With only a few months left to serve before she became a free woman, Charlotte Oliver accepted Marcus Wainwright’s marriage proposal – he had chosen her to be his servant when she had arrived from England aboard the convict ship Atwich in Van Dieman’s Land and she had been caring for him since. He had been kind to her and she believed that even though she had no romantic feelings for him, she would be happy in Sydney in their new life.

Hobart Town in 1844 and their view of the Zephyrus showed it

A dangerous and exciting tale of life in the penal colonies of 19th century Australia when, in an attempt to empty the overcrowded prisons of England, convicted felons were transported for seven years to life for crimes as small as stealing a handkerchief, to first degree murder. Charlotte Oliver is nearing the end of her sentence, served as a domestic servant to the sanctimonious Marcus Wainwright, preacher and self-styled do-gooder. Marcus has decided he will marry Charlotte as soon as she get ...more

Téa Cooper is one of few authors writing historical romances set in Australia, and it’s such a pity there aren’t more of them! I really enjoyed this book. It deals with convicts and the dangers of life on the sea, and the founding of colonial Australia (well, a few decades in!).

There’s so much about the lower classes of the nineteenth century that is fascinating – and lends itself to adventurous historical romances. Of course it doesn’t exactly fit the fairy tale the big publishers are looking t

Forgotten Fragrance takes you back to a time and place where everlasting love was possible even through adversity. Charlotte and Jamie were separated and transported when both were accused of her sister's murder.

Charlotte's sentence was almost complete and her benefactor, who'd kept her safe, wanted to marry her and start over in Sydney where there would be no stigma of her convict status. They booked as the first passengers aboard Zephyrus with it's new captain Christine Charity.

During the voya

Forgotten Fragrance gives the reader a whiff of something delightful. It takes us on a voyage to Australia’s “wild west” days, and the situations and events that formed that nation.
A convicted criminal, Charlotte Oliver has few options to look forward to, so when she’s offered marriage she agrees with thanksgiving, never mind that her intended is about as appealing as a mud hen. What she cannot anticipate is that her life, and the lives of all those on board, will change forever when the engage

4.5 stars. Set on board the ship Zephyrus in 19th century Australia, convict Charlotte meets captain Christian Charity and wonders why he seems so familiar to her. This is a second chance love story under difficult circumstances - Charlotte is engaged to her master, the creepy preacher Marcus Wainwright. Full of fascinating historical fact (I never knew what keelhauling actually meant!), it's blended seamlessly into a wonderful historical love story. ...more

This story elicits a range of emotions from the reader, although it is perhaps a little over the top. Still an enjoyable story.
