and I felt Kate closed out our loose ends before concluding the story. Of course I wish we had more on Darren and Emma but that’s how it is with every book you read when you love the characters!!

Thank you to Kate Leone for sending me this e-arc! All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed Second Draft! If it wasn't for adult responsibilities, I would've finished this book in one sitting 🤩 I loved watching Emma and Darren's story unfold. I was rooting for them from the get-go. I mean, the flirting, the witty banter and how kind and supportive he was AND he's British... top-tier book boyfriend for me 🔥 I do wish we got a chapter from Darren's POV, especially for the airport scene but that's just me. Romance aside, Emma and Leah's friendship was so heartwarming even when things got a bit rocky. I loved how protective and supportive Leah was (hopefully she's getting her own book. 🤭) I enjoyed the Comic-Con setting. I've never been and I have no idea what goes on there but this was written in such a way that I felt like I was alongside them experiencing everything. I'm usually not a fan of third-act drama but I feel like this added more depth & tension to the story and seeing the work Emma put into fixing everything made it all worth it.

Overall, I loved it. This was an amazing debut novel and I can't wait to see what Kate does next! 💗

Thank you so much to the author for sending me an ARC for free so that I could leave a review!

I really enjoyed this book! It did NOT read at all like a debut novel for the author. It reads like she’s been writing for a while. (Maybe she has!). I really loved the atmosphere. Comic con?? Author meets Star and a little *magic* happens. The relationship between the characters felt natural, but also quick. The book is very much insta-love if you will. Although both characters say they know the other from reading their book or watching their shows/movies. There is 0 spice in this book, so if you’re looking for that this is 100% the book for you. Tons of pining though! As well as some super cute kissing scenes.

The build up to the climax was really good but afterword it’s pretty much over, faster than I would’ve liked. It’s a second act? (Final act break up/get back together plot line) Which is fine, no qualms about that! Just personally wish we saw a little more of how they got to where they were instead of a 6mo time jump. Other wise I have no complaints and will absolutely read from the author again! 😍 Loved the ride, writing style and the characters!

Second Draft is a charming contemporary romance that blends fandom culture, celebrity encounters, and the unpredictable nature of real-life love. The story follows Emma Whitehart, a fantasy author whose carefully organized life begins to unravel when she meets Darren Cole — the British actor who unknowingly inspired one of her most beloved fictional characters.

Set against the lively backdrop of Comic-Con, the book captures the excitement and chaos of conventions, fan culture, and the surreal moment when fiction suddenly collides with reality.

What makes the story especially enjoyable is the playful dynamic between the characters. The slow-burn tension, witty interactions, and moments of vulnerability make their connection feel genuine as the story explores the risks of opening your heart when your life is already in the spotlight.

Overall, Second Draft is a fun and heartfelt romance about stepping outside your comfort zone and discovering that sometimes the best stories are the ones you never planned to write.

Oh my gosh this book was such a fun read!

Second Draft took me back to growing up being a huge fangirl, going to as many cons as I could during high school. Fandom, and super-fandom, is such a odd (read: wonderful, but hard to explain to those on the outside) little experience to be apart of. Kate Leone delivers a fantastic, butterfly-inducing romance while also delivering a truly fan-accurate portrayal of the mystique of Cons. But lets talk about that romance!! I am typically an unabashed reader of explicit open-door romance but the closed door and flirting in this book had me kicking my feet and giggling. Emma has my heart, and her sisterly relationship with Leah was a highlight of this book.

I love romance, and read this from cover-to-cover in one sitting earning a well deserved 5 stars from me!

Fellow romance readers I recommend if you are wanting a read with:
- slow burn
- she fell first, he fell harder
- unintentional miscommunication / deception (Resolved)
- forced proximity

Second Draft is a cute rom-com about a fantasy writer meeting her celebrity crush while representing her book at Comic-Con. Not being a fantasy fan, there were some references that I didnt totally get, but it didn't interfere with the story.

