The Girl Who Bit Me: A Spicy Sapphic Vampire Romance

Rate this book
Six hundred years of immortal friendship. One bite that changes everything.

Ancient vampires Aster Castelmar and Sylvia Maroven have been inseparable for six centuries. They’ve survived inquisitions, wars, collapsing empires, the industrial revolution—but now they face their most challenging obstacle New York City rental prices.

With only a week left in their last apartment, the broke best friends hatch a bold get-rich enthrall a billionaire. With Sylvia’s charm, Aster’s raw strength, and a dash of vampiric hypnosis, the plan should be foolproof.

Then Sylvia bites Aster.

It’s meant to be a joke, a fleeting thrill between lifelong companions. But instead, the bite awakens an ancient bond reserved for soulmates, forcing them to face feelings they’ve spent centuries denying.

Aster and Sylvia, you would’ve loved Shameless by Camila Cabello.

Obsessed would be an understatement. These two idiotic, broke, pining vampires had me in a chokehold from start to finish. If I tried to list everything I liked about this book, we’d be here all day.

What can I say? It was just super fun and refreshing. The vibes were great, and our FMCs were chaotic and impossible not to root for. It had sugar, spice (emphasis on this one), and everything nice. Not even the typos stopped me from having a great time with this one. The author also confirmed a sequel, so I’m SEATED!

I never used the did not finish shelf on GR before.....

So let's give put this one on it for now and see what happens.

I'm DNF-ing at 14% because I just don't fucking care.
I LOVE one of the MC's, but the other MC is giving me ✨nothing✨ and is as thrilling as a fart in a glass jar.
I will come back to this when I'm in a better mood for a book over 420 pages long.
Or maybe when there is an audiobook, because I was keen for lesbian vampire smut, but I feel like i'm dragging myself through mud to get to it. I just didn't feel hooked in the first 14% and my adhd ass needs to be hooked or i'm annoyed.

Valerie Hunter could write Carmilla, but could Sheridan Le Fanu write The Girl Who Bit Me? I think not.

I loved this book so much! I am definitely looking forward to future installments! Everybody should read this book at least once in their lifetime- it truly is that good <3

So this was amazing and I need more of Aster and Sylvia.
After that ending I’m seriously expecting a sequel and I’ll be very dissapointed if there is not because i really need to see more of them as a couple.

I never bought the fact that they were centuries old; never bought just how long they had known each other; never bought they were clever enough to survive that long.

Then I learned this was originally a marvel fanfic from someone on reddit and it made sense why the characters had nothing going on for them and felt so flat: they relied on you knowing a different character and just imagining them on the page instead.

As usual, im a hater but not THAT kind of hater so my disclaimer:
Fanfiction is great and sometimes better in quality than a lot of the slop currently being published traditionally. However, it's not the case for all fanfics. Some cannot stand on their own; because the plot in either senseless or uninteresting, and the character work was done by someone else and the author is not adding anything to it.

Overall this was a good book and I had a fun time. It's incredibly fast paced and easy to read. The relationship between Sylvia and Aster was so cute and interesting to follow. There's so much yearning going on between them!!!!!!
They're a bit messy and toxic but they also have this beautiful and sweet side, and those things combined felt perfect. I specifically love the banter and teasing between them, it's to die for.

Is this the best book written? Nah probably not. There's some typos and it could benefit from some more editing but i was just so obsessed with Sylvia and Aster that I kind of didn't care about it.
There's not a lot going on plot wise, it's there, but it felt a tad underdeveloped to me and I found myself wanting a bit more of that.

If you just want to have a good time and want something easy and light then I definitely recommend checking this out. It is quite spicy, so if you're into that I think you'll enjoy this!

Quite interesting story. It takes a while to understand all the reasoning behind.
I think I would have liked for it to have more flashbacks about the past eras.

How absolutely toxic these vampires are, showing only humanity in their love for each other.

It could have been a bit more polished, but I really liked the idea behind. It was just a bit chaotic in the execution.

I can't get enough of how the vampire myth never dies but just keeps evolving.

Curious about what's next.

You need to stick to reading it if you want to understand.

3.8 stars for me.

