Having read two books about cats in libraries and a book about owls, I thought the king salmon might make for an interesting diversion. In Kings of the Yukon Adam Weymouth recounts his canoeing down the Yukon River (nearly 2,000 miles) as the means of gaining an in-depth knowledge of the king salmon. Along his journey he meets native Canadians and Alaskans, and transplants from the lower 48, who all add to his knowledge of the salmon, the indigenous cultures, the challenges of climate change, and the history of the Yukon River. Adventures still await the adventurous — and changes in cultures and climate present opportunities to pursue inquiries helping us to adapt to change.
