For Laurie McNamara, growing up on a farm in the country had major perks: her mother cooked with vegetables from the family garden, they collected fresh eggs from the chicken coop, and absolutely everything—from ketchup to cas

This was a GoodReads ARC, edition. This is an early production draft and does not include updated internal page cross referencing. There are typos in this copy. Most of the photos are only in black and white, although they still look delicious.

It's a cook book, so I'm not sure what else to say. I love the narratives setting up the recipe introductions. I do want to start cooking more. Learning how to start from scratch does take a big change in my attitude, so I will not jump into it whole hog,

This is my kind of cookbook! The author realizes after she has children how much she is relying on processed foods when cooking for them. She decides to go back and do things from scratch the way she grew up eating. I really like that she starts the cookbook with recipes for making scratch condiments and pantry staples then gets into recipes using some of those staples and whole foods. She shows that cooking from scratch is NOT as hard and time consuming and the media would have you believe. The ...more

Being a cookbook "collector, " I own many that I intended to use, but they became collector books in my vast library of cookbooks.
"Simply Scratch" is not in that collection...
It is back to the basics of wholesome goodness which includes making pretty much everything required in a recipe (I made Catalina Dressing & Ketchup for the Ancho Chicken Chopped Salad with zesty Catalina Dressing). Sure I could have taken a short cut and just used bottled ones, but who wants to ingest Xanthan gu

First and foremost I must mention that I received this book via Goodreads giveaways.

I love to cook, especially from scratch, so this book is great for anyone who is just learning "scratch" basics or is a seasoned cook. My favorite part of this book is Laurie McNamara's suggestions for a well stocked "scratch" pantry. The recipes are a great, and creative, and give you lots of room to experiment for yourself.

I won this book through the goodreads giveaways. This is such a beautiful cookbook. I love the design and layout. I was excited to see a section dedicated to condiments and staple pantry items. Can't wait to try the Sweet Barbecue Sauce. A lot of the recipes have minimal ingredients which I definitely can appreciate. There's even a recipe for a Strawberry-Cinnamon Sugar Compound Butter. Yum!

I received this book free through the Goodreads giveaway. I tried a couple of recipes this weekend and even my picky eater liked them. I really liked the simple tips and the menu suggestions for the main items. Thanks

I found it very interesting the things that she decided to make from scratch and the things that she didn't. Ketchup from scratch but not applesauce? I'd flip that. Might have to try making cream of mushroom and cream of chicken soup from scratch, since it seems I never have it when I need it.

Great pictures, super simple recipes with easy to find ingredients, and I love that she promotes using glass storage containers.