Did I love this book ? Yes I did. Is it good enough to be more than 2 stars ? No it is not. The plot holes in this book are just a little itsy bitsy tinsy too crazy for me to ignore. Half of the time I didn’t even know what was going on and I just wanted it to end and end it did. I’m so unsatisfied with the romance between them, it was there but it was meh( this might just be me and my high standards). It really just felt like a rushed book but I kept thinking this would be great for a movie or series. Lesbian murderous vampires.

i love me some friends to lovers romance especially that it comes with vampires🤌 the shift from platonic feelings to a more romantic ones is so well made and I love the angst that came with that, had me kicking my feet and blushing🤭. The cover is so cute as well

Toxic lesbian vampires are my guilty pleasure 😈

A couple parts were a little messy, and the book as a whole felt a bit long. However, despite that, I still had a lot of fun reading this.

Of course my first 5 star read of the year is about yearning lesbian vampires

The way I could’ve finished this in a day but decided to drag it because I was enjoying my time so much, says something! I adore our characters so much, their chemistry and their backgrounds, leading them together was so endearing and well put together.

The Girl Who Bit Me , along with its need of a bit of editing— had humor, spice, tenderness, reeling, and enjoyment. I really can’t wait to read more of this author’s work. I mean I also wouldn’t mind a part 2☺️!

Some Highlights
”So I was a little... wound up. So my teeth enter your neck.
Oops”

"Aw, you want that so bad, don't you? You want me to call you my wife while I fill you up? While I fuck you until you lose your hearing?" she drawled, breathless. "You want to pretend to be my wife while I mark you all over? You want to repeat our vows with my fangs buried in your neck? When you come on my fingers?"

“I've always considered myself the anti-romantic, because I don't like poetry or pop music or Notting Hill or Shakespeare or the Old Testament. But I actually think I might just be overqualified in the subject. Because if romance is about finding the point in pointlessness, I found it very early, and latched on like a dog. You are the point to me, Aster. You create meaning in this big, sloppy, pointless soup”

raise your hand if you want to be called my wife while sharing blood with your 600 year old bestie and secret lover

This is easily my favorite sapphic book I’ve ever read! I fell in love with this book and the characters so fast. Each chapter is more delicious than the last. It’s a fun, spicy, yearning, dangerous, sexy adventure from the beginning to the end. You will be obsessed. It’s a MUST READ!

2.5* This is the only time you will catch me reading anything described as “spicy”, i am nothing if not a pathetic lesbian for vampires! I did enjoy this though, was very entertaining for a binge read and obviously how could i not be kicking my feet at 600 year old soulmates. However was it objectively good?? I fear not, maybe just overlook the couple spelling errors, plot holes and insane amounts of sex…..

(Just found out it was originally fanfic and you can definitely tell by the pacing loll)

1.5 stars, rounded down. My thoughts are as incoherent as this story was. It gets that extra half star because I was interested enough to not DNF and find out what happens to these 2 idiots. If it’s not obvious, this was originally a fanfic and it totally reads like one. Sometimes thats fun, like with the banter. At other times, not so much, like with the typos, and dropped plot points. We have a completely circular type of story of 2 broke vampires who were in love with each other for 500 years (but some how didn’t know) going on a multi continent murder spree to wind up…in love with each other (but now they know 🙄). Nothing is really fixed, they are still broke and terrible people. There’s a lot of blood and sex and pop culture jokes (and little substance) so if you’re into that, you’ll like this.

I think I've accidentally read my first (sapphic) romantasy book? The distinguishing feature for me from just fantasy with a romance element and romantasy is that the romance part takes the front seat in the latter, as it does here.

Honestly, some of the ideas here are really cool (such as a shapeshifting vampire whose specific interest appears to be starring in generational sitcoms over and over), but the lore is set up so shallowly here that I had a hard time following along. The vampires don't really have the standard set of powers and weaknesses, and most of them have some unique special talent (Sylvia's is the manipulation of people's minds, and Aster's is basically brutal murder), so it feels more like superheroes with some blood play thrown in. In fact, I suspect that if I enjoyed the blood play aspects more and also went into this expecting a lot of spice, I would probably turn more of a blind eye to the lack of worldbuilding.

As it stands, this is a complicated love story with a lot of sex scenes thrown in. Vampires come and go, some of the plot doesn't completely make sense, but it's all fine if you enjoy the spice and blood play aspects and appreciate the 600-year love story and the conflicts therein without too much attention to the "but what about...?" questions that pop up periodically.

TL;DR: A fun vampire romantasy for the sapphics if you want to have a nice time but don't expect the lore or worldbuilding to hold up too much, just enjoy the ride.

