Book Review: Ten Happy Dogs: A Counting Adventure from 1–10 by Lili Chin
Rating: ★★★★☆
This is such a cheerful little counting book! It follows one happy dog through a full day of fun, from morning adventures to winding down at bedtime. Along the way, more playful pups join the group until there are ten dogs altogether. They race along the beach, get delightfully muddy, play together, and eventually settle in for some cozy rest.
Lili Chin’s illustrations are the real highlight for me. The dogs are absolutely adorable, and there are plenty of amusing details for children to notice. Kids can practice counting while also looking back through the pages to recognize dogs they’ve already seen and spot the newest one added to the pack. It makes the learning feel more like a game than a lesson.
The cover immediately caught my attention because it’s so bright, charming, and inviting. This would make a lovely addition to a child’s bookshelf, especially for young readers who adore dogs and are beginning to learn their numbers. I also appreciate that it combines an engaging story with early learning skills in a very accessible board-book format.
Overall, this is a sweet, playful choice for toddlers and preschoolers—and a fun pick for dog-loving families. Fans may also enjoy Lili Chin’s companion book, ABC Dogs.

June 1, 2026I received this one from the publisher on Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
The second of the two doggy books I got from Netgalley. I just couldn’t resist when I saw these two books on Netgalley, I am a big doggy fan and I just love it when they are featured in books! I was curious what kind of fun counting stuff we would get with dogs and I can promise you, it was adorable!
In this one we are counting UP! We start with 1 happy dog that goes on a walk, and from then on we see that dog get more and more friends with each new activity! From going to the beach (which my dog also ADORES, though we are sadly not going that often) to barking at everything to “helping” with gardening to the last one which is the cutest of them all. I really liked that this one didn’t just go for different dogs each page (like 2 dogs do x and then the next is 3 different dogs do x), but instead started with one dog and then collect more dogs as the story went on that also stayed around and had fun with the first dog. It makes for a fun reading experience as you can ask your kids if they recognise which doggo was added and if they know the breed. I also loved seeing what the dogs got up to, there are lots of fun things to be seen on each picture, especially as the number of dogs grow. Like do you see what the whippet and beagle are barking at on the 7th number. Or what the dogs are doing on the 9th one. I just loved each moment of this book and I wanted to dive into the book to pet all these good boys and girls.
Just like with the ABC Dogs book the art was incredibly cute and adorable and I loved seeing the various dogs in this illustrator’s style.
All in all, a perfect little counting book perfect for the little ones, and dog lovers like me! I would recommend it~

If my kids could leave their own review, this would be a solid 10, they can both count to ten now, no notes, mission accomplished. On a more serious note, there is genuinely no bad word to say about this one. The illustrations are so vivid and colorful, and even though it's "just" a counting book, there's still an actual story pulling you along, not just numbers slapped onto random pages. We've reread this one more times than I can count at this point, and every single time we spot something new, a little lizard, a butterfly, some tiny detail tucked in the corner we somehow missed the last five times. An easy, easy favorite around here.
Disclaimer: I got this book as an ARC (thanks to the author, publisher, and everyone else involved for this chance), and this review is 100% my own honest thoughts, written because I wanted to, chaos included, as usual.

This is a great little learn to count book with wonderful, colorful illustrations. Little ones will delight in the antics of the dogs as they go to the park, the beach and cavort in their yards with fallen leaves.
What I like about this one is the color - so vibrant and inviting. There was also a lot of attention to details on the page with butterflies, lizards and crabs on the beach. On each page you meet another dog until the final page when they are all at home in their snug little beds.
There are so many counting books out there but this one will be great for dog lovers and a good addition to any toddler's library.

Is there anything better than a happy dog to make a human smile? Ten happy dogs, of course! Ten Happy Dogs, a Counting Adventure from 1-10 by Lili Chin, is a bright coloured, beautifully illustrated, and lyrical book with a wide range of breeds of dogs and their fun activities.
Before you know it, your toddler will have memorized the script, picked out their favourite canine, and asking you to read it over and over. I highly recommend this fun counting book for families of youngsters.
Thank you for the ARC of #TenHappyDogs to the publisher and #NetGalley.

This is a cute and simple read for young learners to learn their numbers. I'm a dog person so I gravitated towards this versus of it was about cats 😂
The graphics are so good, I enjoyed them. My kids and I read a different book for counting before that had the same premise essentially, but all the numbers had nothing to do with a specific theme and made no sense. So with that being said, this book makes sense, is cute and easy to get through quickly with a young child.

This was such a sweet little counting book! There isn’t a ton to the story, but honestly, that’s exactly what made it perfect for Sofi. It keeps things simple with adorable illustrations of little doggies while introducing counting in a way that’s easy for little ones to follow.
I love books like this at her age because they make learning feel natural without trying to do too much.

A quick and delightful read from Lili Chin. She makes a great job of writing simple but catchy text with cute and engaging illustrations. For sure kids, (like my daughter) will definitely love this one. If you like her book "ABC Dogs", consider this one too because you wont be disappointed.

So adorable and fun! This is the kind of book that my daughter loved because she could easily learn it. The dogs are so active and it was fun finding and counting them.

I absolutely loved this book! It has everything: catchy rhyme, colorful artwork, and cute dogs! The writing is simple and clean - something a child can understand and enjoy when learning to count to 10. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a small child.
