How can a man who has been programmed to become a mindless, soulless killer keep the emerald-eyed beauty safe? This was exciting. I loved the ticking clock element with the blue pills and Max was so hot. I loved the heroine too. Very well done intrigue with a lot of action and heart.
This was clearly my favorite book of Carol Ericson's. When I first started reading it, I thought I was reading a Bourne novel (it reminded me very much of the last Bourne movie) and I was quite disappointed. However, I LOATHE to not finish a book and I'm so glad I continued reading because this book was full of constant action, mystery, suspense, terror and (naturally) love. I love, love, loved the book!
Ava Whitman and Max Duvall made a great couple and you could feel the sexual tension throughout the book. Max is going to keep her alive no matter what and Ava wants to find the cure for Max. Each have to battle their own demons and keep one another alive. Ava knows she doesn't stand a chance without Max's help. Even if she wasn't trying to help him, she knows those responsible for the brainwashing protocol will stop at nothing to keep her from 'curing' Max and others.
The only reason that I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because I thought it wrapped up just a bit too quickly. When I got to the last chapter, I was positive this was going to be part one of a two-part story - but Ericson wrapped it all up. I really wanted it to go on for just a little bit longer. Having said that, though - this is hands down my favorite book of Carol's so far.
A brand new series that will have you wanting the next book in the series. Book #1 in the series Under Fire was a fast pace read that will have you hanging on to what ever you are sitting on until the very end.
Romantic Suspense author Carol Ericson begins a thrilling new series, “Brothers in Arms: Retribution”, with the action-filled “Under Fire”. Covert Ops agent Max Duvall, still recovering from the lingering effects of a brainwashing attempt, is a man inwardly desperate to regain his soul and his spirit. Dr. Ava Whitman has made a deadly mistake: she has unknowingly been assisting “Tempest”, the corrupt black ops group out to run the world and bring down the crime-fighting covert agency, “Prospero”, and its leader, Jack Coburn. When her lab is destroyed, and her coworkers are killed, it’s Max who comes to Ava’s rescue—and he needs her as much as she needs him. Max was part of a group of agents who routinely visited Ava for treatment of mental and physical injuries as part of a research program. Max needs to find himself again, and Ava is the only one who can help him—if he can keep them both alive. The more time they spend together, the more their attraction grows, and soon their hearts as much endangered as their existence. Can Max not only overcome the threat of Tempest, but overcome his struggles with his own psyche? Ava was always fond of Max as her patient, but now she feels more than mere fondness. Can she trust him with her heart and her very life? “Under Fire” is an involving and intriguing read for lovers of romantic suspense.
I was anxious to get back into another Brothers In Arms series! This one has a great premise - an experiment gone wrong that makes elite killers! It was fabulous! I love the fast pace of the book - the action never stopped! The characters were very interesting also. Ava is a doctor at this government lab but has no idea what is truly going on there. When a rogue agent starts shooting and killing everyone at the lab, Ava is petrified - what is going on? She knows this agent and he's always been nice. What's happening?? Then another agent, Max, comes to her rescue and they flee the lab, only to find people dogging their every step. No matter where they go, they are found. It is this kind of action that kept me turning the pages. I couldn't put the book down. As Ava starts to find out what was really happening in the lab where she worked, she is appalled! She must help Max find an antidote or Max too, will suffer ill consequences. I can't wait to find out who is behind this evil program as the series continues! *** The author provided me with a book in exchange for an honest review and I have done that.

My thoughts - I loved Ava and Max and completely believed their connection. The action was non-stop, This was a book I did not want to put down and I am looking forward to the next books in this series. Carol Ericson is one of my favorite authors.
Love the plot line of Ava and Max. The plot actually reminds me of one of my all time suspense thriller series, The Bourne Identity series.
Could see this put into just like Bourne series mini-movie and especially knowing Max's character has endured the brainwashing attempt and Ava is not willing to be let go just like that to save herself, she from the beginning was a good lab tech who have just fallen into the wrong place and wrong time and when she found out that Max has been secretly keeping his feelings to her since the first time they met at the lab before the action starts, more than anything she was trying with her knowledge and expertise to save Max from dying after watching many died under the experiment.
The book grabs your attention from the very first page and doesn't let go until the end. It starts out with a shoot out in Ava's lab where she is the only employee left standing, then the gunman turns the gun on her. At the last minute she's rescued by Max, who vows to keep her safe.
The book follows them on the run as they race to find a cure for Max's brainwashing while at the same time, running for their lives from a covert ops agency who is trying to re-control Max.
Read to find out if they make it through, and to see where their desire for one another leads. Highly recommended read!
Admittedly I didn't know if I could get into this book as they were talking about cyborgs..but it was a fast read once you started... A bad government called Tempest is trying to make it soldiers invincible...they were given shots every month to boost them up...Max steps in when one of his friends has killed and is about to kill Ava the Dr...Ava after gtting to know Max believe's him for what all he is going through..she can make the antidote to help him...so they are on the run to find the stuff and do that...a great book that I couldn't put down
