I'm a fan of Alexis Morgan's 'Paladin' series, so I was very excited to get "Warrior Unbound" which is the start of a new 'Talions' series. While it wasn't (for me) quite as good as her Paladin series, it was still an interesting read with hot, sexy, paranormal men (and women)!

Ranulf is a Kyth Talion enforcer. He's the one his Dame (queen) calls when one of the their kind go bad...like a Kyth bogeyman. But he so very tired. He's given over a thousand years of service to his Dame and wants nothing more than to retire, alone, to his secluded mountain retreat. However, his Dame has called and he must answer for now. His attention is riveted when he encounters an unknown, and unknowing, female Kyth. When she becomes embroiled in his hunt for a rogue, it's all he can do to keep his hands off her.

Kerry has always known she's a little different, but at least she always thought she was human! Now she's got two handsome hulks guarding her from a Kyth gone bad. Both of guards are hot, both are built like a wet dream...so why is it the one she can't stop thinking about is the dark bad boy of the pair? And if that's not enough, the Dame is trying to force Kerry to be the next queen!!

I'll be interested to see where this series heads. Hopefully the next book will be about the Talion who lost out on the girl in this book. But I'll have to wait a whole year to find out :(

I thought this series has a pretty cool concept:

The basis for this story was that the author read an article about an excavation of ancient Viking graves, and she wondered what if someone who knew them was still alive?

She has a race descended from the Vikings, they aren't immortal, but they're very long-lived. And in one scene the hero has a necklace that he'd given his wife on their wedding day, and he'd had her buried with it. He'd had to steal it from the excavation site.

It's a good series, easy to follow and I liked the characters.

I am a long time fan of Alexis Morgan’s Paladin series. I’ve read the series from the beginning and really enjoyed Morgan’s world building as well as her character development. While I enjoyed this book, I didn’t love it. I think it has great potential, but there was something missing for me. I think it was that I didn’t really connect with the characters. They were just meh.

Kerry Logan has no idea how her life is going to change when she saves a club full of people from dying by fire. She’s clueless to the fact that she, and she alone, saved the lives of people that would have been otherwise dead. She does know that she will be targeted by the arsonist and doesn’t look forward to the news of her heroism getting out.

Ranulf Thorsen has been called upon by the leader of the Kyth to bring the arsonist, who is also Kyth, to justice. The Kyth are a race that feed off the energy of other people. Energy to them is like food to a normal person. They need it to survive. They don’t have to kill people to get energy, though there are those like Braden (the arsonist) who do exactly that. The energy that comes with fear and terror is dark and addictive. Ranulf strips the traitors of their energy and it has taken its toll on him over the years.

I found the idea behind the Kyth and the elite Talion warriors interesting. Needing energy to survive is fascinating when you (or I?) think about it. Kerry is a special Kyth, though. She has the ability to heal. Hence all the people that survived the club fire. Also, only someone with her abilities can lead the Kyth and they’re going to need her to step up.

The whole thing was just a little too pat for me. Kerry has no idea any paranormal elements exist, yet by the end of the book she is gung-ho to lead a race of people that she really knows nothing about. So while I think the series has potential to be as good as her Paladin series, this book isn’t as strong as it could be considering it’s the first in a new series.

Grade: 3.75 out of 5

It was so cheesy & dated! NO ONE talks like that!! AND What the hell is a Kyth! She forgot to mention anything beyond an energy sucking viking who lives a very long time. Sooo what about a girl Kyth? Hmmm... Also, my cover problem. This dude is supposed to be a very large redhead. That's all I know about him at all as far as looks. I don't know who the hell this small black haired guy on the cover is! Maybe the bad guy??? Below are some great lines from the book...

she's out clubbing???

"As the music warmed her up, she let it loose and let it all go. Swaying & spinning losing herself in the moment."

"Kerry had been watching the dancers, especially one couple with paticularly dazzling moves. Their intricate, fast-stepping dance patterns bespoke a lot of pracctice & hard work, even if they were making it look easy."

OK Salsa time - in a club.

