Despite being somewhat dated now, the O'Reilly on System Performance Tuning is a good generic guide to how to streamline a UNIX system. The writing is not too technical and can be read by non-experts and the advice is still relevant for LINUX. A good introduction to system-level tuning, it remains a classic for geeks.

An indispensable place to start

It is generic and only dated to the extent that there is more information now. The concepts and methods are still sound and can be applied to today’s systems.
