Harlow Layne has her life mapped out. Graduate college, marry her football-star boyfriend, and find the perfect teaching job.
But when two pink lines flip her world upside down, she realizes perfection is just a pretty lie. Declan, the one who promised forever, chooses fame, parties, and his own ego over her and their baby. So, Harlow decides to take matters into her own hands by getting a job at a gritty dive bar, determined to stand on her own two feet.
Jake Rae, her boss, her best friend's brother, and the man who growls more than he talks, with tattoos that whisper danger and eyes that see too much. He’s everything she shouldn’t want but everything she can’t seem to stay away from.
Jake’s life revolves around his bar and his need for speed on the racetrack. Love was never in his plans until Harlow walked in, all sunshine and sharp edges, completely upending his world. She’s chaos wrapped in innocence, a temptation he can’t ignore. When he finds out she’s pregnant, his protective instincts kick in. He wants her and the baby. A family of his own.
As Declan fights to reclaim the life he once took for granted, Harlow must decide whether to chase the future she always dreamed of for her son or embrace the unexpected love that could give her everything she truly needs.
A steamy, emotional small-town romance full of tension, unexpected love, and the courage to rewrite your own story.
I'm an a romantic suspense author...wait, what? I hated to read. I wouldn't read unless forced by a teacher. I watched a popular vampire movie and wanted to see what happened next, so I bought a Nook. My obsession began. I read a book a day. I've read hundreds of books!
I felt I had a story inside me to add to the list of self-published authors, so I put myself to the test, and Safer With You was born.
I live in a small town in Pennsylvania with my husband, two amazing daughters and two dogs, an unlikely pair: a black Lab and Maltese. I spend my time writing, editing, reading and graphic designing.
This story was an easy read for me. However throughout most of it I was so annoyed. Harlow kept on making excuses for her boyfriend, and kept on hoping he would change. I have news for you girl, I could see from the start he was not changing.
Harlow had plans! Graduate college and marry her football star boyfriend. But then she got pregnant. He promised to stick by her! But every time something else was more important to him than her and their unborn child.
Jake Rae was Harlow’s boss. Cause even though she kept making excuses for him, she knew she had to do something to take care of her unborn child. Jake was grumpy and most days it seems like he couldn’t stand her, but he kept on showing up when she needed someone.
Jake’s life was the bar, his sister and grandma. And even though he didn’t want to admit it, Harlow. She was definitely the opposite of him, but he couldn’t help falling in love with her.
All he needed to figure out was that he was good enough for her and her unborn child, no matter what anyone says.
Like I said, loved the story, just wished that Harlow would have stood up to her parents and her ex’s parents sooner and got rid of that no good boyfriend.
Jake was definitely amazing. Even though he was so in love with Harlow it took him a minute. Loved how he just was so comfortable with her son and knew that he wanted this little family.
I really liked aspects of this story and these overall premise of Harlow struggling with the father of her child and Jake coming in to rescue them both. Unfortunately I felt it could have been written with more nuance and lacked strength or uniqueness. Just in some of the ways the story went or some of the things people said, particularly the parents, it was cliche or cringingly not what anyone would ever have said or it was too simplified maybe.
I did like Harlow and her strength and resolve and I did like Jake and his dedication and love. And I said I did like storys premise. A spoilt brat of a father who thought he could have his cake and eat it too, while he covers up his darkness. A mother with drive and love but parents who dont see her for who she really is. And the man shes destined for who never gives up.
But the writing style of this one just didnt really connect for me on this one like it has in others.
Another heart wrenching, beautiful edition to this series and one I was lucky enough to beta read! I have loved every addition to this series and have related to all of the girls in some way. This one stood out so much though. The family dynamics, the way Harlow fought for her future and how hard she had to fight, not because of her family or upbringing but in spite of them. Her stubbornness, determination, and independence are all I have ever wanted to be and watching her find herself and her strength was so heartwarming and inspiring. I couldn't ask for a better third book to the series that stole my heart from the first chapter of the first book.
Seriously, if you haven't read this series yet. Do it. I have binged every book.
Tropes: best friends brother, pregnancy, slow burn, biker boy,
I feel like I had high hopes for this book because Jake seemed like such a grumpy and rough around the edges character in all the other books but when it came down to it, he was a softie. Which isn’t a bad thing! It just means that he is a well rounded character and written to be honest with himself. Harlow has her quirks. At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to connect with her character, and to be honest, it took a few to actually connect with her. But, again she was a well rounded character as well.
To be honest, I wish there was more to their story. I feel like there was so much angst and build up that once it got going and flowing, it was over.
This was an interesting story. Harlow made her mistakes, had doubts about her boyfriend, but she was determined to be independent, work the job of her choice, and raise her child her way. Trouble kept popping up, pushing her toward Jake, then pulling apart, having her doubt Declan, and so much more. Thankfully, she had a great support system with friends. Jake kept his distance from Harlow, tried to avoid her, all because he was afraid of his feelings for her. Illegal racing, ice storms, and secrets added to the story.