"with a flick of his wrist, he spun her out & then back into his waiting arms. Dipping her over his arm, he was caught by her gaze....." geeeeezzz!

Foreplay - at her apartment.

"From the moment she'd sashayed across the roomafter inviting him in, all the blood in his head had plummeted to pool painfully much lower down." ooookkkk...

She's making dinner-

"come sit down at the table while i put the final touches on dinner!"

The whole book read like this... I just threw some out. I am going to keep reading this series though because it was soooo bad. I can't imagine it getting better. I think someone edited the ending of the book, because it was less - Stupidly worded?? I dunno! I saw her picture, and I WAS RIGHT!!! OLD!

I am a fan of Alexis Morgan's "Paladins" series, so I was curious about this new series the "Talions".

At first, I though it was kinda strange that the author didn't quite explain the background on the Kyth people and how and what they were. Eventually throughout the explanation to Kerry Logan, does the explanation of how the Kyth came about and what they could do is explained.

The book does off insights to how hard is it to be a Talion for the people of Kyth and the aftermath of being one of it's enforcers. Through the thoughts of Ranulf Thorsen, the reader gets a clear understanding of how someone could possibly fall into the grips of darkness while striping the energy of renegades over a thousand of years. It was amazing to read how much he distanced himself from civilization to keep the darkness at bay.

I am glad that Sandor Kearn's book is next. He deserves his own love story. Although his feelings towards Ranulf is understandable, even if undeserved, I wish he could have helped Dame Judith more. I hated her death at the hands of Braden Owen. I had hope that she could have given him some kind of blow of energy so he would see her as weak, old and obsolete. I kinda wanted hi to see her as the survivor she was with the loss of her consort. I wanted him to die with some kind of regret for his actions.

My other thought is how Ranulf couldn't sense Braden when his property was right next door to Braden while he was torturing the female and male that he held prisoner. Maybe I don't have the timing right from when Braden took the female and then picked up the hitchhiker to when Ranulf drove Kerry to his cabin ... but you would think Ranulf would have sensed the evil energy radiating off Braden since he was feeding off such dark energy for such a long period of time,

In the end, I'm glad Ranulf had enough good sense to stay with Kerry as she reigns as the new Grand Dame of Kyth.

That's my two cents.

I loved Alexis Morgan's Paladin series a lot so I have been interested in this series for some time now. I finally sat down to read book one in her Talions series and I enjoyed the adventure. She has strong characters, an intriguing plot, and an antagonist that was just as strong as the protagonists. Kerry doesn't know she is Kyth and when she ends up being the hero at a dance club fire she attracts the attention of not only the arsonist but also the Kyth warrior, Ranulf. Ranulf is the assassin that his queen calls in only for the hardest cases. He has killed for a thousand years and all he wants is peace. He is feared even by his own people. But he cannot stay away from Kerry. Their romance was passionate and explosive. Overall, I enjoyed the story and I look forward to book 2.

My only negative (and it really isn't a negative) is I would have liked for Ranulf to not have shared his love with her before the final battle. I think it would have added another layer of tension if she had confessed her love but he didn't, at least not to her. From the beginning, this mission was to be his last then he would have been set free from his oath. I think if after the final battle happened that he did leave and she let him go because she loved him enough to set him free, would have added another level of emotional tension to the story. He could then realize his mistake and go back to her and confess his love for her. I did like how he proposed marriage and their wedding, they are quite cute together.

I actually liked this book a lot. It's very tightly plotted and well paced. When I started writing the review, however, I had a hard time thinking of nice things to say about it. It isn't that this book is bad- it is just nothing really special.

I think that my main problem was with the world building. I didn't get a good idea of what a Kyth was or how their culture worked. I gathered that they are "psychic vampires" but the nature of their power was never clearly defined. The book also explains that they have royalty and some sort of warrior caste, but this seems borrowed from JR Ward. They also have some rogue elements that go crazy attacking their own people- this seems borrowed from Christine Feehan. I would honestly rather be reading a book by either of those authors.

