The ultimate New England store, whose catalog reaches millions of people, presents the store's first cookbook bringing us back to simpler days.
The Vermont Country Store Cookbook captures both the essence of the iconic store and the soul of the Vermont way of life: a self-reliant, rich life in the slow lane. Through recipes, yarns, archival photos, and sumptuous visuals, it tells the story of five generations of Orton storekeepers, while featuring fresh-from-the-farm cooking that imbues the cuisine of the present with the best of the past. Approximately 120 updated and original family recipes evoke memories, conveying all the hominess of the catalogue, but also appeal to the modern tastes of contemporary cooks. The book also features sidebars of Vermont history and more than 200 photographs, both black-and-white archival and four-color photographs, the latter taken especially for the book.
i liked best learning about the familys that started and handed down the business to their offspring. Many recipes sound good but i would not care to make. Solid 3.5 stars.
A delightful book filled with recipes, pictures and tidbits from the Vermont country store story! I will probably just buy the book because I was delighted with the stories and pictures! I have visited the Vermont country store many times and this book fills me with nostalgia!
Excellent memories of our “ Vacation “ in Vermont … The pictures are incredible & the recipes are very “doable “ for everyday meals. I loved the incorporating of “stories” and tips on some of the recipes! Well written!
Absolutely loved this. There are so many recipes that are wonderful, nearly all of which I want to try, and I absolutely loved the stories too. Learned a few things too about the state of Vermont.
VCS sure knows how to sell nostalgia, and this is no exception. The recipes aren't as gimmicky as I thought they would be, though, all things considered.
The Vermont Country Store Cookbook is a combination cookbook and history of the Orton family. My mother an di have ordered from the Vermont Country Store since I was very young and this captures the feeling. The archived photos and the best recipes from the Orton family bring the history home. This has interesting stories as well as recipes. This was a fun read which brings home the history of the country store. I love the stories and the history. It will make a great gift for that person who loves to cook or loves history.
I was so excited to win this book from the Goodreads giveaway because I collect cookbooks. There are so many pictures in this cookbook that are so beautiful! Many pictures of the stunning Vermont countryside. The pictures of the food and table settings are lovely. I am definitely going to try some of the delicious looking recipes. I enjoyed reading about the history of the charming Vermont Country Store and meeting the Orton family. I would love to go there someday. I highly recommend this cookbook. I received this book via a giveaway. I enjoy cookbooks and love Vermont so, I entered the giveaway thinking, why not! What a pleasant surprise! This book is, as many have stated, worthy of being a coffee table book. Not only are the pictures stunning but the recipes are wonderful. The nostalgic descriptions and tasteful recommendations make this book more enjoyable with each page turn. If you find yourself dreaming of the Vermont countryside and scrumptious recipes that go beyond comfort foods, this is a book for you. Enjoy!
I received a free copy from Goodreads giveaways for review. My first impression of this book: It's big and beautiful!! Much more than I expected. I love the photos (old and new) and reading about the early days of the store. This is a great book, but a must for those who are familiar with The Vermont Country Store.
The Vermont Country Store cookbook is a very nice coffee table recipe book. It is heavy and nicely printed. The beginning of the book tells about the country store with photographs. I wasn't too interested in this section. However, the recipes were nice food porn. I love to read recipes so this book was right up my alley. This would be a nice gift.
I really enjoy this cookbook. It has a lot of great recipes and stories as well. It really does make you want to head to Vermont just to find an old country store. The pictures of the food really make you want to get to work on the recipes.
I won this book on First Reads recently and it is a real treasure, filled with beautiful photos, wonderful stories and incredible recipes that I am anxious to try. This book makes you long for a life in Vermont. A well written book with a lot of heart and love for this incredible place.
