A Crown So Cruel is a richly imagined high‑fantasy adventure that leans heavily into expansive world‑building, dragon lore, and action‑driven conflict.
Megan Montero clearly put a great deal of care into crafting a detailed setting, and readers who love immersive landscapes, political tension, and combat‑forward storytelling will likely find a lot to appreciate here.
For me personally, this one was a bit harder to stay engaged with. It very well could have been my mood and mindset at the time I started the book. While the world itself is vivid, I found myself wanting a deeper emotional connection to the characters and more internal development to anchor me in their journeys. That’s very much a matter of personal reading preference — I tend to gravitate toward character‑driven fantasy with strong emotional arcs, so this may simply not have aligned with the mood I was in when I picked it up.
Because of that, I’m open to revisiting it in the future when I’m craving something more epic and plot‑focused. I can absolutely see this resonating with readers who prioritize intricate world‑building, dragons, and high‑stakes action above all else.

This was a new to me author and I was wanting it to be good but wow! It was really great! I really want to read more by this author.
What went right:
Sorsha is everything I love about an FMC. She was flawed but loyal, strong but emotionally complex, and she has a dragon! I mean hello! Who doesn’t want a dragon?? I really loved their relationship and enjoyed seeing their witty conversations and how they fought for each other. As the relationship with the MMC starts developing her dragon, Beren, is so hilariously ready to burn him.
Sorsha was exiled as a child for a mistake. This caused her to be banished and move from a comfy titled life to that of a banished one in the wilds. There she learned to fight and live on her own the hardest way possible.
The MMC is Venix and he was her past crush and now the high lord from the land that banished her. He needs her for something but as they work together his feelings reveal themselves once more. I think their relationship was well developed and I like the touch her and ☠️ vibes from him.
What I wanted more of:
The magic system was fun but i feel like it wasn’t fully explored. I would have liked more in depth information on it and what each zodiac typically inherits, or is it random?
The past was not explored enough. I liked our MCs current relationship and how it was hard won but we have some unanswered questions… why did he tell his father on her if he hated him? Why did he wait to come look for her? What made the sister finally call off the betrothal? What does it mean to be stars crossed fated mates(I swear it was only mentioned once and that was when it happened)?
The ending felt very abrupt! I’m also confused on what happened with the council. I wish there would have been more after they were bathed in light with random tattoos placed on them.
For these reasons I lowered my rating.
I very much liked this book. I’m definitely going to continue the series and hope that we cover more info in the next book. Honestly, this wasn’t a short book and the story was interesting and kept my attention so maybe I just wanted a bigger book haha.

Thank you to The Author Agency and the author for an ARC of this book. I genuinely devoured this book. This was my first book by the author and honestly, I can’t wait to read more of her books especially the books in this series!! This is the first book in the series. It seems like it’s an interconnected standalone series, but for the best experience read them all in order. I absolutely loved Sorsha and vixen as our main characters. It was kind of sad to get to the end of this book and realize that their main story was over and that will potentially see them in other books. I could’ve had more of them. It was great especially because at the start vixen was getting on my nerves a little bit, but he had some growth and he became likable. I always loved my girl Sorsha from the jump. Honestly, that big reveal that happened at the end…I knew something was going on. I just didn’t know that was it and I loved that little twist. I think I know where that’s gonna go in the next book. All of that will make sense once you read the book but honestly, I couldn’t put this book down. I was speed reading through it because I just wanted to know what was going to happen next!! This has dragons, magic and fae and you’ll just get enamored with the world! I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next in this world.

Is fire daddy a thing? Because Venix is definitely a fire daddy. Well, this was my first 5 star read of the year, and oh my god was it good!!! Thank you to Megan Montero and The Author Agency for gifting me this ARC. A Crown So Cruel is a triple POV fantasy and is the first book in the War of the Zodiacs series. It follows Sorsha, Venix, and Astos as they try to survive against the odds.
I was swept up in the world. The world building was on point. The dragon scenes made me feel like I was right there with the characters. I loved Sorsha's strength, especially after all she had been through, and watching her become the fierce warrior she is was great. I love being tortured by a slow burn, so I wish this one lasted a little longer, but it was so satisfying in the end. While there wasn't lots of spice, what was there was perfect.
I was submerged deep in this world, and I can't wait to find out what happens next!