However, if you want a fast paced Paranormal Romance that is steamy but not too porny, this one is a great choice. Even though it wasn't my favorite, I will probably read the other two books in the series when I come across them.

Meet a new race – the Kyth. Descended from Vikings this race is cool, they use human energy to survive. The central characters in this book are Ranulf Thorsen, the warrior responsible for punishing rouge Kyth; Sandor Kean, a warrior with strength and charm; Dame Judith, the leader of the race; and Kelly Logan, a strong and powerful Kyth who has lived her entire life with no knowledge of her heritage. Saving the lives of everyone caught in a dance club fire brings Kelly to the attention of Dame Judith. Ranulf is responsible for bring the arsonist to justice and Sandor task is telling Kelly who/what is really is. This book is filled with page turning suspense.

Several months ago the book was listed with my Goodreads recommendations and I thought it looked really good. I did not put it on my to-read list and could not remember the title or author, but I did remember the cover… a hot guy. After reading what seemed like a zillion book descriptions I found it and it was as good I as I though it would be. The lesson I learned – if a book looks put it on your to read list.

Pretty bog standard, unimpressive paranormal romance. Not bad, just not in any way special or impressive. I appreciated that the heroine stood up for herself frequently and often got her own way. She seemed smart and determined.

But honestly, the villain was evil for no reason except that he was evil and he was a pretty cliched baddie too. The attraction between the H and h was almost instant. The Talions are supposed to be a group but no other Talion is ever actually mentioned. In fact, it felt like there was a whole dearth of people in the world. Like Morgan couldn't be bothered to flesh it out.

Worst of all, though ,was that there was very very little tension in the book. We're told frequently that this was the hardest mission of Ranulf's long life and that the villain had to be hunted, etc. etc. But the characters went dancing, ate, made love repeatedly and then the climax was brief and uninspiring. After all the villain's grandstanding your never shown his realization that he'll be defeated. Meh

This is Alexis Morgan's new series. I have read the first Paladin series and it was pretty good. Although, I must confess that I really enjoy this series mainly because of my weakness for Viking's...my heritage.

The story line is interesting as she has taken the immortal warrior and given the familiar character a new spin without trying to over explain it. The hero is flawed but only because of centuries of other's judgments and quite frankly, he's tired of what he does. That was honestly refreshing and really grabbed my empathy. A nice touch. The heroine was fiesty without being annoying even if she took to the situation a bit too easily I thought. But the author developed a situation that explained it if only enough to let the reader's suspension of disbelief barely hang on. Otherwise, it was an enjoyable read that I finished in one sitting. A delight and I am looking forward to the next.

NOT AS GREAT AS I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE.
THE CONCEPT IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING NEW, BUT THE ENTIRE PLOT WISE WAS AVERAGE IN TERMS OF VILLAIN AND CHEMISTRY.

OUR HERO is a thousand year old Viking "KYTH" (if i didn't misspelled), a special kind of being that lives through collecting energy from around them, especially from crowds. He's also the enforcer of his kind, and has been indebted to the Great Dame ever since she rescued him from death. Ranulf is also very wary of his duty, and wishes this to be the last favour for his people before he retires to his secluded mountain home. However, this last duty entails with the appearance of a woman who may just be the next Great Dame and it doesn't help that he's attracted to her. Frankly, while I liked the push and pull passion he had with our heroine, I wasn't on board with their chemistry that was 'expected' of them to have in the beginning. It always starts with lust. Yes. Personality wise, Ranulf's pretty great...he's honorable, a gentleman but at the same time rough on the edges that gives him a mature bad boy vibe and he follows his own mind. He's definitely a soldier yet also one with his own principles.

OUR HEROINE was an orphan and has grown up quite well despite the circumstances. Instinctively, her Kyth within knows how to keep her powers well balanced out even if she isn't aware of it. One night in the club, there was an arsonist attack and she saved most of the humans there, putting her in the spotlight in the supernatural world. So, yes the antagonist is going to get her. Thus, the appearance of Ranulf and Sandor in her life...albeit rather abruptly it was so goddamned suspicious...but because the heroine's a great sport...she doesn't find it all too odd. And i think she was biased because she likes Ranulf despite Sandor's badmouthing.

