Having had my first kidney stone issue back in December 2025 and an emergency situation involving them and potential sepsis in March 2026, I am NOT a fan of the stones. No thank you!
This was a brief but very useful guide to helping reduce the chances to get new stones to have to deal with. It provides a short overview of the types of stones and what causes increased risks of them, then outlines some simple and effective steps to help prevent stones.
Definitely will be using this as a resource going forward in my now kidney-stone-involving future. *sighs*
As a lab technologist who solely crushes kidney stones (literally) for a living I found this book to have a great foundation for understanding the pathophysiology of kidney stones. This is perfect for caregivers and patients, serving as a great tool to reference or share to others. Dr. Dat provided a simple yet practical plan to follow for those who hope to prevent kidney stone formation - if you want to understand kidney stones this is the book you need!
This is a perfect read for people who have kidney stones and related kidney problems. It very informative. They have plenty of helpful solutions and tips to help try to avoid kidney stones.
This is a great guide on kidney stones. Everything is explained really well, and the author avoids using heavy medical jargon, making it easy for everyone to understand. It's comprehensive yet simple. Big applause for focusing on prevention—it’s not something you see often.
As someone who had an over 6mm stone and had to have surgery, including stent placement, I absolutely wanted to read this book ASAP. I never want to go through that again!
This book is so easy to read and it gives you guidance on how to change your daily habits to be less likely to create stones! Each chapter focuses on one area and there are even recipes as well as an example plan for you. It explains the benefits of each recommendation.
Truly important information and I think everyone should read and understand- not just those like me who have suffered from stones! When you know better, you do better.
Big thanks to netgalley for this early copy of Kidney Stone Buster. This was an easy read and very helpful for anyone (myself included) who has dealt with kidney stones (and lives in fear of subsequent attacks!). The pain is truly traumatizing and I only wish I could go back and tell my past self to steer clear of the bad habits that may have contributed to my 7 attacks and 2 surgeries within a span of 5 months (!!!). I was pregnant at the time but spent many years prior being chronically dehydrated, partially due to my nursing career. Now, I want to be proactive and avoid kidney stones to the best of my ability. That being said, it is very difficult to get 7-9 hours of sleep and live a stress free day when you have 2 young kids. Thankfully, Dr. Anthony Dat included many easy ways to avoid kidney stone formation. Something that really stuck out to me was the way he laid out attainable goals and daily checklists. For example, “indentify and reduce 1 high risk food habit,” this is so simple and doable! I am excited to give it a try.
I was familiar with a lot of this information because I recently saw a nephrologist. This book was a good reinforcement for me. There is no lofty medical jargon — super easy for everyone to read and understand!
I’ll leave on a positive note with an endearing quote from this book — “you do not need to be perfect — you just need to be aware, have small positive habits and be kind to your body.”
Solidarity to all my stone ppl out there in the world. You’re not alone 🪨
As someone born with spina bifida who has also recently survived bladder cancer, I'm definitely someone who lives within the realm of kidney stones. Unfortunately, because of my various concerns this also means a surgical procedure (rather than the usual outpatient procedure) is required to address them. In fact, I'm getting ready to have one next month.
So, as soon as I saw "Kidney Stone Buster," I knew it was a book I wanted to check out.
"Kidney Stone Buster" is a quick but engaging read, a simple and practical book exploring just how we can reduce our likelihood of experiencing kidney stones including changes in diet, habit, fluid intake, and finding nutritional balance among other methods.
For some, this is likely to be entry-level information. For others, myself included, it will include enough tidbits to make it worth a read. I was especially engaged by the recommendations around diet and pairing up certain foods. While I've always been aware of the importance of hydration, I appreciated this discussion as well.
Author Anthony Dat writes in a clear, concise, and easy to understand way and offers concrete steps one can take to reduce the likelihood of experiencing kidney stones.
Kidney Stone Buster: The Quick Guide to Prevent Stones Fast is a helpful and reassuring read. As someone who has family who has dealt with kidney stones, I truly appreciated how clear, approachable, and easy to understand the information was from start to finish. Anthony Dat does an excellent job breaking down how and why kidney stones form without overwhelming the reader or getting too technical.