Sorsha and Venix made me want to smack some sense into them sometimes, but it was a true enemies to lovers slow burn. Which is impressive with all that fire.
Love this branch of Romantasy from Megan and cannot wait for more to come.

This book is so, so good, the kind of fantasy that completely consumes you and leaves you struggling to put your feelings into words. If you love fae, dragons, elemental magic, and intense emotion, do yourself a favor and read this. You won’t be sorry.

Sorsha was banished as a child from the Court of Fire for her role in the Great Burning and has survived ever since in the Expanse, living in caves with her dragon, Berenice (Beren). Her bond with Beren is beautiful, fierce, and unbreakable. Apart from her dragon, her only true connection is her friend Astos, until everything changes.

AMAZING… AMAZING… AMAZING!! I literally just finished A Crown So Cruel and omg I could put this book down for even one second. I was constantly on the edge of my seat waiting to see what was going to happen next. And if that’s not enough then the slow burn, enemies to lovers romance full of banter, yearning, and chemistry sparked right off the page. Oh and let’s not forget the DRAGONS! This book is an absolute must read for any Romantasy fans and one I highly recommend adding to your TBR now!
This one was stunning from beginning to end, if you love a book that is character driven then I highly recommend immediately adding this one to your TBR, because you will not want to miss out on Sorsha and Venix journey. Sorsha is riled by the house of Leo but has been banished from her home for a mistake she made as a child… but Sorsha is nothing is not resourceful and willing to adapt and overcome. When an attack at her new home goes wrong though she’s thrown back into a world she wished never to be apart of again. And while the memories of where she use to call home grip tightly to Sorsha she’s not willing to forgive and forget… but she’s not willing to let her people down either. Honestly I just loved Sorsha she is smart, fierce, loyal, and when she loves she loves hard and forever. Not to mention she’s hilarious, and the banter between her and Venix… and everyone else is top notch. As for Venix, it took me a minute to really fall for our MMC, I liked him but his attitude was a bit to I’m better than you for me. But once we started to get to know him and see who he was under the High Lord mask I really liked his character. It was clear all he wanted was to protect his land, his people, and those that he loved to the best of his ability without making the same mistakes as the ones who had ruled before him. And together… together Venix and Sorsha’s romance leapt right off the page! Yes it was an absolute slow-burn full of longing, yearning, and learning to trust the feelings in your heart, but oh boy was it worth it. And if all of that doesn’t sell you, I mean a beautifully written book full of amazing characters, fantastic romance, and plenty of on the edge of your seat moments that’ll leave you wanting book two immediately then let me also mention that you will absolutely love every single dragon in this book! Because as much as I love Sorsha and Venix the dragons were probably my absolute favorite! Great world building…. and DRAGONS!
I am a huge fan of Megan and love all of her books but this one is taking it to a new level! I love the lore she has come up with and the world building is amazing. It’s basically all your *favorite* fantasy concepts - fae, elemental courts, dragons- but in a unique way. I really enjoyed how the different fae of a specific court have different types of power- like the fire fae don’t just throw fire, it’s more interesting and detailed with each fae able to do different aspects of fire magic (ex. lava vs smoke vs fire). Even the dragons of each court are unique - they don’t all spew fire! The water dragons have different spewing! So cool. I also love how Sorsha has her own special unique power! The enemy to lovers plot is not too enemy driven, which made things flow and come together. I can’t wait for the next book!

I enjoyed this so much. A Crown So Cruel pulled me in with its fae courts, zodiac magic, dragons, and the tension between past lovers turned enemies. The worldbuilding was immersive without feeling overwhelming, and the stakes felt real as the courts began to fracture.

First off, the WORLD BUILDING!! Megan Montero has a way with words, and throughout the whole book, I felt like I was actually there.
This romantasy needs to be at the top of your TBR because it will not disappoint.
There is so much tension, power, betrayal, action, suspense and a tad bit of spice to capture you right from the start and keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last line. This book made adulting a nightmare because I did not want to put it down.

Omg, this book was so good! The world building was exquisite! The characters were so well written that I could see them in my mind. The description overall was just amazing. This was like a fun romantasy in my head as I read this book. I enjoyed the story. The adventure and action. The main characters were a lot of fun. This book held my interest easily as it flowed really well and I wanted to know what was going to happen at every turn.

