Being old school, I have fond memories of Anna Riva. Her oils, that is. In the early 90s, the old herb shop that soon became my regular haunt was filled with books, incense, and especially herbs. Anna RIva’s “Modern Witchcraft Spellbook” was among them. I never got the chance to read it back in the day, so I decided to indulge myself and finally give it a read.

This book was perfect when it was first published in 1973, and in some ways, it still is. Anna Riva, the pseudonym of the late Dorothy Spencer, was famous for her little gold-labeled spell oils and equally famous for the fact that those little bottle caps **always** leaked—even if they were upright.

In her “Golden Secrets of Mystic Oils” that book was primarily geared towards the use of her own oils, but this book is more generalized and provides both white and black magic spells, although some of her products do make appearances. For me, the Anna Riva books will always be classics.