OVERALL everything is on the average scale...chemistry, plot, bad guy, the sex and etc. Nothing to rave about but it won't deter me to continue this series.

TRIGGER WARNINGS!! Extreme violence against women. The main bad guy is basically like jack the ripper. There is rape (a woman is tied down with rope), extreme torture (a man and two women are tortured with surgical instruments), arson (multiple buildings are set on fire with the purpose of killing people, attempted murder, burning flesh, disemboweling, gun violence, I think that's it.

There is literally no reason for a bad guy to be like this. There are plenty of other ways for people to be "evil" without resorting to torturing and raping women like this. I have no respect for an author that can't think of better tension than violence against women. If you have to rely on something like this for tension and can't think up anything else on your own, you aren't a good writer. There's plenty of that in real life, it shouldn't be in fantasy books.

Adoro a Alexis Morgan.

The steamy bits in the book were truly all that were keeping me intrigued to finish it. I liked learning about Kerry and Ranulf, but most of the story left me feeling bored. I wanted more wow moments, but I can't control that. I am debating whether to continue this series.

While burning off energy at a club, the heroine is confronted with the crisis of a fire. Quick thinking and possessing a calm, cool and level head, she's able to single handedly save over a dozen people from the blaze, even going so far as to risk her own life to go into the smoke to save a woman who's broken a leg.

Praised as a hero, her good deed has inadvertently set in motion the complete change of her life. She's become the target of the arsonist who wants revenge against the one who prevented his plans from going through smoothly. As a result, she's contacted by two men. Both are gorgeous in their own right. At first glance, bodyguard #1 is the one for her. He's smooth, flirtatious and easy on the eyes. But once bodyguard #2 comes into the picture, she begins to see a change in bodyguard #1's behavior and it's for the worst.

The hero, aka bodyguard #2, is a loner and an outcast from his people who fear him and his abilities. Killing rouges for over a century and feeding on evil energy during that time has given him an unnaturally long life. It's also made him unstable and unwanted by most of his kind. The hero never enjoyed his possession as assassin for his queen but he did it for the good of his people and also because he is very very good at it. But it's made him tired and longing for a different life.

When he meets the heroine, it's the first time in a very long time where he's felt any sort of connection to another person. Maybe it's her courage and heart that attracts him, or maybe it's the fact that she reminds him so much of his queen-a woman he greatly admires. Regardless of the reasons, and though he tries very hard to keep an emotional distance, he finds himself drawn to her.

When it comes to light that not only is the heroine one of his kind, but also possessing the abilities that make her the next queen, the hero knows he will do everything he can to protect her but their paths must eventually part. He doesn't see himself as a consort or worthy of such a woman.

The heroine in turn is fiercely attracted to the brutal, brooding and massive hero despite all the warnings that he's a killer, unstable and one step away from turning rogue himself. She defends him, protects him and for the first time she feels like she belongs.

This was a middle of the row sort of book. Neither terrible or amazing, I liked it well enough but it was nothing special. I enjoyed the hero characters. I thought he was tortured without the melodrama and I liked the unbalanced scale of good and bad he battled within himself, even though as the reader I felt him to be a much better man than he gave himself credit for. Regardless, he was on a path of discovery for most of the book.

I liked the heroine though I did find her far too complacent with the new world she finds herself in. She's the target of a crazy fire starter, the cop handing the case has just been murder yet when 2 strange men show up at her door saying they belong to a secret investigating agency, she doesn't hesitate to let them sleep in her house! She also believed the who immortal energy feeding thing far too easily to be believable.

I thought the plot like a bit strain because of this as I took the lake of believability with a grain of salt and just focused on the characters. Because of this I felt it deserved a 3 star rating rather than a 2.

This book was amazing, a different taste than other books but I've read, but good none the less. Can't wait to read continuing book if there is one!