Ok this has been my favorite read of the year so far! It’s only been one month but this is the 11th book I’ve read and so far my favorite. There’s dragons - which means dragon riders, dragon politics, dragon battles, dragon humor! There characters are entertaining and so easy to like. Sorsha gives Aelin Galathinius vibes (imagine if she was in Manon’s coven and you get Sorsha!!! Literally a badass!) and Venix is the ULTIMATE touch her and die fae male. I love how Beren and Venix don’t get along because it means Sorsha will always be well taken care of!
Anyway, the story flows great, there’s are twists and turns and family secrets and zodiac politics and Celestials and missing friends and elemental magic and all the perfect blend of things to make a really good story. If you’re looking for a dragon read, here it is!

This book was so good. This was my first book by this author and I am not disappointed. There is so much action and tension. The many twist and turns has you flipping through the pages. The world building is phenomenal I loved that I could imagine everything. Baren is a dragon so naturally he’s my favorite. He’s such a fierce protector. I loved Baren and Sorsha’s relationship. I absolutely loved Sorsha. She was such a strong, bada**, and sassy FMC. I loved watching her become a warrior. It took me some time to warm up to Venix our MMC but as his character grew I slowly began to love him. Cal was another favorite her sassy give no f*cks attitude was my favorite. The dragon scene was intense and had me sitting on the edge of my seat. This is a slow burn enemies to lovers where you can just feel the yearning and chemistry. I can’t wait for the next book to see where this world takes us.

I really enjoyed immersing myself in this new world, the court intricacies, the zodiac based powers and houses. The world-building felt organic and not overpowering, with different plot threads being developed at once. The romance is a subplot, and while there's a tiny bit of spice, this is most definitely a plot heavy read. It was a refreshing change from romance centered fantasy, and I really loved it.
Since this is book 1 in a series, there are a lot of open threads, and I can't wait to see how the story will evolve from here.

When I originally heard about this book, I was extremely excited because it was described as having so many of my favorite plot elements. Dragons? Absolutely some of my favorite magical creatures. Fae warriors with a snarky female main character? Where do I sign up because that is one of my favorite character archetypes.
Yet, when I actually read this book, it did disappoint me quite a bit. The plot was a letdown, in my opinion. Even when I was halfway into the book I felt as if all I knew about the characters was their names, a bit of physical description, and that was it. At halfway through a nearly 450 page book, I had no idea what the characters’ pasts were, what they were motivated by, or why everyone in the court seemed to hate Sorscha so much. It all came together within the last forty pages, but I sincerely wished the character building and plot devices would have been introduced way, way earlier into the book. Furthermore, Astos seemed to be forgotten about entirely as a character and we never received a resolution on what happened to him despite Sorscha constantly claiming to be worried about him.
Another element I really wished we got more of in this book was the worldbuilding. There was not much explanation given as to how the dragons grew to live in the Hive and why they are so revered but feared, which I very much wanted some backstory on Berens and Sorscha’s dynamic in particular. Some of the time skips also seemed oddly placed, such as during the meeting with the Solaris Council ending on a major plot point, starting a new chapter with two of the characters in bed together. I did almost DNF this book quite a few times, but the found family between the characters, the intrigue of hopefully discovering more about the dragons, and wanting to learn more about the characters kept me motivated enough to finish.
I did absolutely enjoy the last 25% of the book more than the beginning 75% and wished the book had more of the elements of that section. My rating would have most likely been higher, as that 25% raised my rating by half a star. I’m overall giving this book 2.5 stars because I was missing quite a few crucial details such as character development/motivations, worldbuilding, and I wanted to know more about what happened to Venix’s father during the Solaris Council. I will not be continuing on in this series, unfortunately.

Megan Montero delivers exactly what I want in a fantasy: a truly strong FMC. Sorsha isn’t underestimated or weak waiting to prove herself; she’s already smart, capable, and unapologetically powerful. It was refreshing to read about a bada** heroine who fully owns her strength.
The bond between Sorsha and her dragon, Berenice, is one of my favorite parts of the story. Their love and loyalty to each other are undeniable, and I appreciated how much emphasis the book placed on their connection. They would do anything for one another, and it shows on every page.
I also loved watching Sorsha and Venix slowly give in to the pull between them. Seeing them recognize each other’s strengths and flaws made their connection feel earned. Especially knowing the pain that comes with wanting something they believe they can never have.
Also the side characters all have amazing personalities and contribute so much to the plot! I loved reading all of their interactions and enjoyed the diversity of their personalities.
I did get lost every now and then with the world building, but that happens a lot in the first installment of a series. I got the hang of it halfway through and still enjoyed the story leading up to that point. The ending felt a bit abrupt. I enjoyed it, but I honestly had to double-check that I’d reached the end of the book. This is amazing start to a new series and I can’t wait for the next book and see where the story takes us,