No, because…. What do you mean she’s been in love with her for five hundred years but can’t tell her because she’ll unconsciously erase the memories of the girl who feels the SAME WAYY????????

I was crying through that plot twist, it thralled my mind and didn’t allow me to think about anything else. This book was perfect. I absolutely love a romance that has a twist and evolves so much from the original premise.

I love Aster and I love Sylvia and their adorably funny, sadistic banter. These characters and this story will stay with me and I’ll continue to stare blankly at the wall for the next six hundred years because this story hit me like a freight train.

I LOVE this book. These two are chaotic, somehow broke despite being immortal, a little bit murdery and desperately in love with each other but can’t admit it. There’s glorious amounts of pining and yearning and it is HOT. Can’t wait for the sequel!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4.5 rounded up)
THIS 👏🏼IS👏🏼SO👏🏼GOOD

[minor spoilers, vague and/or insignificant to plot]

I was casually enjoying my time for the first 45-50% of the book, just casually eating up a vampire romance AND THEN EVERYTHING CHANGED. This book went from good to great, in what I would argue 1 chapter. Adding a layer of devastation every classic love story has. What is a sapphic romance without devastating levels of yearning.

My heart BROKE for both of them for different parts of the book. The author timed the POV changes beautifully, I was in awe. I thought it was single POV and then it wasn’t and the game changed. A reading slump has been barreling towards me at full speed for months and I keep stumbling on books to throw at the car. This is 100% one of those books. I am deep in the trenches fighting against this reading slump and this book sent me a fucking lifeline.

Are there things that weren’t perfect? Of course. The fact that Aster has OCD and is medicated for it and Sylvia having ADHD not being mentioned AT ALL until the last literally 20 pages when Aster has a reflection moment was weird. I felt we should’ve mentioned that wayyy sooner or left it out entirely. It felt a bit “oops forgot to mention this!” I am under no impression that this is going to be for everyone.

For me, I think this author did a great job of include symbolism and poetic elements into the writing without leaning into litfic territory. Those moments sneak up on you and finding those elements when I was not expecting them was such a delight. It gave those moments such power. Huge kudos to the author for that.

The last thing I’ll say is, part of this book’s advertising is that it’s spicy. So I’m not shocked about the fact there were many explicit scenes. What shocked me was the writing made it so every time they slept together it had some sort of plot meaning. EVEN IF YOU DIDN’T KNOW IT YET. Looking back, every sex scene I can recall was some sort of marker or mover of character or plot development. Which is difficult to do with this many scenes in one book, and again huge kudos to the author for that. There were multiple things about the writing that impressed me.

Criminal that the book ended that quickly. I’m so glad that the author mentioned a sequel bc trust I will be clocking in.

TLDR: Incredible reading experience. Cured my approaching reading slump.

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️(I could not tell you how many scenes but I mean spicy is used in the description/title so I mean I feel we know what we’re getting into)

Ermmm this ending ?! What do you mean I don’t get to actively READ what that infamous bite is like?? I could legitimately scream… but anywhooo🙄
This was so much fun, so funny, laughed out loud a few times at the very least there will be smiles. These two are undoubtedly happy in their dark humour and I was just honoured to be long for the ride. I am obsessed with the sheer power of Aster, and not fully understanding it till later in the book was low-key smart. It put into perspective just how hard she works to restrict that force of nature -literally- which I must say I find crazier than the Suggestion power that’s controlling Sylvia more than she would like.
This is one I would’ve hope to binge with book 2 FOR. SURE. IMMEDIATELY. I’m minor level devastated.

Loved the opening half of the book. The pining, the hijinks, spice that was really really good. Aster and Sylvia really are a perfect match for each other, and vampires that are, well, vampiric. The book isn't dark, but neither of the characters are good people.

But then, for me, it veered into territory that I wasn't so happy with, and while it made perfect plot sense, and I can understand the why of it all, it wasn't a trope that I enjoy. In amongst all of that the book continued to be enjoyable, the characters still (mostly) being themselves. The ending, though, I felt was too abrupt. It needed an extra chapter or two to flesh it out - but having said that, it is still a good read.

Okay this was a lot of fun, and totally binge-able, smutty in a great way. I was wondering a little bit where It was going because the friends became lovers pretty fast, but I really liked where It went, fun twist, that also solved some of my initial questions. This book spends a lot of time with just the two girls, not really doing that much stuff which hurts some books but not this one!

I found out after reading It that this was originally on AO3 before getting published and It made me like It even more.
