Prom night is said to be a magical night in the life of a high school student. For some it is a night of dreams that come true, while others would rather forget the night exists. For Bryce and Maycee it was the night that would change their lives forever.
A decade long family feud, forbidden love, and an unselfish sacrifice, make up this story that rivals a Shakespearean play.
Prom Night. A night that's supposedly a beautiful night to remember for lovers. But for little girl Maycee, this was a night she wanted to forget. For this was the night when her older sister Rylynn went mad and her boyfriend Ryker died. This was the night when her parents and Ryker's blamed each other's child misfortunes. This was the night when their families became enemies. Like the Montagues and the Capulets. Like Romeo and Juliet.
Prom Night 10 years after. Maycee didn't want to go to the dance even though she'd had lots of invites from a couple of guys. But she soon changed her mind and attended prom night. And that's when she met her Romeo. And she, was his Juliet.
They were destined to meet and fall in love. But just like the famous Shakespeare characters, they were bound to break up because of their families. Will they also meet the same fate as the lovestruck lovers?
Oh how I wish William Shakespeare possessed my body right now, so I could poetically declare how much I was enamored and captivated by Bryce and Maycee. Promises in Stone is "marshmallowsly" sweet and poetically moving.
A beautiful love story wherein you can't help but feel like you're part of their world.
A beautiful love story where two people learned to forgive, forget, wait, pursue, accept and move on.
A beautiful love story full of promises carved in stone. Amy K. McClung might as well be a descendant of Shakespeare because she was able to magnificently recreate one of the greatest love stories of all time. I couldn't help but fall in love all over again. A highly recommended read!
Promises in stone was a very heart wrenching story. It had everything in a story that I love in a book. Great characters, mystery, deception and romance. This was my first book I had read by Amy K McClung and wasn't expecting such a wonderfully emotional story that would take me on a massive roller coaster rides the story pulled at your heart strings and ended leaving you fully satisfied. This is a YA book but it handles very mature subjects like forbidden love, mental health issues, family feuds. These subjects were wrote about very sensitively by the author, but at the same time the author got the point she intended across in a way that younger people reading could understand and not be scared by reading it. The book is very much a modern day Romeo and Juliet style story which I absolutely loved. I love Romeo and Juliet so reading it in different more modern ways is always very interesting for me. The characters throughout the story were interesting and were developed well throughout the story. Bruce, Maycee and Rylynn all had their own struggles throughout the book and all their issues come back to when Rylynn attended her prom. Maycee is Rylynn's sister and was only 7 when Rylynn went to the prom that changed all their lives forever, including their parents. I don't no who my heart went out more to? Rylynn for the trauma that she's been through since prom and is now institutionalised. She's very messed up and my heart bled for her. Maycee has been the sister that has had to grow up with everything that happened "that night". She's lived her life stuck in the middle between two family feuds and knowing what happened to her sister and has always known she will never attend her own Prom because of her sister. My emotions were pulled all over the place in this book. I defiantly recommend that you had tissues at the ready for its book as it will have you crying like a baby. The story flowed at a great pace, the characters and their lives were very interesting and I could also relate to the characters with it being a YA book, but I also could see older people reading the story as the author wrote about the characters in a mature way and the author wrote about mature subjects. I defiantly think I'll be reading more from this author in the future. 4.5 Stars
This story was so beautiful. I couldn't put it down. I absolutely adore Maycee and Bryce. What a wonderful combination of personalities. The storyline was so intriguing, I wasn't sure what was going to happen next. Of course I was brought to tears, which just goes to show that a strong connection was made with these characters. Amy has done it once again! She has such an amazing talent and I have not read a book by her that I haven't fallen in love with. She is my favorite author and I am pleased to call her a friend.
A Promises in Stone by Amy McClung is a modern day Romeo and Juliet story with a twist. People say prom night is supposed to be the best night of high school and a rite of passage. A memorable event for years to come…
For Rylynn, her prom night changed her life and the life of others when she was in a terrible accident with her boyfriend Ryker. Rylynn and Ryker’s families couldn’t go back to how things used to be after that. This particular night left a very big impression on Rylynn’s little sister, Maycee. When it comes time for her prom, she has no interest in going because of what happened to Rylynn but little does she know that the events surrounding prom night have something in store for her.
This story was a beautifully touching story. I was hooked from the first few pages. I am a personal fan of Romeo and Juliet but find it refreshing when there is a different spin to it. All of the characters are likeable and relatable. They show how real love is…familial and romantic…and how those types of love make people do crazy things. I really enjoyed Bryce as a character. He was my favorite with Maycee being a close second.I absolutely loved how the story closed and was sad to see it end.
Even though Amy McClung has published several books, this is the first book I’ve read of hers. I have gladly added her to my list of authors to follow and I look forward to reading more of her work.
This is a beautifully tragic story. The perfect story for Romeo and Juliet! Well written, awesome and touching storyline, and great characters that you feel. Even the bad guys are not so bad, just hurt, loyal, and want to help. But sometimes helping means staying out of it!
Rylynn, the poor girl, really touched me, earned my respect, and made me envy Maycee. How wonderful it would be to have someone like her in your life! Jess is such a great friend and just just have to love him.
Now Maycee, such a strong, brave girl who has been through so much, yet still willing to put herself out there. I felt an instant connection with her. I'm so glad she got her HEA!
I have to admit I fell for Bryce immediately! He is so romantic, loving, loyal, sweet, funny, and mature. I have to say it would be hard to move on, or find someone who measured up to him!
It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves. William Shakespeare
Doubt thou the stars are fire, Doubt that the sun doth move. Doubt truth to be a liar, But never doubt I love. William Shakespeare
I can't imagine the pain the parents felt and hope I never can. I can understand everything that happened and their feelings.