This book. MEGAN! I flew through this one and as a romantasy girlie myself, we get a new world/background.. like ZODIAC SIGNS!?! I love it so much.
Sorsha, our FMC, is my favorite type of character written. She’s sassy, unhinged, and does exactly what she wants. I was laughing at all her snarky remarks the entire book, she’s a badass. Venix, our MMC, is the type that’s a slow burn. You start off literally hating him and then slowly you realize there’s some character development to come and fall in love. AND THE DRAGONS!! Obsessed.
Also I love Megan’s writing, it’s actually my first book I’ve read of hers but I love the imagery and the world she built. This book is better than Fourth Wing, more interesting and dynamic than any other dragon fae book I've ever read. I truly cannot wait to read more books by this author.

The dragons were special, the magic unique from other stories I've read, and the dangers and plot thicker than blood.

A Crow so cruel completely swept me off my feet. From the very first chapter the world building pulled me straight into this magic soaked atmosphere, I felt in the expanse and I felt I was walking through the market.
Sorsha it’s an absolute force, well rounded, strong and doesn’t hide what she thinks or feels, she stands up for herself even when she feels the guilt of her past, she refuses to let anyone diminish her. She is resilient with a sharp sense of self. Beren was my absolute favourite character he brings spark and wisdom to difficult situations. He adds depth and emotional weight to the narrative.
Overall a Crown so Cruel is a nice blend of strong characters but flawed, a gripping plot and it leaves you wanting to see more of where this is going. I believe this is best Megan’s book yet

It was so different from what Megan Monterro usually writes, but it was chef’s kiss perfection.
Venix is my new favorite book boyfriend. He’s stubborn, intense, and impossible not to love.
Sorsha is amazing — a total kick-ass FMC who’s afraid of nothing and faces everything with a smirk on her face.
Together, these two are a force to be feared, and I love them so much!
Beren, with all of his sass, was a perfect addition and made me cackle.
There’s just the right amount of action and twists, so it never feels overwhelming.
"The stars are never kind… but they are wise."
I highly recommend this book if you love action, dragons, a touching love story, and epic fantasy vibes.

First thing I can definitely see this book being a tv show that I would watch, the storytelling was so vivid and so descriptive that it sucks you right into the story and you will not want to leave. Reminds me of Game of Thrones mixed with House of Dragons and I’m here for it.
Sorsha is my favorite she speaks to dragons and has a badass dragon Beren. She was banished from her home as a child and had to live in the streets. I love how she progresses through the book and starts to have a voice and stands up for herself not letting people push her around. We meet Venix when he kidnaps Sorsha and takes her back to Firahs he wants to persuade her into helping him make a dragon army in return he will lift her banishment and she can be free to come and go.
She hates him at first and he as well does not like her, the tension between them builds slowly and it takes awhile for Venix to start to have feelings for her and he realizes she is the bravest female he’s ever met enemies to lovers done perfectly.
We are introduced to Celestromancers these are faes who are possessed and have no souls they are building an army of them and I would love to know more about them and hopefully as the series continues we can get their story line.
There is so much you learn in this book I am truly invested and can’t wait to keep reading

Sorsha + Venix.
A Crown So Cruel is going to be the next big fantasy series I can feel it. This is a stand alone but is part of the War of the Zodiacs series. Megan Montero does an excellent job with the world building to start it off. Sorsha is our FMC and Venix is our MMC. Sorsha is our fierce, loyal, and smart. Off the rip I wasn't really feeling our MMC but hey, he grew on me throughout the book.
Please bare in mind that ACSC is slow burn so NO these two characters are not jumping into the sheets right off the rip. The feelings grow over time and trust me it is WORTH the wait. & honestly, when characters are forced to work together the romance just seems to sear off the page.

Off the rip I wasn't really feeling our MMC but hey, he grew on me throughout the book.
Please bare in mind that ACSC is slow burn so NO these two characters are not jumping into the sheets right off the rip. The feelings grow over time and trust me it is WORTH the wait. & honestly, when characters are forced to work together the romance just seems to sear off the page.