Emma has the opportunity to meet her celebrity crush and pitch him the role in her upcoming Netflix adaption. Darren is more interested in getting to know her as a person. Questions arise about it being a PR stunt, if he's just a really good actor, and if Emma is able to open herself up to love.

After an airport grand gesture and honest communication, Emma gains confidence in herself and gets the man!

This book made me smile all the way through. Was it Earth shattering? No, but not every book needs to be. This book was a light, fun, and refreshing to read!

Thank you @kateleonebooks for reaching out and providing me an eARC. All opinions are my own.

I really enjoyed Second Draft by Kate Leone! As a former (and forever) fangirl, this book felt super nostalgic and relatable.

Emma was a great main character. An author, she bases her novel’s male main character on her celebrity crush (she’s so real for that!) Darren Cole, and the two come face to face at San Diego Comic Con. Seeing her meet the inspiration behind her main character and have her world completely turned upside down was such a fun and compelling premise.

I loved watching their story unfold. I do wish we had gotten a Darren POV, I would have loved to know what was going on in his head at certain moments. Also wouldn’t have minded even just a little more romance between the two of them, they were so dynamic together! Their banter had me so excited, I wanted more!

Also as someone who works in PR, Leah, Emma’s publicist, stole the show for me! I loved how witty and confident she was, and how fiercely she looked out for Emma. I would read a Leah book ASAP!

What stood out most, though, was Emma’s growth. Seeing her step into a version of herself that she wants to be, rather than who others expect her to be, was inspiring and made for great character development from start to finish.

Overall, I had a great time reading this and would definitely pick up more from Kate Leone in the future!

Review of advance copy received from the author. Thank you so much for the opportunity to read your book!

Second Draft is a lovely look inside the head of fantasy romance authors as they’re thrust into the spotlight themselves. It’s impossible not to think of the authors we know and love as we read Emma’s story. Emma is likable, endearing, and smart as hell, even if she makes some mistakes along the way.

Darren is the MMC we all love, in more ways than one. It’s honestly really refreshing to see this take on the love interest, he has a lot of layers and it’s not because he’s morally grey, it’s because he’s a genuine person.

These characters feel real and grounded in reality. I enjoyed every second of this book.

My only gripe is Emma saying the cold in England is worse than the cold in Minnesota but that’s my Minnesota bias peeking through 😉

I cannot tell you how much I loved Second Draft! From the second it hit my Kindle, I just knew it was going to be a favorite. Everything about this story felt so fun and refreshing. If you’re a fan of fandom culture, a good slow burn, or the celebrity crush trope, you need to read this book!

Emma is a fantasy writer who finds herself face-to-face with her celebrity crush at Comic Con, the very man she based her book on. And that’s when things get really interesting. 😉

Emma is such a relatable FMC. I think we’ve all had those moments where we tried to shrink ourselves down to be digestible for others because we were too scared to believe in ourselves. Watching her growth was so rewarding! And her interactions with Darren? Hilarious! Speaking of Darren... cue London Boy by Taylor Swift ...he is just everything. 💓💓💓

Go read this book!

It’s been ages since I read a romance book (been happily stuck in fantasy/romantasy land) and I feel like I’ve been missing out because this was so good.

Kate Leone’s writing was engaging and never felt trite (which is one reason I hadn’t read many romance books lately). The characters had believable dialogues, and you were right there feeling all the emotions of the FMC along the way, from her love of her own characters (Emma is a writer) to her imposter syndrome as she goes from podcast interviews to panels at the convention where the story takes place.

This is a “just one more chapter” book and I feel lucky to have gotten to read an advanced copy. ARCs can be hit-or-miss and this was a definite hit for me!

Wow! If I could give a book 6 stars I would. Second draft is a charming fast paced contemporary romance that features a debut romantasy author and an actor. Emma is attending Comic Con for the first time and meets her celebrity crush/inspo for one of her main characters, Darren. Their chemistry and banter was next level and I devoured this book! 10/10 would recommend. It’s unique to get the behind the scene view of comic con and the forced proximity chaos they get into is wildly entertaining. Plus I loved her PR expert/friend Leah. She was a powerhouse! So many great things packed into this book. Kate Leone’s book is very well written and wildly entertaining. I can’t wait to see what she does next!

