As a Canadian, Neo's patriotic duty is to like hockey. That said, when it comes down to ice, it is not always the smoothest or most reasonable. How can you turn bumpy ice into something glorious? Check out the zamboni in this story to tell all about how to do it and stay cool while pleasing the fans. Neo asked if we can see a zamboni in person, where all the action seems to be. All that will depend on WHICH team he chooses, but that is a story for another time. ...more

I have conflicting feelings about this book.

Kate and Jim McMullan have written a series of books, dedicated to their grandson, which explain the workings of different big trucks.
This book, I'm Cool, is about a Zamboni machine.
I Stink! is about a garbage truck.
I'm Dirty! is about a backhoe loader.
Etc. etc. There are eight books so far.

The book starts off with a hockey game and the announcer talking. The Zamboni machine (who is alive and can speak) calls the announcer "Big Talker."

Everybody loves the Zamboni!

Cute instructional tale for kiddos about how our hero makes the ice nice and smooth in eighteen minutes or less. Wasn't my kind of thing, but I guess big machine fanciers will love it.

2* art
5* story

(There are precious few books about Zambonis, so thank goodness for the McMullans.) Squirt and I always stop after our swim at the rec centre to watch the Zamboni clean the ice rink. The driver smiles and waves each time he passes us, and Squirt adores everything about it. So finding a book about one was just perfect. He now knows exactly how they work and wants to drive one when he's big. A lot of fun.

This is delightful and leaves with me with one very important question: has known Zamboni enthusiast Auston Matthews been made aware of this picture book?

A look at what a zamboni does during the course of a hockey game. Though it seemed like it took too long for my tastes for this book to get going (i.e. enough with the arguing back and forth between the machine and the announcer!), once it introduced readers to the inner workings of the machine, this book really hit its stride.

Watercolor and gouache illustrations. PreK-2.

Children with a zest for all things transportation will enjoy this action-packed and brightly illustrated picture book about zamboni. I honestly can't think of another book about zamboni, so well done when it comes to filling this niche. The story is a trifle bland, but one can readily overlook that thanks to the cheerful illustrations. Recommended. ...more

I love the way this combines humor and also demonstrates how a Zamboni machine works. Great use of diagrams -- definitely incorpoarte this when kids study simple machines. Plus it would be a great one to use as a model for voice in kids' own writing.
"Shave the Ice---
And make it snow!
Level auger?
Spin snow to center.
Tall auger?
Whirl it up."

I'm not sure my little one understood the "cool" attitude of the main character here. Or any of the hockey references. Or any of the machinery pieces that were not explicitly drawn. But who cares? This is the one and only picture book ABOUT A ZAMBONI MACHINE!!!!!! Boys age 5 and under can now rest happily. ...more

Kids know what a train, car and garbage truck are, but few of them are familiar with the Zamboni and his important job on the ice rink. This one will be fun to read aloud with the voices of the sports announcer and the Zamboni.

Although there are some rough spots in the book, the McMullans do a good job trying to explain the science of the zamboni machine in as few words as possible for a younger crowd's attention. For those wanting more info, check out the nonfiction section.

From the people who brought you I'm Dirty and I stink comes the story of the Great Zamboni. The Zamboni describes how he smooths the ice at a hockey game. Great for those kids who just love machines. I think the sports commentator is rude, though. ...more
For the young hockey enthusiast. I learned something, too!

I thought this one was cute, and it's a nice idea to include a zamboni in with the big vehicle books. However, I think this title will only be popular in certain regions. ...more

Ugh. I hate hockey. It was somewhat interesting to learn how a zamboni works, though.

So my son rates this book 5 stars. I enjoy snuggling up and reading to him. Seeing as we're from Texas I don't think he's ever heard of a zamboni before. However you know, 4 years olds and trucks... It was interesting to me to understand what exactly this truck does. The attitude of the characters seemed a bit cocky for a children's book. ...more

Cute, though I found the explanation of how the Zamboni worked to be a bit confusing, which is why I gave it three stars not four. Still rather enjoyable and I think kids would like it.

I like this book because the zamboni turns to the rink surface into slick, smooth, ice.
