Josh loves to be close to his mum at night in her pouch, or ‘pocket', as he calls it. Though, soon he must sleep on the grass like the older kangaroos. One day, Josh's mum has a surprise about what is in her "It needs lots of love and care." Josh racks his brains to try and think and, after the help of several friends, gives up. What could the surprise be? And will he love it as much as his mother says he will? A sweet story about gaining a new sibling and how children can welcome a new member to the family. Young kids are going to enjoy guessing what's in mama kangaroo's pocket! Simple, sweet tale about a young joey who has outgrown his mom's pouch. Illustrations are lovely!

I received this book as a first read. The illustrations are beautiful. The story is a nice introduction to Australian animals and drawing inferences. It's a nice book for the PreK-K set. There's also a nice discussion guide at the end of the book with questions to ask kids after the book is read. My one quirk with the book was the decision to use a parrot instead of a kookaburra which I think would have given it more of an Aussie feel. A good book that makes me curious to see the other books in the QEB Storytime family.

This is a very cute book! I really liked the gentle illustrations. I think the illustrator did a great job showing what Australia and her animals look like. The story is quite simple and sweet, and would be a great one for Story Times. I especially liked the last page for the parents, giving some ideas on how to engage the children as the story is being read.

Adorable! A kangaroo Joey wants in it's mother's pouch but she tells him he can't because of a surprise. He asks all his friends what the surprise could be.
