The Vermont Country Store Cookbook: Recipes, History, and Lore from the Classic American General Store

Rate this book
The ultimate New England store, whose catalog reaches millions of people, presents the store's first cookbook bringing us back to simpler days.

The Vermont Country Store Cookbook captures both the essence of the iconic store and the soul of the Vermont way of life: a self-reliant, rich life in the slow lane. Through recipes, yarns, archival photos, and sumptuous visuals, it tells the story of five generations of Orton storekeepers, while featuring fresh-from-the-farm cooking that imbues the cuisine of the present with the best of the past. Approximately 120 updated and original family recipes evoke memories, conveying all the hominess of the catalogue, but also appeal to the modern tastes of contemporary cooks. The book also features sidebars of Vermont history and more than 200 photographs, both black-and-white archival and four-color photographs, the latter taken especially for the book.

VCS sure knows how to sell nostalgia, and this is no exception. The recipes aren't as gimmicky as I thought they would be, though, all things considered.

The Vermont Country Store Cookbook is a combination cookbook and history of the Orton family. My mother an di have ordered from the Vermont Country Store since I was very young and this captures the feeling. The archived photos and the best recipes from the Orton family bring the history home. This has interesting stories as well as recipes. This was a fun read which brings home the history of the country store. I love the stories and the history. It will make a great gift for that person who loves to cook or loves history.

I received a copy thru Goodreads Giveaways.

This book is, as many have stated, worthy of being a coffee table book. Not only are the pictures stunning but the recipes are wonderful. The nostalgic descriptions and tasteful recommendations make this book more enjoyable with each page turn. If you find yourself dreaming of the Vermont countryside and scrumptious recipes that go beyond comfort foods, this is a book for you. Enjoy!

I received a free copy from Goodreads giveaways for review. My first impression of this book: It's big and beautiful!! Much more than I expected. I love the photos (old and new) and reading about the early days of the store. This is a great book, but a must for those who are familiar with The Vermont Country Store.

The Vermont Country Store cookbook is a very nice coffee table recipe book. It is heavy and nicely printed. The beginning of the book tells about the country store with photographs. I wasn't too interested in this section. However, the recipes were nice food porn. I love to read recipes so this book was right up my alley. This would be a nice gift.