SPOILERS:

Brandan-enemy/rogue kyth
Ranulf-warrior
Kerry-Kyth
Sandor-Warrior, Hates Ranulf

Kerry interfers with Brandan's fire plans by saving people from the fire he created. Which now puts her in the sites of the unwanted. Ranulf does some investigations and realizes after he found a evidence that brandan is the killer. He is one of Talion's most trusted and is close friends with Sandor..who would have guess he was a killer too?
Sandor was torn when he heard the news that Brandan was the killer. DAme(boss of Tailons/leader) believes that Kerry carries the blood like dame in some way, the power to heal others. And she's set Sandor and Ranulf on the mission so that one of them would end up being with Kerry-dame's doing matchmaking.
Later on Kerry ends up being taken to Dame's place because of Bradan out to get kerry, and Ranulf puts her in the room next to his(because Dame told him to-she's playing matchmaking).
Later when Sandor got in a fight with Ranulf because of sex Kerry stopped them both by pinning them to the floor with her hands which means shes the rarest of the kyth, like Dame.
Ranulf had a wife who died, and people discovered her body and artifacts and jewelrys that ranulf gave her, so he stole them back.in the end bradan kills jasiah and judith, and sandor and randulf took their revenge and killed bradan. Kerry is now Dame Kerry and is married to Ranulf.#133

It was a book I enjoyed but didn't love. It was really entertaining and a bit original but not that much.

My main problem with this book was that the plot was not well developed. When I start a series I want the first book to explain the world in a way I will understand it easily and get to love it from the beginning. Well with this installment I finished the book and I never felt like I actually got to understand the species the Talions defend and protect. Much more info should have given IMHO. Also this book introduces us to a whole new species where many individuals exist and a queen rules but we only get to know 3 Talions and the queen. It felt like we should have got to known much more Talions or at least more Kyths.

I had a huge problem with the characters we got to know as well. The "villain" was a rouge Talion. SUPER annoying. I hated him, I got bored as hell.Total asshole and in the way the whole time. I just wanted him to disappear. Although now I read he will be the hero of book 2 which makes me a bit nervous. We'll see, so far I'm not sure I will like this series. Morgan's Paladins series is way better.

Still the book isn't a total waist. I enjoyed many things of it. I usually write in my reviews what I liked about the book, but in this case the things that annoyed me stayed in my mind for longer and with more strength,LOL. Definitely many things need to change in order for me to really enjoy this series, but many times I didn't enjoyed much the first book or 2 and ended loving the series so I wont give up at least until book 3.

I actually read this back in April and totally forgot to add it to my read list, so thought now was a good time. However this will be another short review as I read it quite a while ago and don't remember 100% of the story.

I first got into Alexis Morgan's Paladins of Darkness series back in 2008 and I enjoyed and liked the different storyline that I kept on reading and when I found out there was a sort of spin off series Talions I was more than happy to keep up with Ms Morgans new series.

Although I've only read the first book in the series so far, I already have the next two books in the series waiting to be read at some point and I can happily say that even just after the first book I much prefer the Talions series to the Paladins of Darkness series.

I really enjoyed the banter between Ranulf and Sandor I not only found it amusing and light entertainment in parts but helpful to move the story along.

Ranulf and Kerry annoyed me at times, although I did like them together. And I really enjoyed the ending.

I happily look forward to making time to read the next book in this series!

Hmm. How to review. This book was good, it was a very fast, easy read. It just wasn't that, I dunno, great. I liked the characters, and I can't even say they weren't well developed, they were just, instant. The story was good, although I feel like maybe if I'd read the author's other Paladin series maybe I would have understood some of it better. Basically, there is another species living amongst the humans, called Kyth. I didn't really get what was all that different about them except that they somehow absorb and utilize energy from humans. It was kinda vague and I really didn't get the whole Kyth thing. The romance was good and the plot was entertaining and moved along nicely. A nice, light, easy read. Not sure if I'm going to rush off to get the next in the series. I'll keep it in mind but I think I'll likely move on to another series.

