Meet Action Movie Kid, whose adventures began on YouTube and continue in his first book, a thrilling tale of the heroic acts and daring deeds that fill his day and follow him to bedtime—and beyond!
James may look like a regular boy, but in his imagination he is Action Movie Kid, defender of his own tiny universe. Monsters, aliens, and robots are no match for James’s super strength and infinite cleverness. Though his superpowers sometimes get him into trouble—especially when others can’t see the dangerous foes that prowl the school yard, and his home—you can always rely on Action Movie Kid to save the day, even if he does need his parents’ help from time to time.
PreS- Gr 2- Action Movie Kid is a hero of many disguises who goes on adventures, fights monsters, and saves the day. In real life, he is James, an imaginative little boy who genuinely wants to help others, but ends up causing them trouble instead. His tolerant parents aren't quite sure what to do with him when he does things like, converting the family car into a "rocket" car. However, when a slime monster attacks, there's only one solution, stick together. The Action Movie Family defeats the terrible and frightening goo, successfully cleaning up the mess caused by an overflowing washer. Fabbretti's dynamic compositions and animation-based style are an absolute action-packed delight. Visual references to other action heroes like the Jedi and Indiana Jones only add to the fun. While this is Action Movie Kid's first book, it is not his first adventure, James is actually a youtube sensation. Hashimoto and Richardville's digitally-altered "home" videos capture all the hilarity of their son's actions. The book, succeeds in delivering the same, and should appeal to fans of the videos, as well as new readers. While the book has an interactive component, readers expecting an interactive book (as it labels itself) may be disappointed by what is essentially a discovery layer created through augmented reality. The free Blippar app is available for both android and ios devices. VERDICT A well-balanced blend of action, humour, and family values.
This is a really great book for kids and adults who enjoy using their imagination. Action Movie Kid, aka James, is a young boy with a big imagination. His parents tell his story on YouTube with the use of their creative technical skills and now in book format with beautiful artwork by Valerio Fabbretti. James hears a strange noise and investigates it, only to find a slimy 3 eyed monster is invading his laundry room. It will take the entire Action Movie Family to tackle this one! Super fun adventure book full of beautiful twists and use of simple yet gorgeously descriptive language and clever and well done art work.
James is always off into wild adventures with his grand imagination. Sometimes he causes a big mess and even gets into a little bit trouble. But he's always ready to fight off any enemy, even the one that he finds in his basement. When he finds himself overpowered what can he do?
This book reminds me of my own boys, who at a young age could have such fun in their imaginative play. They also fought in battles and wielded light sabers. With their pillow fortresses and nerf guns at the ready, sound effects and action narratives were always hand in hand. I also really liked the ending to the book. It was good to see Mom and Dad in on the action!
I love the action movie kid series on youtube, and so do my third grade class and five year old son! I just finished reading him this book for bedtime. He really enjoyed it, laughed a lot when he saw the rocket boosters, and was fascinated from the first page to the last. When we'd finished, I asked him what score he would give, and he said five, and ordered me to go and put it on immediately. Well done, Daniel and Mandy, and many thanks to you and James for making the world a happier and more exciting place.
This is a great book to read with kids and have your kids read to you! It has fun heroes and fun drawings from the imagination of James who becomes Action Movie Kid and had to enlist the help of Action Movie Family!
Decent art and a cute story, but I have a hard time with books like this seeming to encourage kids to make a mess. The author bio makes this a cuter book.
Action Movie Kid's adventures sometimes get him in a little bit of trouble when he gets too carried away. But if the trouble is serious, Action Movie Kid (aka James) has backup.
Let's see, what can I say without spoiling the twist? Well, there's a twist. It makes the book better and funnier, even though the reasons James gets in trouble at the beginning are funny and oh-so-believable kid antics. The illustration style is bright and attractive. It should appeal to superhero fans and those who like stories about kids who accidentally get in trouble with their innocent adventures. I didn't activate the app or anything, so I can't speak to the multimedia aspects of this book, but they are there. Ok, time to talk about the .
Based on popular YouTube Action Movie Kid videos, this book follows James as he navigates his way through the day using his super powers and super imagination. Bright cartoon pages depict monsters, robots and aliens as James protects his family with the help of mom and dad. Children age’s four to eight and their parents will love pretending with James.
I'm not familiar with the Youtube video that inspired the book. As a book, it was nothing special, a young boy has a great imagination and parents who support it. The dedication pages were so long, I wondered if the book had been self-published.
Pros: encourages imagination Cons: child imagines monsters/aliens who might be scary for youngest readers; mean-spirited and dangerous behavior is actually rewarded by the parents, e.g. parents happily join in cleanup after child throws basement items and too much soap into washing machine
