Punk was created for the malcontents, something that loner and aspiring drummer Hallie understands all too well. Trapped in a boring suburban life – dysfunctional parents included! – Hallie drowns her angst in the angry songs of Haze, a masked musician who has not been heard from in five years. So naturally she’s surprised – and more than a little skeptical – when someone ...more

I was lucky enough to beta read this page-turning debut. It's a gritty, realistic YA that doesn't fit neatly into a genre and I love that! PLACID GIRL is a thriller/mystery, with deeply drawn, unique characters in a world of punk rock. Add stellar writing to that combo and you've got one helluva gripping story. And THAT ENDING!

Right from the start, the staccato prose of Placid Girl is almost an assault on the senses. Part mystery, part social commentary the work combines two contemporary issues: social media and hero worship.

Hallie, aka Placid Girl, is a drummer in a band. She’s timid, gripped by stage fright, and over shadowed by her more confident friend, Sarah. Obsessed with a mysterious musician, Haze, who is reclusive and been missing for years, Hallie’s chance meeting with a blogger sets

I just want to start off by saying that this will probably be up there on my favorites list. This story, is... Wonderful, intense, and beautifully strange. Truthfully when seeing the cover I wasn't all that excited, but the synopsis left me feeling a bit curious so this wasn't a cover shop for me, which being honest over here I do quite a bit. The characters were relatable angsty teens, the setting was exciting and I was hooked lined and page turning from

I received an e ARC copy of Placid Girl from All Age Press via Net Galley, in exchange with an honest review.

One of the most thrilling books that I have ever read ! The author will keep you on your toes with every page you turn.

You know how sometimes a chapter begins with a classical quote; well this one begins with a lyrics from one of Haze's songs. I wish Haze was a real artist. You know what, scratch that ! I just wish that both albums existed in real life.

Brenna will make you experience the

Oh, where to start on this awesome rollercoaster ride of a read. Ok, so, it's not just a rock/punk/musician book, it's not just a YA romance, it's a suspenseful drama filled thrill ride. Hallie is a teenage girl and a drummer, a damn good one. But she's also a total fangirl about a particular local punk band, called Haze. They're from her hometown but only put out one record, her absolute favorite record. Then they fell off the

5 mysterious rocking stars, with a bit of a Pretty Little Liars feel. (FYI: I hate comparing stories. No, if you like this, you’ll love that BS. I’m just stating the heart-pound, ‘wtf is going on?’ felt similar to how PLL made me feel)

In case anyone is curious, I’m typing this review at intervals while reading. Currently I’m at 28%.

I was provided with an e-ARC of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to All Ages Press for letting me read this!

I first heard about this book from Kacie (Kacie's Bookshelf) when I readher review and I knew I had to read Placid Girl ASAP. The premise sounded so cool and different from everything I've ever read, and since it's quite short, I knew I'd fly through it. I was very curious to see how Brenna Ehrlich made this whole romance between a famous singer and his

I first heard about Placid Girl when I received a publicist review request. Initially I didn't accept the request even though it sounded like kind of book I would LOVE. I'd committed to too many reviews lately and I'd read a lot of books about musicians. (I have a weakness for them.) It was after I read some high praise blurbs and a few more promotional posts for Placid Girl, and that oh so tempting Read Now option on Netgalley that I decided to read it. I figured that I'd get to

I wanted to scream about how much I loved it and throw up all at once.

Hallie loves music, that much is evident from the very start of the book. Although she is in a band with her best friend, Sarah, it is Hallie who feels the strongest connection to the music they perform. In particular she loves Haze, a musician who stopped putting out music five years ago. Nobody knows who he is.

But Hallie soon might. She starts receiving messages from someone and she is sure it is Haze. Her need to find out

I received a copy of this novel in a Goodreads giveaway.

Placid Girl is a new young adult novel unlike most others; the main character is into punk music and listens to music by an enigmatic artist who hasn't been seen in at least five years. But once he gets involved in her life, things take a strange turn.