Thank you Kate for sending me a copy to read and review!

I really enjoyed this book! Emma is such a relatable character, playing it safe, thinking about others before her self, not prioritizing her own happiness and being to scared to step out of her comfort zone.

Second Draft made me think about my life and I realized that being scared of new things and not doing stuff for yourself will destroy you. From now on I’ll face whatever challenges life throws at me and I’ll do it with my head held high!

Thank you Kate for inspiring me and probably so many others in this world!
To think that this is the author’s debut book is crazy, how does someone make something this good the first time they do it?!

I loved it.
It was fun and fresh.
It was so different from the other books I read recently. I literally couldn't stop smiling as it was so engaging.

I fell in love with both characters, even with some ups and downs.

It is written in third person, but as a reader I really felt what the characters were going through, even more than some other books written with dual povs.

I also appreciated that there weren't any spicy scenes and at the same time it was obvious the tension and the chemistry between them.

As I said, I loved it, but I would have preferred a longer epilogue. I read the book all at once and the book was over too soon.

What a fantastic read, I loved the characters and the storyline. I’ve not read anything by this author before but will definitely be adding to my tbr

Emma is a new author finding her feet. Darren is an actor who Emma based her leading man on. They meet at Comic con and sparks fly as they start to spend more time together.

When Emma is thrown into a bad light with the press and the fans, some damage control needs to happen but things don’t go that way and Emma makes a mistake and can’t take it back.

Will she be able to make it right with Darren or has she lost her chance ?

Excellent book in the romance genre!
A nice flow and easy to read made it difficult to put down. I finished it in 2 days during my vacation. The characters are thoroughly described without it becoming tedious, making them alive and real. The same goes for the surroundings.
All-in-all I'd like to read more from this author! I hope it will be the book that the author who is the main character of "Second Draft" is promoting in the story. It seems to have both an intriguing story as well as being in the same genre...

This was SUCH a fun read. Celebrity crush meets real life at Comic-Con?? Yes please. I loved the forced proximity, the fandom chaos, and all the tension. Sooo much slow-burn longing, not super spicy but still totally addictive. Emma and Darren’s chemistry was chef’s kiss and I loved how the story played with the whole fiction vs real life thing.

It’s flirty, funny, and chaotic in the best way!

HOLY MOTHER!! I instantly fell in love with this book. It was the perfect amount of quirky and heartfelt. The emotions the characters went through felt so real.

I’m a major romance reader, and sometimes these books can start to feel a little…. monotonous. This book is NOTHING like that. I was hooked. I couldn’t get enough. Even with the HEA, I want more. I’m hoping for a whole series with these characters. I could read this over and over again.

I even wanted to read Emma’s book, okay?! The plot to the book sounded delicious, and I’m trying to convince the author to write it…for scientific purposes of course. How cool could that be?

I have no notes. This was as close to perfection as one can get for me. 5/5.

This was a fun and flirty debut romance, set in the world of San Diego Comic-Con. As someone who’s been to SDCC, I really enjoyed getting to relive that experience through Emma - everything from the cosplay fans to the energy of Hall H felt vivid and authentic. I thought Kate Leone did a fantastic job describing the atmosphere and overall vibe of the convention.

I also enjoyed the realness of Emma. She struggles with self-doubt, which we can all relate to, and it’s hard for her to trust and open up to people. I also loved that she was a Harry Potter fan and that there were references sprinkled throughout. Emma’s relationship with Emma was one of my favorite parts of the story.

The romance between Emma and Darren is a bit insta-love, but it worked here. In a way, the two of them knew each other for longer because of their work (acting and storytelling). Their flirting was adorable, and their chemistry really came through on the page. I especially enjoyed the elevator scene.

A slow-burn romance with lots of flirting between characters, which made for a cute story.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