The story revolves around a group of "special" beings known as the Kyth. They are an ancient Nordic race able to manipulate human energy.

Ranulf Thorsen is an special type of Kyth, living for thousands of years as his kinsmen's eye-for-an-eye justice. He is a Tailon, the warriors of the Kyth. Ranulf is called in to asist in an increasing problem. One of the Kyth have gone rogue and needs to be dealt with. Along the way he finds something,...no someone unexpected. Her name is Kerry Logan and she is in the wrong place at the time this rogue Kyth decides to torch a nightclub.

Like most of Alexis' books, her storyline is fast paced and exciting with a lot of steamy HOTTNESS included. I suggest that you give this series a try if you like her Paladin series...

A good read.

New series, new characters, new settings, new storyline. I am hooked!! Great beginning to a new series.

the Talions are warriors of their breed the Kyth. They are energy consuming species and the Talions are their enforcers.

Ranulf Thorsen is a centuries old Viking and a Talion enforcer. He has been doing his job for centuries and he is tired of it. tired of the killing the renegades of his breed.

Sandor Kearn is another Talion and Ranulf's bitter rival. He also has been ordered to help Ranulf with the renegade Kyth that set fire to a human nightclub.

Kerry Logan is a "human" but is actually an unknown Kyth. Who has immense Kyth power and is unaware that she holds the key to the Kyth's fate.

Great story and set of characters. The sex is not bad either, :) grin

This Paladin tale was a good read but I did not know who to
engage with here as there were three people tied in a sticky web -
Ranulf the Talion Enforcer, Talion Sandor Kearn his bitter rival and
the heroine Kerry Logan who does not realise her background is of Kyth
blessed with ancient and unique abilities.
The storyline incorporated Sandor a lot - yet it was the relationship
between Kerry and Ranulf I felt could have been stronger and I began
to feel sorry for Talion Sandor and almost wished he'd get the girl.
I wasn't convinced about the Dame Judith bit - like a mother controller -
I wanted to stir them all up with a big stick and tell them to just
get on with it - jury is out on this one but glad I read it.

I just love Alexis Morgan! I am a sucker for redheads, but when he is an experienced six foot something muscle man I am all over that!! Ranulf can come protect me anytime.. I think this is the begining of a wonderful world of Fantasy, love, and violence.. I do love the Palidins maddly and it was hard to switch gears after reading the entire series in one week then moving right into the Talions but I think it was a good intro and I am hoping to be just as addicted to these wonderfully rugged men as I am the Palidins..

I didn't hate this story but it was a bit predictable and lacked enough characters or an interesting world to fall back on. This was a short book that read like a long one for me. Where are the people of this race they talk about? All through the book the author talks about the strength and unsurpassed ability of these two warriors then they need so much help with everything. Also, I can't believe all there is is two warriors to protect their so called Queen, or "Dame" as they call her. This was just ok for me.

I like this Talion series but not as much as I like her Paladin series. There's action, adventure, intrigue, paranormal romance, and sex; but it just didn't grab me and make me want to be friends with these characters. The stories just weren't fleshed out very well - I'm familiar enough with the genre that I could fill in the blanks myself but I shouldn't have to. It left me flat enough that I couldn't bring myself to review it until I'd finished the first 3 books in the series. Give The Paladin series a chance though.

I'm surprised I liked this as much as I did, honestly. Part of me wants to read Sandor's story, the other part is kind of unsure how he'll handle everything and to be honest, I don't want to see him suffering.
But, as far as this story, I wish the main focus had been more leaning towards Kerry's past. We really don't know anything about her, and that made me sort of indifferent. I liked her and all, but the lack of information caused me to feel distant from everything that happened.
I did like her strength and personality, I just wish there'd been more of her backstory.

This is about the Talions. This is the first in a series started by this author. She also write the Paladin series. This is the story of Ranulf who has served his people for a thousand years. He meets Kerry who does not realise that her blood contains the Kyth gene. This means that she has healing and other supernatural abilities. They have to band together, along with Ranulf's fellow Talion Sandor to bring down a rogue Talion warrior.
