Richard Diaz is not a best-selling author, but writing is not his strength. His strength is analyzing and thinking outside the box. I love Richard's unorthodox ideas. Can you believe running slower and counting heart beats over miles could make you faster in the long run? That's one of his tenets. Can’t wait to try the training plans he provides for both different race distances and for various athlete levels. He also gives info on strength training, runner nutrition, and injury prevention. There are a couple of contradictions in the book, as well as a few places that get lost in the weeds with some head-spinning technical jargon, but the proof will be the pudding. I hope to give his training plans a year and will update accordingly after that.

This is a really good book on performance development for runners -- especially amateur, but serious, athletes like myself!

The theories, science, and real-life application experience is solid and the professional experience of Mr. Diaz round out a credibility that is refreshing and reliable.

The book is organized in a confusing manner, in my opinion, and while its attempted to be a "building block" design, it ends up being kind of muddled. I think it would do better to have it professionally edited and publish a new edition. However, criticism of the book's structure notwithstanding, this is a great book to help develop better overall running performance by anyone willing to apply the program(s).

Definitely a "must-read" for any runner or running coach!
