Gabe Roberts is hit in the temple by a line drive baseball that nearly kills him. Surgical intervention saves him and eventually enables him to recover without damage - except he has become telepathic! Only Gabe and his parents know, and they agree that his telepathic abilities must remain a secret for fear that if the word got out he would be mobbed by people from around the world seeking the word of a new Messiah.
Gabe keeps his secret until he graduates and joins the U.S. Navy. There his secret is betrayed by special questions seeded into the bank of aptitude tests all Navy recruits are required to take. Gabe is enrolled in a special testing program to plumb the depths of his abilities which, according to his test results, are off the charts. He is assigned a "mentor" to coach him in Naval traditions and protocol, not knowing that the man, Intelligence Specialist Second Class (IS2) Montrose Williams's, main function is that of Gabe's bodyguard.
Gabe is sent to the Office of Naval Research (ONR) where his testing, and now, training, are continued more intensely. Gabe quickly establishes his abilities in telepathy, telekinesis and remote viewing and soon becomes a new source of insider information that has the Defense Department clamoring for more. ONR is trying to limit Gabe's exposure but it can use the "anonymous source" excuse just so many times.
The CIA finally convinces the President that Gabe should be under their domain. Gabe rebels, feeling that his being ordered to report to the CIA is nothing short of enforced servitude since he enlisted in the Navy. He agrees to serve a year at the CIA whereupon his enlistment will be terminated under honorable conditions and, as a civilian he can seek employment where he chooses. Otherwise his revelations about America's enemies might dry up even if it causes him to be sent to jail.
Gabe and Montrose report to the CIA and Gabe quickly discovers this is where the action is and he becomes involved in a host of exciting cases ranging from seeing through a Houthi subterfuge to ferreting out a Russian mole at the CIA.
Montrose becomes involved with a beautiful airline flight attendant who ultimately bilks him out of a large sum of money. During the course of the investigation, it is learned that the woman, Annalise Petain has been bilking casino jackpot winners out of large winnings for years, She splits her hauls with Iran's Islamic Republican Guard Corps (IRGC) for whom she is an agent, also teasing out strategic information via her frequent honey traps. Gabe and Montrose track Annalise to Las Vegas where they embarrass her in front of a new target.
Incensed, Annalise swears a blood feud on Montrose and abducts him after shooting his running mate, a Secret Service agent, and a police officer. She and her Death Squad take Montrose to a hideout where she has him brutally beaten in an attempt to find out who he is since he's apparently being protected by the Secret Service. Before she can use further torture techniques, Gabe tracks them down but Annalise escapes. Montrose is transported to a local hospital then airlifted to Walter Reed Medical Center before Annalise can try again. Gabe takes Montrose's place, freezes Annalise when she comes for Montrose and over several hours, drains her of all she knows. She again escapes, killing her two Secret Service guards in the process. Montrose is safe, bur Annalise is still out there after swearing another Persian blood feud against Gabe.