***I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the author.***
So this story was very simple and cute, and I liked that. It was nice to see the evolution of Maycee and Rylynn together as a family.
Most of the time it was so frustrating as a reader to read about how these families are feuding but I'm sure if god forbid I was ever in that type situation it would of course be different so I can't fault them too much, it was just extremely annoying how they were so negative towards the other, especially when they had such history.
Bryce was a great character for Maycee and Rylynn. He was the "perfect" guy. :)
Because this was such a short story, sometimes I have trouble with pacing, and this book was no exception. Sometimes I felt it would jump a little from scene to scene and although it didn't take away overall from the feelings or story, I feel like some parts should have been savored and enjoyed a little more. Additionally for this reason, I also felt like some parts were left out and left to the imagination because we were trying so quickly to get somewhere else.
Critique aside, it was a cute, goodhearted story and I enjoyed it. 3 stars.
What a great read by Amy McClung!! This book had me on such an emotional roller coaster ride, that I did not want to get off.
This is a YA/NA romance that will leave you breathless. It was so heartrenching and thought provoking. It had triumps and heart ache, deception and hope, Romance and Forgiveness. I went threw 10 kleenexs for all the tears I shed.
The storyline was great, the characters were so easy to fall in love with and the descriptions to detail sucked you right in where you could easily visualize everything that was happening.
This is one story that I will read over again and again.....it's just that good.
So break out the Kleenexs, I promise you are going to need them.

This book was one of those stories that will stay with me forever. It is heartfelt, beautiful, and will touch you. There are so many issues touched on in this story and each one was handled beautifully and respectfully. The characters were so well written and interwoven that you feel yourself getting to know them. Maycee and Bryce are two teenagers who bump into each other and at first don't remember the past they both share. Add in their parents and you have a modern day Shakespearean story which rivals Romeo and Juliet. This story exudes love of family, romantic love, and moving on. I found myself crying during parts of this and smiling through others. There were some very sad scenes but even those were written with love shining through. I would love to read more about this couple and their families.
Promises in Stone is truly a great, wonderful book. In a way, it is like Romeo and Juliet. I absolutely LOVED it! I fell in love with Maycee and Bryce from the beginning. It held my attention the entire time I read it, which was about two hours. I tried to put it down to sleep and couldn’t sleep until I read more. That “more” turned into the rest of the book. The ending was probably one of my favorite parts of the story, even though it is hard to just pick one part that was the best as the entire book was amazing. It is rare for me to actually cry when there is an HEA, but apparently not this time. Amy McClung’s books are some of the best books I’ve ever picked up. I totally recommend reading this fantastic book, along with all of her books.
I really thought this book had a lot of potential. To me it was written in a way that I would expect from a first time author. Things were skimmed over and a lot of the story wasn't as well developed as I would have liked. I definitely enjoyed the idea of the story. There is a lot of potential for this to have been a great story! I just wish there had been more details in the descriptions.
Editing is a huge thing to me!! I dropped a star due to editing alone!! I can over look a few minor errors, but there were spots where words were missing or it seemed the the author changed the wording of a sentence but didn't take out the original wording.
Overall, I give this 3-3.5 stars because of the storyline. It was an enjoyable read, just not a very deep read.
Promises in stone is a YA book. Think modern day Romeo & Juliet. This was my first book by the author. I am a fan now! She did a beautiful job weaving the magic of real life and problems into a heart wrenching, gripping, and intriguing way! This story has a little of everything all while being exceptional!
Rylynn is a mess ever since her prom night! I want to reach in and grab this girl and make it all better. Maycee is her little sister who was only 7 at the time of the incident. She had had to grow up in the shadow of what happened.
This will leave you with your emotions all over the place but it is well worth it!
Enchanting read. One tragic night destroys two families and rips them apart. Can they learn to heal and forgive? Maycee living in her sister past has not been easy, the night of her prom night changed her life as well but not in the tragic way it did her sisters. Who knew marshmallows would turn out so romantic. Maycee meets Bryce again but not everyone can move from the past tragedy. I loved reading this book. Great characters and shows that just because we lose our first love does not mean we cannot move on. I would recommend this book and all of Amy's books. I love them all.
Promises in Stone is such an amazing book, definitely a modern day Romeo and Juliet. I felt it was very well written and the descriptions were so detailed it was easy to picture the scenes. I fell in love with the characters right from the start and could not put this down. This was such a heart-gripping story that had my emotions all over the place and an ending that warms and fills your heart with joy. I’ll always think of this book when I see marshmallows. Do I recommend this book: Definitely! Will I read more from Amy K McClung: Absolutely!
This book just leaves you with a good warm heart, feeling good. Maycee and Bryce share a heartache, not only the loss of Bryce's brother, the mental loss or Maycee's sister, but also a splitting of a lifetime family friendship. I just loved this story. Not only Maycee and Bryce, but Rhylnn also and quirky Jess. The story sucks you in hoping for the HEA. Wondering how the families will handle the two young loves together. Great plot, great characters and great writing make for a very enjoyable short read.
I received a copy for an honest review. Where can I start with this? It was absolutely amazing, and heart wrenching, and a little funny. I laughed and cried and had a huge smile through the whole book. I loved every second of this story and I never wanted it to end. Bryce and Maycee are amazing people and deserved everything. Thank you so much for writing this story.
When it's true love and you know it...time and distance will never make you forget it. Not even tragedy. Or a promise to a father...to stay away for four years!
This was incredible even with tragic happenings. Maycee and Bryce are today's Romeo and Juliet. These two amazing people shows us how love will previal all even when obstacles are in the way. Quite enjoyable.
