Illus. in full color. James is sitting alone having tea and macaroons in the parlor of his great-aunt's Gothic mansion when a bear shows up. There aren't enough macaroons to go around, so James and his new friend set out to look for more. A wicked mouse king and a host of other creatures spring to life from the mansion's furnishings and artwork--all in pursuit of James and the bear.
This colorful picture book is about a young boy, James, who visits his aunt. He gets sad when he does not get a tour of the house, but when the bear comes along, James gets into some trouble with the bear after deciding to look for macaroons. The illustrations in the book are wonderful, very colorful and detailed. I would, therefore, use this book to show students that their illustrations can do most of the talking, but the words can help the illustrations talk.
This is a perfect picture book. All kinds of hidden things to find, well invented not-to-scary monsters, a very calm rescue/denoument. It's beautiful and I love it.