I'm not sure I understood how Hallie considers herself a nonconformist. She's just an angst-ridden girl unsure of the future, and for all she claims to be unique, she uses apps and her cell

Wow. What a debut by Brenna Ehrlich. I read this in one sitting on my flight today, and I just really really loved how palpable and real the characters felt despite the slightly extreme / dramatic situation they were in. I loved how it plays with social media and how easy it is today to feel like you can develop authentic relationships behind a screen. Such strong writing, and what a suspenseful and compelling story. If you want a contemporary read full of complex characters, great writing, punk ...more

With all the different ways to meet people via social networking sites, how do you know that the avatar or pic used to portray someone is actually them? Have you ever seen the movie/documentary Catfish, or the MTV television show with the same name? Placid by Brenna Ehrlich is like that.

Main character, Hallie, is an aspiring drummer in a punk band, created with her best friend Sarah. Where Sarah is the “in your face” “not at all shy” lead singer, Hallie is the shy, introvert drummer that lives

Received through Goodreads Giveaways.

The prose of this book is like nothing I've read before. It is, in some places, haunting, beautiful, powerful. It drags you completely and utterly into the world and mind of Hallie, a drummer who just wants someone to pay attention to her for once rather than her best friend. The story is set in motion when she is contacted by Haze on a photo app, Haze being the singer she is totally in love with and who has been missing for a while. I don't know if it's

Growing up, we all have a little bit of Ehrlich's protagonist, Hallie in us; a stifled, beautiful and strong person who can only finally surface when we're at our most vulnerable. Constantly overshadowed by her best friend, and obsessed with the singer of her favorite band, Haze, Hallie can't quite come into her own at the start of this novel. However, as Ehrlich writes on, you dig deeper and deeper into the mind of an obsessed, yet brilliant, teenager. A teenager who is willing to block out ...more

When I read this book I was shocked at how bad it was. The entire book gives off the, “fanfiction written by a thirteen year old girl” vibe. After just reading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, I was excited to read another great book about a girl with a nerdy obsession with something. I was deeply disappointed.

Placid Girl makes teenage fangirls, or any teenager really, look like morons. The main character, Hallie, is amazingly stupid, naive, and her and her best friend are two of the most

Don't be fooled by the simple, grungy cover of this novel. Placid girl delivers in both a suspense driven plot and the characters. Our characters have complexities, from their backstories to their current motivations. Sarah, Hallie, Steve are unique characters that could easily exist in real life, with flaws, weaknesses, and strengths in each. I really enjoyed the mystery and suspense surounding Hallie's interactions with ZZZ, and all along, I was trying to figure out if ZZZ really was Haze! And ...more

I really enjoyed this story! It kept me engaged and guessing and the characters were interesting and quite likeable. The ongoing conflicts and struggles gave the story depth and the mystery of Haze kept me hooked until the last page. I loved the way the author began each chapter with "song lyrics" from Haze, and authors writing style was excellent for this genre. II highly recommend this to YA fans!

I received an advance copy of this book, and I felt very fortunate to have the opportunity to read it. Here is an author who perfectly captures some of the most exciting and/or complicated aspects of being a teen. It's a fun and unpredictable read, and the writing is so good that sometimes I found myself pausing, or even going back to reread a sentence, just because I liked her language so much.

I read the synopsis for Placid Girl by Brenna Ehrlich and I knew I wanted to read it. The concept of the novel was new to me and I’ve been stuck in a reading rut filled with young adult formula fantasies. I needed something out of the box, and I sure got it.

I just finished it and my head is still reeling. This is a mystery that keeps you grounded in your chair because once you pick it up you'll need to make sure you have nothing else your agenda including sleep because you will not be able to put it down.

“It’s stupid to lie to yourself when there’s no one eavesdropping into your mind.”

Basically: Drummer girl Hallie is obsessed with the reclusive musician Haze who may be messaging her over social media. Brenna Ehrlich spins a chilling story of what happens when the barriers between fan and artist are broken.

We’ve all heard the stories of what happens when musicians get too close to their fans. The inappropriate messages, the late-night conversations,

“It tugs at me, filling me with the kind of seasick nostalgia that can hit you in the gut when you find an old concert ticket in your purse or an old coin machine ring you got down at the boardwalk on a day when you went searching for mermaids in the surf with your best friend.

That punch of nostalgia hits me now and I start to sink down on the sky-coloured quilt, feeling the nubby fabric under my fingers, familiar as the topography of my hand.”
