My Time Well Spent: A Story of Resilience

Rate this book
I am Darren Frey, 44, and have spent my entire life going blind from retinitis pigmentosa. I have withstood tremendous physical, mental, and sexual abuse, my father’s suicide, and mother’s abandonment. That was only the beginning

When the shocking conclusion to a long-term relationship nearly cost me my life, I was beckoned to Las Vegas, where I began a brutal journey of self-discovery using psychedelic medicine—forcing myself to face the demons clawing at my past. What I uncovered was more than just healing. It was transformation.

My Time Well Spent sheds light on how a traumatic childhood and disability can shape one’s life and relationships. It not only offers a survivor’s story but adventure and culture, social insight, raw emotion and hope for anyone walking a similar path and seeking understanding. The world needs that right now, don’t you think?

This was wonderful to read. An amazing tale of resilience and survival! A deep read but well worth it if you like your memoirs gritty and real not light and fluffy

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I sat down to read this book because it deals with a lot of heavy issues some people probably can’t handle reading, but as I got further into the book I realized the grace and resilience the author, Darren Frey has shown in being so vulnerable between the covers of this book. He holds nothing back and I got to follow him through every ugly part of his journey leading to his happy ending. And boy, am I glad there was a happy ending! This is a book for people to read who are survivors or are going through trauma of their own. It sends a message of hope that things will turn around and you can come out the other side.

I have know Darren Frey since 4th grade and we both grew up in the same town and went to the same high school. I am mentioned briefly in the book. We were not super close growing up and I had to idea he was going through the terrible things he described in this book. I know he has had many challenges he has had to overcome in his life and this books tells the story of how he did it. It is a true story of resilience and candor as he searches for meaning and understanding of how human beings can be so cruel. It is a book that will hopefully inspire you or motivate you in some way. Darren shows that life can be bad for a long time and sometimes things get really bad before they get good. I wish that he did not have to go through what he did and I wish I was a better friend to him when we were younger but hindsight is always a sharp dagger. I implore you to read and contemplate on what Mr. Frey has written and the journey he went through to understand his own being. I hope that with this book you can realize that if he can survive what he did and come out the other side then so can you. Great book from a great person. -Matt O'Quin

Wow - this personal trip is so worth reading. Every step of his life. Always wondering how the hell he got through it. But he did. Highly recommended.

Both my wife and I know the author. This was a brutally honest and compelling memoir that Darren has crafted here, gripping you to the point where we read the entire book in only a few days. We had no idea what Darren's life truly entailed and what immense struggles he faced head on and ultimately overcome. The majority of readers tend to gravitate to the memoirs of celebrities but we implore you to take a look at the one, it is definitely worth the read and will enthrall you and inspire you.

A well-written, deeply personal and emotional story of overcoming abuse and learning lessons. The author takes us on a journey in search of meaning and reason in a harsh reality. Most notably, he takes accountability for his mistakes while questioning everything that caused them. Highly recommended!

A harrowing story but one that has heart. Darren's life has been rough from the get-go, but he paints a vivid picture of his past. This isn't a sob story;, it is a memoir. One of resilience, fortitude and one that is tough to read at times due to the true nature of the content. A must-read for anyone looking for inspiration on how to be more resilient in life.