What I found most valuable were the practical, realistic tips for preventing future stones, from simple dietary guidance, to realistic everyday healthy habits. Everything is explained in a straightforward way, making it a quick read that still feels informative and empowering.
If you’ve experienced kidney stones yourself or want to better understand how to avoid them, this book is a great resource. It a concise, informative, and encouraging novel that leaves you feeling more confident and better equipped to take care of your health.
Dr. Dat has written a concise and informative book to provide quick tools for controlling and preventing kidney stones. The tone is direct and understandable. The tips are presented in an accessible way. He explains the various types of kidney stones and provides easy methods to prevent or avoid them from recurring. There are key tips that everyone can do right away, and suggestions for foods to avoid. He lays out a four-week plan to improve your odds of avoiding kidney stones from forming. I especially liked that he encourages you to start over again if you slide off the plan. This was a quick read (less than an hour) of info and practical tips. Very helpful to anyone battling kidney stones.
Thank you to the author for access to an ARC on NetGalley.
This quick and practical guide to preventing kidney stones offers clear, evidence-based advice from a urologist. Alongside lifestyle tips, it breaks down the basic science behind why certain habits help reduce the risk of stones. I especially appreciated the inclusion of recipes that allow readers to immediately apply what they’ve learned, as well as a four-week plan designed to help build sustainable habits.
As a provider working in nephrology, I can see this becoming a valuable starting point for patients who need straightforward lifestyle guidance and an easy-to-reference resource they can return to again and again. Thank you to Anthony Dat for providing access to this eARC via NetGalley.
A quick read, but full of good facts, and important information! As a chronic kidney stone, Oxalates, I am always interested in anything to prevent having an attack. I do drink lots of water, and know that it is needed, but I guess I need to add more! Especially, as I begin my day. There are some really good recipes included along with ideas of what to have for each meal. I knew, but liked it is reinforced here about to much protein. I will be adding more citrus to my diet! I will be recommending this little gem to my friends! I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Anthony Dat, and was not required to give a positive review.
I myself haven't experienced an kidney stone attack, but this was a great guide to kidney stone prevention. The book was a quick read as advertised, as well as being very informative. I didn't know that there were different types of kidney stones prior to reading this book, for example. I love that the book instructs the reader to gradually introduce kidney-friendly habits over a month instead of demanding an immediate lifestyle overhaul and I also really like how it provides alternatives to foods that increase the risk of kidney stones. All in all, this is was an excellent read and I will try my best to apply what I've learned reading this book to my own life.
As someone who deals with kidney stones way too often, I was genuinely glad to see this pop up on Net Galley. I’m always looking for anything that might make the whole experience a little easier. The information here is solid and practical, and I appreciated how clear the explanations were.
It was just a much shorter read than I expected, though. I was hoping for a bit more depth or detail, so it felt more like a quick overview than a full guide. Still, it had a few useful takeaways.
This short, clear guide felt like getting advice from a knowledgeable friend who also happens to be a urologist. It finally helped me understand a long-time health issue and provided simple, actionable steps toward a kidney-friendly lifestyle. A special bonus was the inclusion of delicious, practical recipes. While it's wise to consult your own doctor (as a couple of tips may be debated), this book is an invaluable and friendly starting point. Grateful to NetGalley and the author for the eARC!
Kidney Stone Buster is a short, practical guide that explains in plain language why kidney stones form and what you can realistically change in your daily routine to help prevent them. The author’s background in urology makes the advice feel trustworthy, and the section on how oxalate levels in everyday foods directly impact stone risk was especially helpful for spotting hidden triggers in my diet.
2.5 Pocket-sized guide to managing kidney stones. Good introduction for beginners or those seeking practical tips.
I found some of the content mildly repetitive, though I understand it’s to drive the message home. I appreciated the accessibility and use of bullet points, though was hoping for a little more of the science behind the stones!
